I was just wondering because I am in my 14 day period. It just seems silly to go from a brand new laptop to a refurbished one that is cheaper to buy online when I am still within my 14 day period.

I really hope I get a new one because that is what I paid for =/. I could see if I needed a replacement 4 months down the road, but a week later? It seems like a bad trade/deal for me if they wanted to replace it with a refurbished one.

I think that that poster thought you were asking as to whether or not you'd get a new or refurb display, in which case his/her answer would have been correct.

If the Apple Store will allow you to exchange it(and i say that because in my experience there is a supposed "dead pixel policy" that some genius' will use)
, and keep in mind you may have to forfeit the new accessories that come with the replacement, should you get a new unit.

It really depends on where the pixel is and what type it is. Bright red, green or blue pixels are far more annoying than actually dead ones. My 30" display has a dead pixel right where the top bar is but you don't tend to look at it all that much so it doesn't bother me.

If the dead pixel were anywhere in the middle of the screen it'd drive me crazy.

my uMBP17 doesnt have any luckily, nor do any of the other uMB/P's had any...which was sort of a shock...
however my 30" ACD i got in Feb of 2008 has a nice little stuck pixel in the center of the screen but is only visible on Red backdrops...although sometimes i can see it on black backdrops...im wondering if its dying it out now.

Im alittle ticked but i figured whatever. and i can notice dead pixels like none other lol

My MBP is fine but on my ACD there are about five dead pixels on the bottom left of the screen. The rest of the ACD is perfect so I decided to live with the pixels rather than risk getting a replacement with dust/ backlight bleed/ dead pixels in the middle of the screen.
I really don't notice them anymore.
:)

Why would I have to forfeit these when I already paid for them? You have to buy them before you get the rebates, which I have not received because it has only been about a week.

If they ask for them back, I would find that to be completely unfair and insane! I really hope they don't go down that route. I just want a non defective laptop! I paid a lot of money for this, so I want the quality that I am paying for :)

I apologize, I meant that when they replace your computer, they may only hand you a new computer and keep the accessories that came with the replacement, seeing as how you should already have a power adapter and extension cord.

Oh!! I see! That makes sense :). I will bring everything just in case they need it though :). Didn't mean to sound hostile :)

If you just bought it from the Apple store and they actually agree to swap it, they'll give you a brand new box.

Usually theyre really hard to convince over one pixel...good luck anyway, they may do it. I certainly would return it for a perfect one :)

Hard to convince even when I am in my 14-day window? I just do not understand how they would not see this as a defect. Who are they say that by having stuck pixel that the screen will not develop more in the future because the screen is already defective?

I really hope this is easy when I go to them tomorrow. They were filled with appointments today so I had to make it for tomorrow. My Apple Store seems to always get booked fast!

Yeah, because technically a few dead pixels is "within" normal limits. As I said, I would return it too. If you're firm enough you'll get a replacement. If you want you can even open up the laptop in the store and check for dead pixels there just to make sure you don't walk out with another dud. Best of luck!

Thanks. I have been reading quite a few people who have even gone down the route of filing a complaint with FTC because the law does not see dead/stuck pixels as a normal occurance. Manufacturers try to tell you they are, but it has not been recognized by the law as such.

I would *really* *really* hate to go down this road as it seems like a lot of work. I really hope Apple recognizes that I paid some good money for hardware that I hope is perfect. If they try to argue with me, I guess I would just have to show them the hardware that I based my purchase on (the MBP on display) which is dead/stuck pixel free. That is the hardware that is advertised and that is what I expect to get when I pay over 1200 dollars for a laptop :)

Thanks for the good luck :)

I just wanted to ask, is it fair that I have to wait until an open genius appointment when my 14 days are limited? It seems like I could really get screwed by having to wait for a slot to open up as my "open window" begins to close. Does anyone know if asking for a replacement requires a genius appointment? Or can someone in their 14 day period just walk in to ask for one? I cannot imagine having to make an appointment to just ask for a refund for those that want to return it.

Hi,

You definitely need a genius bar appointment. If you really can't get one ASAP then just go to the store and tell them that. But if you're 15 days over instead of 14 I can totally see them telling you to buzz off. The 14 days is like the only thing you have at this point. Keep us posted!

They do, on the books. But in my experience I have never had them refuse me a return for any reason whatsoever as long as I get to it promptly following the arrival of the machine. The key is to call applecare directly and state in very simple terms that you are unhappy with the screen and would like a replacement. This bypasses the genius system in which you are subject to the whims of an on-the-desk, physical inspection.

This is the best way to get a new computer. My late '08 MBP came with a couple of dead pixels I phoned apple care complained and complained and eventually got through to someone in another dept, who arranged to replace it for me. The replacement, although brand new (not refurb) also came with dead pixels, but with a little perseverance I finally got one with without. Although to be honest towards the end you sort of stop caring. The hassle of having to continuously be without a computer is far more annoying that having one with a dead pixel.

Will do! My appointment is in a little over an hour! I really hope this is easy!

Thanks

I have one dead pixel on my Mac display. I have grown to ignore it. When I went to the Apple Store about it, they said they can replace it for free, but it would have to be shipped out. Also, the lead genius told me that every single display in the world has a dead/stuck pixel if you look closely. I went to 2 MacBook Pro's on display in the store and they both had a dead pixel.

My 30" ACD has three stuck pixels arranged vertically in the upper right quadrant about 5 inches from the top and 8.5 inches from the right side of the screen. When I first noticed them, I wasn't too upset because of the price I paid for the monitor (I got a great deal on eBay), but it did bother me a little.

Over time, I've come to completely ignore them. I only see them on light backgrounds anyway. In fact, I had to change my background to all white just so I could describe in this post where the stuck pixels were:D.

i have a thin line of dead pixels right in the middle of my screen. when i made a genius appointment, the guy offered to replace my screen. then it occurred to me, that this led display was an expensive piece of equipment. i felt guilty asking for a new screen for such a negligible issue that i rarely notice when watching tv on hulu. i also figured that if my computer ever broke and i needed to take it in for repair, the genius would be more willing to help me next time.

I am a very observant person, and I have one, but it doesn't bother me in the least. You can only see it on a pure black screen.

Hey everyone! I walked in for a 3:15 appointment. Got in at 3! Told them my problem and she said they would replace it for free! I have a new MBP sitting on the table right! It looks to be perfect with my initial look!

They also threw in Snow Leopard! I already ordered one in the mail, but it is better to have it today I guess! It is installing right now!

The experience was great! She did say she didn't know how many times they would replace one for me, so it was just a warning.

Thanks everyone! If you have any doubts about your purchase because of a defect or problem, just go to the Apple Store and see what they can do :). I am so use to customer service being difficult! Apple is so nice! Customer service is top notch!

Glad it worked out for you Branskins.

I have a 30" cinema display that has some dust particles behind the screen on its lower half. I still have AppleCare on the display for another month or so. It's only two small particles, so I'm not sure if it's worth it or if they'd even do anything for me. If I did get it replaced it would be my third 30" as the first one I received had hundreds of stuck pixels.

I've been living with these current dust particles for a few months now and they only annoy me when I have a white background. Still, though, Apple should better seal these screens. These particles weren't there when I first received this screen.

Thanks!

Didn't someone say that Apple has to replace the screens that have dust particles because it is a problem that the cannot really hide behind? For instance, they say stuck pixels are common during manufacturing, but dust particles are not. Also, dust particles do not fall under the number of dead/stuck pixel policy since it is a different problem.

Chances are you should be able to get it fixed because it is a problem and not a normal occurrence!

This is my understand at least. Either way, you shouldn't really have a problem dealing with Apple because they have been perfect with me every time I have gone.

Hey there,

Very good news -- glad the new one is great! In general people receive excellent service at the apple store, but not always. That's why I gave you my warnings before...

It really depends on what kind of genius you get. Sometimes they will inspect the machine like crazy and find any reason not to do the swap.

Dead/stuck pixels are COMMON, yes, that doesn't mean you should accept them, especially on such a pricey machine. It's the same thing with dust...a little bit under teh screen may be normal but then again why accept that?

Good luck!

I got the same girl that replaced my iPhone a few weeks ago (ear phones weren't being read anymore), so I felt a little calmer. I turned my computer on and told her that I am weird and hate stuck pixels. She said "No I understand!". And when I said I had one, as I was turning it to her she said "Oh I can see it from here!". After that she went in the back and got a new one. I had to wait the longest for the purpose who was going to fix the receipt (which only took 5 minutes). It was a great experience free of any problems.

I love their support and I hope everyone can find a helpful genius :)
