Although I do have to also say that I have never been impressed with the Civic's vehicle dynamics. I also personally don't much like the short throw clutches that are in most Hondas, although I can live with that....

My empty-nester parents picked up an '07 Civic LX with a manual last year. The steering is decent, but not great. The ride is softer than the Civics from the 90's I'm more familiar with, but not floaty. My biggest complaints would be that the clutch is a bit sensitive (this seems to be a Honda thing, as you said) and it's slow. Especially when you put four people into it. I'd rather have a Golf or a European model Focus.

I'd go with the VW Rabbit myself.

The 2009 model looks sooo bad ass.
I'm hoping to get one as a graduation present.
Anyways, I don't know much about the fit.

Oooooo that looks awesome.

I got an '07 Rabbit. Pretty awesome car, gas mileage is eh. I get about 25 combined city/hwy. 300 miles per tank.

I had a 2007 Civic for a rental a couple weeks ago and HATED that thing. It had absolutely no power at lower RPMs, I had to floor it to get the thing to move.
No question about that. (I'm guessing the Fit isn't much of a powerhouse either, although I've never driven one).

I'm currently driving a 2001 CR-V (which I believe is based on the Civic powertrain) and it has no pickup whatsoever. Am looking forward to trading it for an Accord sometime in the next year or so.

Everyone I know who has a Fit absolutely loves it and it is hands down better than the competition. They are very versatile and fun to drive unlike the Yaris and the Accent/Rio. There is a reason why it has come in first in almost every single magazine comparison it has been in.

I would never recommend a VW, ever. FOUR VW products have been lemoned where I work, that is right, lemoned. Two Touaregs, a Jetta, and an A4. I have a friend who has a 2004 Beetle and it has been it in the shop almost as much as she has driven it and the VW dealer experience is terrible. One of our Sr. VP's has an A8 and it has been flat bedded twice in the past month and he says that his old XJR was more reliable!!! I would not trust CR "Recommended" rating on the Rabbit. Who cares if it has a nice interior if you never get to spend any time in it. JM2C.

my husband and i have an '07 Fit Sport, and we couldn't be happier. great mileage, crap-tons of room inside, and a very comfortable ride. and it's a Honda, which means the car will fall apart before the engine gives out. :p it's very reliable and it's easy to work on, too.

seriously, though...i've never driven a Versa, but i do believe the Fit gets more MPGs (we get around 37 MPG combined), and i personally like the looks of the Fit over the Versa.

I test drove one when I was shopping for my new company vehicle. I was cross shopping several different sizes of vehicles so to compare it to other things that size it wasn't bad, if you don't need the rear seats look at the smart car...that was what I came very close to getting. The smart car felt more refined to me...the fit wasn't bad though, and it should be cheaper to fix than a smart car being that it's honda and not mercedes ;)

I ended up getting a F-150 FX2...heh a bit of a stretch from the compact car market but I wanted the ability to move more equipment than a small car would allow (I own my own company and that's what it's used for 99% of the time).

imo, the honda fit is really ugly. No offense to anyone, but i can't stand the thing

Boxer 4 >> inline 4 :p

Speaking strictly from experience, I can say that the KA24DE 2.4L DOHC inline 4 (150HP) in my '99 Nissan Altima had every bit as much low-end torque as the EJ251 2.5L SOHC flat 4 (165ish HP) in my '00 Subaru Forester.

The inline engines often rev more smoothly, but both of the engines above are big for a four cylinder, so they don't rev as high or as smoothly as the little Honda fours...but they pump out way more torque.

The current first-generation Fit sold in the USA is actually an amazing car on the inside. It's physically way smaller than my current 1998 Civic HX CVT coupe but is actually roomier, especially for back seat passengers. And you can easily fold the rear seats for an amazing amount of cargo space.

The second-generation model--probably arriving October 2008--keeps the interior space flexibility but offers even more space for passengers and cargo, along with a revised suspension for a smoother ride and a more powerful engine.

I get that with my '07 KIA Magentis V6 (small one), Optima in the States.

30 on the highway, if I hold to about 60mph.

Meh....I can get 30 or 31 holding it at about 75 on the highway with my GTI and 10 bucks (USD, your Canadian dollars are getting too expensive!) says my car is much more fun :D

I agree. But, as the saying goes, different strokes for different folks. Otherwise they would only need to make a single car that everyone would love .. lol

Cheers.

Yeah i know, but its just an opinion.

And to be fair, most of those small engine hatchback cars that seem so popular these days are ugly. Honda's fit, Chevy's Aveo, Scion's xD, Nissan's Versa etc...

Though the VW rabbit is nice, as well as the Kia spectra5.

Oh and all my judgement is based purely on looks :)

I think actually that Kia and Hyundai *have* been producing some real lookers in the past few years. I wish their vehicle dynamics and engines were up to par -- if one of their cars drove like, say, a Mazda3, I'd totally hit that.

A true assesment.

I have a KIA, and I admit that they are a generation behind on the technology front.

BUT, they do offer a 5-year warranty, and that says a lot.
