I don't tend to judge guys based on appearance. I think a sexy guy in a nice suit is just as sexy in a pair of jeans and a nicely fit t-shirt. It's all about confidence and if dressing nice makes you feel confident, great.

Do you mean you'd date guy you think are ugly, or do you mean you don't care how he dresses, as long as he has good-looking genetics? ;)

I find the former difficult to believe. I'm not a particularly superficial guy, but I do need to find a girl attractive to consider dating her. That doesn't mean she needs to wear a really short skirt (i.e. dress the part), or tight shirts. She can wear sweats as far as I'm concerned. I just need to find her pretty, or cute, or.....something. I wouldn't date a girl I found unattractive, but I don't think that's shallow to date a girl partly based on her appearance. I think it's natural to try and find someone you're attracted to.

EDIT TO ADD: I am dating someone like that already. She's nice and meets all the personality "criteria", but I'm dating her partly because I'm attracted to her.

Wow this thread is hilarious!

I'd say I dress well... well to me, at least... which I believe is what's most important. If you like how you look, and you're confident with who you are, it's just one less thing to worry about when you're out and about trying to achieve your goals, dreams, finding a significant other, etc.

I do own several ridiculously overpriced brands, but almost all of them were gifts from an Ex whom was possibly the most materialistic and brand-driven person ever. I personally don't care for people like that, but I certainly don't judge them. If it makes them happy, then that's all that matters. People can certainly take it too far though, that's for sure! But hopefully people like that will find happiness in more important things (in my opinion) - family, friends, activities, learning, etc.

I do, however, find various brands fit much nicer than others (either cheaper or more expensive). I was a fan of Abercrombie/Hollister/etc, but I think I'm getting too old for those brands now hahaha. I get a lot of my shirts from Express now, which sounds a little metro, but I feel their quality and the way the shirts fit are worth it. It can be fairly expensive (though I exclusively shop sales lol), but nothing compared to the average Ralph Lauren/Lacoste polo/button-up.

I think people who buy LV are out of their mind though... even Burberry or Lucky Brand... I mean, really? You're really going to spend $1500 on purse or $400 on a wallet and to carry what? $6.37 in change? Go use your money for something worthwhile - an experience, a friend, family, donate it, invest it. There's a million and a half things you can do with your money, yet you choose to drop $1700 on a Burberry coat? Really!?! You can buy a coat for $17!

I just wish I was on the other side of the hustle, ya' know? Producing shirts for $3/piece, then selling them for $85.. that's one heck of a business!

But anyway, just remember - honesty and confidence will get you a long way.

Just a pet peeve of mine, though it seems popular. His hat is way too big, and tucking your ears inside it drives me nuts.

I wonder if he has a LIDS reward card.

I meant that I don't care how a guy dresses. :) Well...to an extent. If a really attractive guy were to come up to me in a Justin Beiber shirt, that wouldn't fly.

I have friends who are very superficial: we'll be out somewhere and they'll see a guy but then comment something like "he has really ratty shoes" or "that's an X brand" dumb stuff like that. I've even been in the car with friends when they've seen a nice looking guy driving an, to them, un-nice car and talking about it. They're my friends but sometimes I just want to shake them!

And yes, I agree that you have to be at least attracted to someone. I've politely turned down clients dressed straight out of GQ and guys dressed for the weekend if I wasn't at least slightly attracted to them (and unprofessional in the other case). I don't consider that "snobby" or shallow...everyone has their preferences and it's human nature.

Umm..."clients"? Are you sure you want to admit that here? ;)

Jeans and t-shirts, as cheap as possible. It ain't about the wrapper, it's about what you get when you tear it off. :)

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!

You need to tease them a little first, get their imagination going. >: I But I look a little obscene in a Josckstrap, which can make workouts a little prolonged.
...

I'm stopping there. ;)

I don't wear such things. Usually just a plain t-shirt and jeans. Although, if I'm being honest- these are two printed tees that I own. And with these I'm simply promoting myself. :D

The second gets me quite a bit of attention. ;)

I cringed at the second one.

Also, what is this subtlety of which you speak?

...and they get worse from there. I let one of my American friends stay at my flat for a month. He repaid me in shirts. :/

People like you make me laugh. You care way too much about your appearance, trying to impress people that don't even care or matter.

But no, I don't usually dress nice. I wear $3 clearance shirts and $15 Levi's.
Let me tell you a story:
I go to work every day, drive to the Lexus dealership to drop off my inventory, and while I am there the salesmen laugh and give me looks like "Ha, he dresses badly, he must be poor." They're dressed in nice suits and have a very professional look to them while I do not. It's great though, because I'm the one laughing all the way to the bank making 5x more than them.

Moral: I don't try to impress anyone with how I dress, because it does not reflect me or how much I make, whereas people like you think it does.

Yo don't have to spend a lot of money to look nice, btw.

but to me, it seems you have the same smug sense of superiority that you think the Lexus guys do, or at least you're insecure about it to the point where you think they're snickering at you

When did I say you did?

If that's what you think, OK. I'm not insecure, it's just an observation.

When did I say you did?

You implied it by referencing the cost of your shirt and jeans, compared to their suits.

And from your post it seems to me that you think that dressing well = dressing expensively.

If that is incorrect, than I'm sorry for interpreting your post that way.

It's just what I got from your post. Why the hell would they care what you're wearing? It's definitely kinda weird to think they would care enough to openly like, laugh at you or something ya know?

I wholeheartedly approve of all shirts in this post. :)

A.) They're superficial. In their mind you must look the part to be the part (in this case, dressing nice=wealthy).

B.) It's not a literal laugh, I guess I exaggerated that. It's more of a... smirk, I guess you could say. What really drives them wild is when I go and talk to the owner like we are best friends.

But, that's just my observation. You can think of it however you like.

My personal dress has changed in the last year - and I think it mostly has to do with reaching my 30s and just wanting to be different. I've disposed of all my college looking type clothes and a bunch of Old Navy stuff I used to wear (IMO their stuff is crap - I know you get what you pay for - but seriously their stuff never fits right and doesn't last long).

I've lost over 40 pounds in the last year and now instead of wearing slacks and a button-up shirt to work I now wear tailored suits, slacks and sports coats. I have about 9 suits now and the best part is that you can mix and match the coats and slacks to make even more outfits. I also usually wear bow ties when I wear a jacket but will sometimes wear a tie.

When going out at night I will usually wear either a cotton or tropical blend slack, colored chinos (red, blue, etc.), or nice jeans with either a custom fit polo or a buttoned up shirt and sport coat. I also have a nice selection of pocket squares and always wear one when I wear a jacket - whether when I'm wearing jeans or slacks.

My wife gives me grief because she was always the one that was dressed up but now she feels that she is always underdressed compared to me. I don't do it to show her up but I do like to dress nice. I get a lot of compliments at work from customers on my dress and a lot of my peers give me compliments as well - when before I would never get compliments.

While I did spend quite a bit of money replacing my wardrobe I don't pay a lot of money for my clothes. I buy my polos, shorts, and chinos (if I can find them) at Marshalls and usually get my dress clothes at Jos. A Bank (I know among the fashion elite JAB has a bad rep but I only buy when they are super discounted and have been satisfied with the quality I get for what I paid). Besides, I work in a pretty harsh environment (restaurant) so it wouldn't make sense to buy expensive custom bespoke suits just to have them treated so harshly.

Styleforum and AskAndyAboutClothes are great places for information on how to dress well.

First few paragraphs are similar to your moral.

And ericrwalker, you don't have to be a millionaire. I have a few clients that are average earners that are simply trying to plan ahead and make plans.

But if you do hit the lotto, yes...shoot me a PM. ;)

The last time I wore nice name brands was when my mother dressed me ~10 years old. Someone would have to force a gun in my mouth to pay 200 for a pair of jeans.

I think I'm presentable but don't dress expensively. My home wear is usually a printed tshirt and shorts (Uniqlo know how to cater for geeks:p). My casual outwear is a nice polo or tshirt (no big slogans, prints or expensive labels) with a Levis and a pair of Vans.
