I have both the 5 and 5s and they are almost the same to tell you the truth Yes it have a better camera, 2 tone flash, 64 bit and the touch id! For normal people like say my girlfriend would never ever see the difference except for touch id... If you can wait grab the 6 instead, but if you can't wait and really need a new iphone go for it! Im sure you'll love it!

I upgrade yearly because I'm on a family plan that has staggered upgrade cycles. While the camera/flash is nicer and TouchID is very convenient, the difference in processing power is not particularly apparent with the current iOS version and most apps. Circumstances being what they are though, I would still have upgraded despite knowing the differences for me are minimal. Would I have upgraded if AT&T had introduced the same discounts for BYOD and off-contract devices last year? Likely not.

However, at this point in time, it's probably best to just wait for the iPhone 6 if you're wanting to buy a phone with TouchID.

Anyone go from a 5 to 5S is it worth it?

I didn't upgrade to 5s from 5, but upgraded to 64gb from 16gb. This is more useful.

I actually went from a 5 to Note 3 to 5s.

I noticed: once you go TouchID, swiping to unlock or entering a passcode seem like a hassle. TouchID is very convenient, especially if you have kids or need to do one handed operations.

Camera is great. Never disappointed with quality and ease of use with iPhones camera.

With a iPhone 5s you have more options to switch carriers. You can use straightalk or tmobile or anyone with a 5s once you are off contract. Mostly because they have the 4g speed on more cellphone bands and that is what is allowed.

If you're planning to keep the phone for a couple of years then the 5s will eventually stretch it's legs and show just now much more powerful than the 5 it is.

Remember when the 4s came out and 4 owners said performance was near identical and it wasn't a big upgrade? At the time on iOS 4 and 5 that was true. Go and use a 4 and 4s side by side running iOS 7 and tell me there's "hardly any difference".

My exact story. 5 to note 3 to 5s.

Loving my 5s. It's perfect.

touchID is easily the best S series improvement. that being said, 5S is by far the best S series iteration. go get it, but if you could hold off, i would recommend to wait a lil bit since the new 6 is right around the corner.

Apart from the chronic lack of RAM if you're a 'power user'...

I'm a power user and never felt lack of ram in iphone. iOS manages the apps so well, that it never lags.

Infact a basic call app in note 3 lagged when I used to click on contacts. I figured out that both are separate apps. So I felt that 3GB was just a gimmick.

If you open too many apps, you can easily fee it.

I haven't upgrade to the 5s, still on 5. but I sometimes I use my wife 5s, and it is quite noticeable on the speed. 5s loads much faster.

I imagine going from a 5>5S would feel about the same magnitude of difference as those who went from a 4>4S.

I think it's the least improvement except you lost your phone, so others can't open it

Well with zero apps open I had lagging in phone / contacts in note 3. Same was the case with wifey's s3.

Never had to bother to close apps in iphone.

Now we both using iphone 5 & 5s happily.

Well with iOS 7, all phones have security that if phones are password locked, then there is no chance to open or restore it as new to use it.

So in my opinion Touch ID not only acts as a deterrent to people from opening others iphone. But it makes use so easy and seamless in unlocking a phone.

It's so much faster than having to enter a password.

Hello,

I recently purchased my iphone 5s because I ******* got robbed my moto x.

So, basically i NEED a phone cause i didn't have a backup but boy I love my iphone and I don't feel any remorse or whatsoever for not waiting for the 6. Tbh I rather be in the "S" cycle as it seems to have far less issues than the number series. iPhone 4 -antenna gate. iPhone 5, chipping/scuffed issues. Check the same issue on the "s" phones, almost none issues posted on forums. Nevertheless yes, i will miss my moto x 4.7 inch screen that will be included in the next iphone but still, I still find pretty useful the current 4 inch screen on my 5s. As many may have told you, buy only if you absolutely need a phone and not just for upgrading sake which then i'd wait.

Good luck!

The lack of RAM is apparent all the time when having a few resource-hungry apps open, or whilst using Safari. The i6 must have at least 2GB of RAM or I won't be getting it. 3GB would be preferable.

While it may not show, there might be performance difference later on, like the difference between the 4 and the 4s or the 3G and the 3GS. The S tends to be a internal upgrade and refinement.

As I said before I never felt the phone slowing down. I have 7 - 10 tabs open generally together.

Went from a 5 to 5S 32GB and its amazing. The touch ID is so convenient and its bloody fast! and i see the phone is much faster than the 5 (obviously it has to be).

Camera is better than the 5 (specially low light and the tru tone flash.)
plus i got the gold color which really looks good.
better battery life, with 5 i get about a day and now with the 5s i get 1 & 3/4 days maybe. its definitely better.

I could've waited for the 6 but im not a fan of big size phones so yeah!

It doesn't slow down, it just robs memory from apps and other safari webpages. Look at your diagnostics log for instances of low memory.

In real life terms, it is not appreciably faster. So unless your i5 was slowed by an old iOS install, you should see no speed gains. App loading and website browsing is really no different.

I won't mind it robbing from other apps.... Infact that's the beauty of iOS that it manages so well that it gives proper ram to whichever app that requires it. And at the same time user neever notices any slowness

Well I mind it. Webpages refreshing (extremely often) and apps crashing due to a lack of memory (fairly often) are not a good thing.
I used to swallow that BS about iOS needing less RAM than Android 'because it handles memory beautifully' ...but not anymore.

I've used both 4 and 4S and the difference is actually far more apparent. However, for me the 4S wasn't worth the shorter battery life. Another thing to consider, in the US most folks are already upgrading their phones after 2 years so this was pretty much a non-issue. That said, T-Mobile's push for Uncarrier and the response from AT&T and Verizon in terms of BYOD and off-contract devices are likely to change people's upgrade habits.

Not really. I'd say the performance difference is more like 4S>5. :p

While pages reloading can be an effect of that, apps crashing shouldn't be as that is exactly where taking memory and using it where it needs to be would come in and apply to.
