Hi, just wonder if anyone here knows two or three languages? How did you go about learning them? I'm learning Spanish (Spain Spanish) and I'm sorta getting there, though it is difficult. What's the best way to learn a language without being in the country? Shall I try and build up my words/phrases day by day/a bit at a time? XD :)
Thanks.

I speak Spanish from Venezuela witch is very neutral, but I saw Gwyneth Paltrow speaking Spanish with accent from Spain and was the most horrible turn off ever, because had had her gringo accent together with the Spanish one and it was horrible!

Is better if you learn Spanish with mexican or colombian accent, even argentinian, they are all more elegant.

As long as you won't go to Catalunya, it'll be fine. There you're actually better off speaking English than Spanish.

This is totally nonsense. Almost everybody speaks Spanish in Cataluña, with the possible exception of some rural places. Not everybody speaks or understands English. I've been many times to Barcelona and Spanish is my mother tongue. No problems whatsoever. Sometimes I was with colleagues that spoke only English and, even in a professional environment, you could easily see the limitations in some of the natives.

Seems like the language is devolving back into Olde English; from before they invented spelling. A lot of the text messages I've read reads like Chaucer without the eloquence.

Interesting observation, it's a known fact that the colonies that have been cutoff from the "innovation" of the motherland tend to keep more archaic forms alive.

Spain's spanish is very hard to understand by ear, even for native spanish speakers from latin america, as the accent is very strong, normally spoken very fast and with a lot of idioms.

Not true. I'm from Argentina and I find Spanish from Spain very easy to understand. On the other hand, Spanish from Puerto Rico is harder for me. But since Spanish has less phonetic variations for each letter that English, it's still easier to understand in all its regional variants.

Well, I disagree :)

Here in Spain we think that the neutral accent is the one from Castille

More people in the world speak Spanish than English apparently.

Any tips? :D

I learnt basic Spanish words watching "Dora the Explorer" with my little sister :D
You can watch movies with Spanish subtitles. Answering your thread question, I speak English (obviously), Arabic, and French.

re: Anyone know more than one language ?

I speak 3 languages and attempted to learn a few more with varying success.

It's an iterative process, not a straight line and can be overwhelming and expensive   . It helps to listen to native speakers a lot. Sounds differ a lot even between languages that are close/related to each other.

Also start small and constuct simple sentences and phrases and repeatedly speak them over and over .
Children learn to speak before reading and writing

I liked the "Got Europe ?" app on :apple: iPhone/iPad here, from Rolling Train .

It lets you quickly tap, listen and learn words and phrases in seven languages. Includes French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish.

Anyone know an app or two for the iPad/iPhone in which you can type in Spanish and it'll speak Spanish?

Mucho gracias amigos!

Aside from English I can speak/read/write Russian quite well. I know a few words in German too but can't speak.

English and phone English

Those count right?

Damn you have to pay.

Do you know of a free app?

Muchas gracias.

None like this one. It is worth every penny.

Tú obtienes lo que pagas, sí es gratis es mediocre o incompleta, prueba Google Language Tools

Bueno y si tienes iOS 6, activa las funciones de audio para que te lea los textos. Siri la puedes cambiar a español, es medio quisquillosa para entender pero i pronuncia muy bien. Revisa las opciones de acceso fácil (accessibility). Los idiomas disponibles para hablar serán los que tengas activos en el teclado.

No sabía que esta la lanzaron hoy:
Google App for iOS
Es gratis también!
