The majority of the current Rolex line sells for much less than $30K.
That aside, I find money pretty useful. A Rolex Submariner that sold for $500 in 1969 is worth about $8K-$10K today. About 5X that if it was military issued. Try that with an Apple watch in 40 years.

If that is the case, why don't people buy hundreds of Rolex watches, save them until they are old, then sell them at a profit as retirement money? Sounds like a no brainer the way you put it.
It would be sweet if that poster's comment didn't include inflation, but I'm sure some watches from today will be sought after?
I miss my Timex Expedition. I'd had it for years and it died right before Christmas.
It cost me $19.99.![]()
No withdrawals yet....I haven't received either on the 2 AW I ordered!
Because 100 $10,000 watches is $1,000,000? It would be sweet if that poster's comment didn't include inflation, but I'm sure some watches from today will be sought after? Maybe not, since I would think people will only care about the original rolex's someday. I have a Rolex Milgauss gv that I purchased last year(my only mechanical) and I wanted to see if I could wear that for everyday until I passed it onto my son. Never thought I would sell it, never thought of it as a profit generator. Pretty flipping happy will my milanese loop 42SS and happy to be on the first run! I will wear this watch until gen 2, already can see passing it along to kids each time(not so much with Rolex's).
If watch helps push tech on wrists, however, I think Swiss(and Apple) should be thinking about how to preserve the timepieces and make the past 100 year watches skyrocket. And I don't know if preserve is the right word, but why wouldn't the watch push these to obsolete. I know many have watched the digital watch not win the battle(?) but I think the horse and buggy analogy might push my mind in the direction I was going. I love love love my Rolex, and will never let it part family, but I'm not wearing it on date night, or to work, or, or... bc the watch is great and honestly I'm proud and excited to own one(I don't carry a pager bc everyone has the same cell phone as me). As much as you want to resist, just like people are doing with electric cars(200 miles per charge is MORE than enough for anywhere I drove last year, and this will only get better), why?!? My girlfriend had watches and wore them when they matched a certain outfit, BUT SHE LOVES HER APPLE WATCH AND CANT WAIT TO GET HER PINK MODERN BUCKLE.
Man, one stupid comment about buying and retiring off of rolex's, and I'm lost in crazy rants about weird attraction to a brand that once gave us that 1984 commercial...
I do still really like and respect my horse and buggy but I hope wifi/bluetooth charging is soon to come. Then people will **** about battery life(I was at 49% when I checked before getting into bed, sounds good to me. keep the case size Apple and triple that battery life in a few years!). Should I go on about Edison and Tesla and wireless power and death rays>? I like this thread bc it's about my two favorite timepieces. Ive should be proud

as soon as my Apple Watch arrives I'm giving my GMT Master a much deserved break after 34 years and finally sending it in to Rolex for a complete service. I will still be wearing this classic some for sure. No charging, no winding, no water worries, no updates and will still be working 30 years from now.
After much reflection, I decided to keep it.
Great discussion!
The watch is in the box and will be returned tomorrow.
I feel like the "Twilight Zone" episode, "The Dummy". The watch was beginning to dominate my life.
Noooooooo! You've been seduced by the dark side.
For those who already have it, sure, you may take it out once a while. But for those who haven't already own a Rolex, would you buy one just so you can use it once or twice, or maybe a few times max a year? That's like buying a Lamborghini at full price and only using it twice a year. The rest of the year, you drive your Lexus or BMW. It's such a waste. Your money is better used elsewhere, towards something you will use frequently.
I'm very interested in this topic and everyones experiences.
My fiancé wants to get me a Rolex as a wedding gift soon but I now question the "timeless" quality that made buying a rolex make sense. I'm planning on getting an apple sport watch just for working out, running and excercising (like i would use a g-shock) but I'm afraid once I use it, I will get accustom to the features and wonder how I ever got by without it and in turn leaving mechanical watches in the rearview mirror. I wanted to get a 2015 submariner model to signify the year we get married so waiting is less of an option. I guess I could use the Apple watch for 4 or 5 months and then make a decision. Any advice?

This old thing?
Not once my Space Grey gets here. I had the milanese but the weight of the SS was just too strange for me, at least with that band. I don't think it was heavier that the Rolex but it felt like it, and in a bad way. The sport seemed much more comfortable during my try on, so I will give it a try. It arrives any minute now.
This thread is basically all the reasons why the mechanical watch is in deep ****.
