i actually wasn't too excited about the 3Gs when it was first announced, but ended up jumping on the bandwagon and ordered the 32gb. i thought about it a little bit and i can see tons of potentials with new apps that are yet to be released utilizing the faster processor, more memory, better graphics, compass, video, etc... give it a couple months and i think those new apps will make us want to upgrade.

I have the first gen, 16gb

You sell your unlocked iPhone for, what, 250+ if its in good condition with all the accessories.

I don't think I'll be able to get that much for it. Thanks to the $99 iphone. I am surprised you did. Did you sell before the announcement was made?

but its vastly superior to the 2G in terms of raw speed and processing power (judging by the specs).
I have played with a 3G iphone and didn't notice any processing power or speed differences. Except for the obvious faster network connection speeds of course. I don't do much surfing on my iphone. Just email, twitter, maps, amazon. when I do surf the web, it's usually to look up some quick information...during those times, and when I am not near a wifi spot, I would love a faster connection but it's not something that I really need.

I don't know, maybe I'll walk into an apple store one day, play with a 3Gs and if I see significant changes, I'll consider purchasing it. I'll also come back to this thread to admit I was wrong

Op I believe there are some misconceptions that are affecting your decision(s).

Any iPhone is still a hot item, especially so with the 1st gen in any flavor (even the 4gb!). The 99 dollar price you quoted is for a 3G, yes, but thats with the 2 year contract. Unlocked, these phones are and will sell for some major coin, ESPECIALLY since the 3.0 software will work on every model.

Also, the 3G offers HSDPA, which is what you are referring to on the internet speed front, but it also has a brand new processor and GPU that's substantially faster than the 2g and 3g hardware. Infact, the those two versions have the same internals as far as speed goes. The iPod touch 2nd gen is faster than both of them. The 3G marks the first evolution in the iphone line with regards to speed enhancements. If you haven't taken a look at the guided tour I suggest it as a first look.

Yeah, I guess he does have the 2G (as he's now clarified). I didn't notice the part you mentioned until now.

And OP, the announcement and price drops haven't really affected the eBay market much. Like I said, 16GB 3Gs are going for $400 still, and I guess Eddy's research shows the 2Gs reaching $250.

I am considering getting my first iPhone. I've an iPod touch 1st gen 32GB so I am looking forward to the iPhone 3Gs with the touch interface.

My last cell phone was purchased a while ago and has served me well over time but I figure that it is time to upgrade after 8 years. :)

Now if I had an iPhone 3G I wouldn't even consider upgrading to a 3Gs model. I don't see the need.

The 3GS is only an incremental upgrade from the 3G, so the people who upgrade from the 3G are going to be the real diehards who always have to have the latest and greatest. However, it is a significant upgrade from the 2G, so I think it makes a lot more sense to upgrade from 2G to 3G. Of course, for people like me (with no iPhone), it's an even more significant upgrade. :)

Your phone doesn't have a contract, so it's worth a lot more that a subsidized phone that requires a two year commitment. I sold my 16GB 2G for $300 a few days ago.

i was torn between upgrading or not. but now i'm excited about upgrading. just sell your 3g and offset the cost. you can do it again next year and sell the 3gs to offset the cost of the 4g model. if you keep your 3g, how much can you sell it next year? UPGRADE!!!! you know you want "the fastest, most powerful iphone!!!!!!!"

I watched the first few minutes of it. I am impressed with the fast loading times for opening and switching between applications! Have to check out the rest of that video.

that's the plan, waiting until I find a need to upgrade. Right now, I don't feel there's a need.

If the 3.0 software wasn't available for first gen iphone users, I wouldn't be having this discussion. the package as a whole (3Gs and 3.0) is a worthy upgrade. Hardware alone, not so much for me. (Edit: changed my mind about this after watching the video above)

If I could get $250 for my phone, that would be great.

.
wow 8 years. I can see why you'd want to upgrade. You won't be disappointed with the iphone.

QUESTION for those that sold their current iphone. Did you clear your iphone/sim card? You going without a phone for a few days?

Well i'm switching from t-mobile, so I called up t-mobile (out of contract), told them to take a hike (switch my number to prepaid). Then I took out my sim and did a full system wipe which reset my jailbreak for some reason. After that I reinserted a t-mobile sim that hadn't been activated to re jailbreak and after that removed it, cleaned it off and cleaned off all the accessories, then gave it to my buyer.

Now i'm using some POS 20 dollar prepaid phone which really is the bare essentials, although it does have a built in FM radio and LED flashlight!

How is it only an incremental upgrade? the 2G ->3G only added gps and 3g
the 3G-> 3G S gives you more ram, faster processor, upgraded camera, video, a compass. voice control, faster 3G, should i go on?

Overlooking your last comment ;) it's time for you to get an iPhone. Sushi, the time is NOW.

I sold my 3G about two weeks ago. I tried to do it ASAP before WWDC. I bought the 3G in October, switching from the 2G which I got on release day. Ever since January Ive been waiting for the third gen iPhone. After WWDC and not having ANY iPhone, for the first time in about 3 years, I am definately having 2nd thoughts. Dont get me wrong I loved my iPhones, and Im not saying I wont upgrade, but Im not that excited about the 3GS. There is STILL no 3G in my neck of the woods either. I also dont want to sign a new contract and be SOL when next year something better drops. I sold the
3G, so if I dont upgrade I will be iPhoneless. But suprisingly enough the BlackBerry Bold Im using is fine, and isnt a bad phone.

I have the OG iPhone and I pre-ordered a 32gb but I'm having second thoughts myself, 2 main reasons -

- monthly service $15 more a month

- design. looks freaking the same as the 3G. blah, so many people has the 3G.

On my first gen I do not have a case on it and it looks great.

However all that extra stuff makes me feel its a worthwhile upgrade and I'll skip the next update.

If my screen didn't developed a little white haze in the upper right corner then I would probably keep it. but then if the 3GS had a matte back like the rumors, I would have absolutely no fears or regrets.

Also hoping the TomTom software is priced right I could give my outdated Garmin nuvi 350 to my sis (/w the beanbag mount) and have one less gadget in my car.

But still, damn 15*24 + 299*1.0875 tax + 18 upgrade fee. over 2 years that's going to 800 bucks or so. I'm still going to keep my first gen iPhone for a collector's item and just in case.

I'm still having second thoughts, I think I'll wait for the next one unless proven otherwise

I was actually reading these forums for news about WWDC, and I saw a link that said iphone available to order.

Well I was on the APPLE store site, and ordered the phone without even knowing what the price was (thank gosh, I was eligible for the 499 upgrade...)

Well the iPhone 3G was my first iPhone. I held off buying an iPhone because of its lack of 3G support. Instead I was using a Samsung Blackjack 1 and 2. When the 3G was announced I was excited. 3G data and all the perks of the iPhone in general was enough to get me to buy one.

Now than it is a year later (almost), I was slightly disappointed with the new iPhone. I was hoping for a larger upgrade and different look. However after I thought about it, what can Apple really do to improve the 3G iPhone?

Faster Processor
Better Graphics
Faster Internet and Data
Better Signal
Better Camera
Maybe forward facing camera

There just isn't much more they could add to the phone. So after thinking about it I was able to sell my 3G for 405 dollars. I then bought the 32GB 3GS. So I am spending 140 ish to upgrade to a better iPhone. I think that is worth it!!!

I bought a 3G last week with plans to try it out and return it to get a 3GS but I've decided to keep the 3G. I probably won't even notice it's 2 times faster and my ipod touch and 3G already seem fast enough for me. I'd never use voice control, I can just drop a pin in maps to see if I'm going in the right direction, and I jailbroke my iphone so I can record video which I probably won't do anyway. 3G is fine for me!

Cycorder won't even compare to the 30fps on the 3G S, when you're driving you don't really have time to just drop a pin to see if you're going in the right direction, and when at&t comes out with 7.2mbps the 3G S will load web pages twice as fast also. All for $100? DEAL

I would re think that maybe. The main reason is because down the road you will have better resell to compensate for the extra costs of an early upgrade. You are getting a better subsidized deal with the 3GS compared to the 3G.

Not only that, but you would have more power and extra features. The jailbroken video taken with the 3G won't compare to the video taken with the 3GS.

Go for the 3GS

I'm not worried about the video quality because if I had something important to record I'd use an actual camcorder instead. Also, I live in San Francisco and have no use for driving so that's not a problem. I guess having a lesser resale value kind of sucks but I'm not too bummed about that. I think I made the right choice for myself.
