I've used many Linux distros on the same family of G5 as yours many times and never had any problems. What VPU are you running?
I have to ask.. What in the world is a VPU? I've never seen that acronym before.

Several machine manufacturers (I believe including SGI) have in the past referred to the GPU as Visual Processing Unit. At the most basic level, I think that's a much cooler way of saying essentially the same thing, so I've started calling it that instead. :)

Sorry to hear you’re feeling this way. Have you tried other variants of Linux? Linux is a kernel, not an OS, so differing versions may have wildly different levels of compatibility. Debian May be a good choice here, it’s pretty easy to use (uses GNOME just like Ubuntu).

Ive had older machines before where Ubuntu would just not boot (not for lack of hardware) but Debian installed fine. I’ve never installed it on PPC before but it looks like Debian have different variants dependent on the Mac so take carehttps://www.debian.org/ports/powerpc/inst/install

Oh good grief. Are you for real? There's so much wrong in the world today and you choose to be offended by plushies...? 🥴

How do you survive in the modern world?
TenFourFox is slow because the VPU isn't doing any work, it's very bloated, and there are no universal optimizations bundled OOB. Pile all of that on top of the CPU alone, and it's a technological wonder it still performs as well as it does. This highlights the need for Linux / BSD development so that our machines can actually get such a thing as equal opportunity.

In the meantime, foxPEP (and the aforementioned TenFiveTube) will solve all of your problems. Give it a try.

I think I tried this and I followed the instructions which were hard to understand - but TenFourFox still loads skiwk

How do I survive in the modern world ? Prayer and hoping this COVID19 would go away and everything goes back to normal.

Gpu ? The 256MB Nvidia 6600 - every distro of Linux I tried always produces a black screen.

Ohh I want the spinning rainbow pizza of death plushie.

Now if I could get the iMac in a XXL large adult size made of stiff foam, I could use it as a comfy gaming chair thing. I would be the coolest dad EVER!

Our powerpc macs are obsolete, leopard is 13yrs old, tiger even older. No one cares about developing for powerpc now, its hard and slow. Even olders x86 intel (supported by linux comunity) are better for daily usage than our beloved ppc machines. Slowly we are getting out of posibilities, web is getting heavy, our machines olders and it's components are dying, even linux for powerpc is not good at all.

But being obsolete not means unusable. My daily usage pc is a powerbook G4 with 1GB ram 1.67ghz and i'm still rocking with it. Our software begins to be vintage, just take a look at mac os9 comunity, they're dead.

Basically our macs are capable to do really basics tasks, and it is enough for me. Web browsing, youtube and documents.

OK, how would you improve the instructions?

Could you elaborate on that last word?

What distros have you tried? I've tried every Ubuntu from 12.04, and every Debian from 7 - on the same machine fit with the same 6600 - and have never gotten a black screen. Have you followed the instructions in the Linux Wiki?

Could you add that to the Wiki, if you have any more information on that?

It really only happens on machines with dual dvi outputs. I don't know why or how Linux decides which to use for X, but this will solve a black screen 99% of the time.

Cheers
