This happened about two weeks ago, I had just gotten home from the grocery store and I was trying to take out the bags from the trunk of my car when my dog ran out to greet me. that day I had on some jogging shorts (no pockets), so I was trying to hold my iPhone, Wallet and Keys in one and 4 grocery bags in the other.

So between me trying to multitask, my dog jumping up at me and then me stopping to wave hello to my next door neighbor, I lost focus (and grip) and the result was my phone falling straight down (about a 3 ft drop, mid waist) onto my concrete driveway.

At that moment I was 100% sure that the glass had broken, I was so afraid to pick up my phone, I was expecting to see shattered glass everywhere, but that small dent was the only damage.

It's a pain being OCD like that! Especially when things like dead pixels, etc. are fairly common on these sorts of products. Feels like every Apple purchase is a bit of a nerve wracking experience! I'm sure these sorts of problems are a lot more common than forums lead on, but "normal" people would just never notice or care. Wish I was a bit more like that. My behaviour definitely drives my girlfriend up the wall. :)

I'm the same exact way man! It's hard to buy something so beautiful and expensive and then see something wrong with it. You're absolutely right though. It shouldn't have chips and nicks in it already if it's brand new.

I too drive my girlfriend up the wall with my obsessiveness. It seems like I'm never happy with my purchases, but I eventually get over it as the weeks go by.

Ha - yeah, each day becomes a bit easier than the last. I can feel myself gradually accepting it. :)

The thing that helps me is this:

Nothing is ever going to be 100% perfect. If you swap that phone out with a different one, who knows what tiny imperfection that may have. You might have a yellower screen, loose buttons, camera problems... you just never know... and all for what? A tiny scratch? If you think about that, you'll surely be happier knowing that the only thing wrong with your phone is a small chip in the bezel.

Well said.

I've been reading all the comments here, and I've got to say I'm surprised that a lot of you are putting up with a damaged device despite paying $$$.

I bought a launch day +1 IP4 and a day later notice a large chip on the black part of the bezel, just underneath the band. I immediately went to the genius bar and demanded a replacement which the duly gave me...although after much scepticism.

Apple have supplied you with a damaged product - the product should be in perfect condition and it was not....demand a new one, make sure you both inspect it before you accept it.

If or when I decide to take in my iPhone 4 for service, I will ask the genius nicely (like a human being) and not demand anything.

I'm not sure why you think you're owed a replacement since it was you who damaged your phone.

I'm addressing those who, like me, have had a damaged product out of the box. You are entitled to a replacement, and don't let the genius bar person tell you you're not, and that you probably damaged it yourself (as they tried to do with me)...you should demand a replacement.

I wasn't talking about the dent, I was referring to just general service (screen issues, bad headphones, etc...). I am not owed anything, and if I thought I was I would have gone into the Apple Store the same day I made the dent, but I haven't.

Their is no reason to go into an Apple Store (or anywhere for that matter) and demand anything, asking nicely goes a long way. (thats what I was referring to)

I'm not sure why you have a problem with people demanding things they are entitled to - as you yourself have highlighted. In fact I'm not sure why you're even posting in this thread as your situation isn't even relevant to the OP's point. The thread is about manufacturing defects - not self-inflicted damage - and FYI if you 'made the dent' you aren't entitled to anything - it's attitudes like this that make the genius people sceptical in the first place, and make it harder for us who have a genuine gripe.

Calm down.

i exchanged mine once at the apple store because the original one had 2 scratches on the stainless steel band right out of the box. The second one has a little dent too like the OP on the bottom left of the phone. Seems like Apple doesn't do too good of a job with QC... :(
Paid so much $$ for such a beautiful phone but has cosmetic issues straight outta the box.. very disappointing.
At least everything functions fine with it ^^''

I'd take a permanent black marker and touch it up.

That was my first thought!

Mine came out of the box perfect, but I dropped it yesterday. Luckily it seemed to just land on the back or something because there was no dents, scratches, etc. Waiting for my case to arrive in a few weeks, but until then I'm trying to be careful.

about the chip/dent,here is my experience with 4 iphone 4. The first one i get got a small chip part on the back, near the camera, the 2nd unit i got have a small chip part on the steel band near to the sim card slot, the 3rd one i got is some light scratches behind of the volume button, the 4th one i get is at the bottom near the charger, also a small chip.Unfortunately,i still haven't see a perfect non-factory defect for all the purchases i made. They caught my attention coz they are very shining on the part that got chip.

lol i strongly believe it's a curse XD if i got to buy somehting like this maybe i'll just directly slide it in the bumper and dont check so much on it,the more i care the more i go crazy

I have a dent, real tiny one, about the size of a grain of salt right on the outer edge of the steel band, barely noticeable, and I'm quite sure that it has to be a manufacturing defect as the surrounding area is completely flawless and I take real good care of the device.

Aside from that I should like to point out that the manufacturing quality of the device itself is top of the line, certainly this level of quality is seldom seem on a consumer electronics device.

High praise to Apple's design team!
