I think that is why I'm scared to carry my mini around.

I carry it in the original box which goes in a backpack when I go anywhere.

I'll check out those safety features because they sound cheap.

I was the same way for the first 1-2 weeks after I purchased mine. The box was everywhere the iPad mini was, even at home. I didn't want the slightest thing to happen and I blame myself for it later because I didn't have any type of protection. I am far from clumsy, but it always seems that one time that you have your Apple product out in the nude, is when it wants to get acquainted with the ground or some other unforgiving hard surface.

Tech Armor is a really good brand for protecting the display, I use it on my iPhone 6 Plus as well. They have protection starting at minimal coverage while maximizing clarity all the way up to ballistic glass giving you the shatterproof layer or even privacy screens. I knew I wanted an Apple Smart Cover but didn't want to pay retail, so I turned to eBay and found one for $10 instead of $40. The last bit was the clear rear shell that was compatible with the Apple Smart Cover.

my daily drivers attached, with add-ons.

Typing speed difference?

Please.
Honestly I can type faster on my phone. The mini keyboard is great when vertical, but is too narrow to use sideways. So if I were you I would get a air 2, and then a 6 plus. The mini has no point when you have a plus. They are just too close in size.

What I want actually is an iPad mini phone. When I bought my mini 2, I really wish that it is also a phone so I don't have to carry a phone as well. I think those ~5-6 plus inches phones are annoying. Meaning they are too big to truly be a phone, yet they are not big enough to be a tablet. The iPad mini is a comfortable screen size for a tablet on the go. So I rather have that as a phone, than a big phone. Android does have 7-8" tablets with phone functionalities, but they are Android (and those tablets are usually equipped with sub-par hardware vs the latest phones).
If you dont need too much phone functionality, a skype number works, and so does facetime if you have a cellular model , I think. Agree it is NOT a phone replacement but does the basics, though reception can be an issue. Am referring it to being used in UK, cant vouch for anywhere else but have found it quite usable when my phone was not available. CAVEAT, you have to pay for a skype number!

That combination makes nearly zero sense for me. Since I got my 6S+ I've been using my Air 2 less and less. I guess next step for me is to get iPad Pro. :D
