I've had both. Just because the iPad 1 was heavier, doesn't make it a better build. At least I haven't noticed any. Ipad 1 also still had light bleed and had a lot of wasted space inside according to the iFixit breakdown.
I suppose the price break looks tempting now for an old model, but as soon as apps begin flooding iTunes that take advantage of the new processor, graphics power, and memory, that savings won't look so hot as those new programs begin stuttering and are plagued with choppy playback on older devices. I saw some reviews on Real Racing 2 that's modified for the iPad 2 citing just that.
Developers are probably jumping for joy at the new hardware they can take advantage of, unfortunately, iPad 1 owners will more than likely not get an invitation to the party.
