im in westchester NY, and i would like to know as well .. Im on ATT now with the iphone and do get drops calls now and than. I would switch to Verizon but i want to know if the data speeds are much slower on verizon or is it tolarable ? Would you consider it a night and day difference ?

Wasn't data great in NYC up until late last year?

been living here all my life, and i've had an iPhone since they were first available (was on Verizon before that). NYC data always sucked with AT&T.

On another note, here are my Lower East Side test results from last night with my Verizon iPhone, not bad if you ask me...well compared to not being able to get data at all

Wow this is extremely disappointing! After 8pm anywhere in the city on AT&T I'm close to (if not higher than) 2 mbps. Can you post some speed test results around lunch time? I'm very curious about that as well. Thanks again.

is the difference between 1.5 and 2.5 / 3 that noticeable ?

In most apps, no. But if you tether or use your phone to download larger files then yes.

EDIT: or to watch streaming videos (Netflix, Youtube etc.)

I live in harlem and work down in Soho.

Needless to say soho during business hours is awful, but I have full wifi coverage at work for data.

but harlem I usually get 5 to 6mbps down and 3mbps up, just because the population density is lower, oh and I havent dropped a call in a year or so.

Called the AT&T store in SoHo and asked if there are issues with 3G internet, the rep said no. He was even accessing the Internet while I was on the phone with him and he said no problem.

I have a cousin ego lives in the Village who has AT&T I'm going to call and ask her how 3G is.

Just ran this speed test from my Soho office. Result speaks for itself. Tried running a few more afterward but it couldn't even find the closest server. Middle of the day is literally a joke.

Ok so after 8pm you experience better speeds than Verizon as you said in another post.

I'm interested in seeing what Verizon gets mid-day.

I'm near Queens and just did a speed test with my coworker who has an AT&T iPhone. We both loaded the same pages at the same time and he was shocked to see mine come up right away while his still loaded. After speed testing, my speed was about .75 Mbps, which I thought wasn't good until we saw his speed test results: .08 Mbps.

LOL :D

I'm not as concerned with download speed or bars as I am with reliability. I often have 5 bars but can't get a connection. I stream a lot of internet radio and it drives me nuts that the signal on the AT&T iphone keeps dropping in and out, despite a "strong signal". What I would like to know is how reliable and accessible is the data on the Verizon phone.
Thanks.

Yes, after 8pm when there is little congestion, the network flies. Middle of the day is completely useless.

Ok at the college I'm usually on wifi. Today I'm doing a field test with an att iphone and verizon droid x both on 3g.

What I'm discovering is this.

Morning att flies. Miday such as now att is extremely inconsistent and verizon is slower than it was this morning but not much slower. In same area I tested this morning that I was able to get 3G with Att faster than Verizon I can't even get 3G data, like being on edge.

What area of the city is your college based?

That's what I don't get; he had 5 bars on his AT&T iPhone. FIVE, and yet download is only .08 Mbps?

My experience with Verizon's bars has been pretty consistent on my old phone though. If there's one bar the data is pretty much going to be sucky bad.

The only anomaly with the bar graph was when the signal would go from 5 bars to zip, then from zip to 5 bars merely seconds later. When it did that my data connection was always sporadic.

I got my iphone 4 today! Activation was easy. So far I'm getting constant five bars and 3G in Midtown and Sunnyside Queens :D

I guess the real test will be Thursday and next week when everyone else gets their iphone. Hopefully those 16 new towers will help.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't 3G data in NYC good up until late late last year?

Definitely, I lived around Union Square and went to NYU through 2008 and my iPhone (at that point on EDGE) got great data speeds, but I was in Brooklyn a few weeks ago and the speeds (especially at night) were like people here are posting, around 100-200 kbps d/l.
