Out of curiousity, how long does the 4G battery last? I can get 14 hours of of my 30GB 5G, a bit longer sometimes (I am delighted with this battery life).

I've never had an older iPod, but I definitely prefer my 5G to my brother's mini at least. Though I'll admit, the 4G models look pretty appealing to me, from what I've seen.

I'm not sure how long it lasts yet, as I've only had it for almost 2 days now, but I've listened to it quite a bit and the battery hasn't moved since I charged it to 3/4 of the way up when I got it. It definitely has better battery life than the 5th Gen.

[/QUOTE]Now that Apple has proven they can make these things impossibly small, perhaps they need to reverse the trend and make the 6G a little bigger in the name of a larger viewing screen.

Like an eight pounder with a ten-inch screen??:D

Apples specs for battery life have been -

1G/2G 10 hours
3G/1G mini 8 hours
4G/Shuffle 12 hours
5G 30GB/nano 14 hours
4G photo/color screen 15 hours
2G mini 18 hours
5G 60 GB 20 hours

Prefer my 3G to newer iPods:
*came with all mod cons, including dock, case and power adapter
*comes with FireWire

:

the 4G iPhoto (40GB) also came bundled w/ the same set you just mentioned, including FireWire, USB2.0 cables and the AV cables for TV out. Surprisingly, the 60GB version iPhoto didnt come out w/ same accessories. When i got my 5G 60GB video iPod, all these accessories came in handy. (even the universal dock was useful as the video iPod came w/ a dock adaptor.) the only thing that sucked w/ the upgrade was that I couldnt use the iPhoto iTrip and I had to buy another one for the video iPod.

Got a 4G but loved my 3G

I find it interesting that so many people here like the 3G. I bought a iPod Photo 30GB because I wanted the import and view feature for a trip to Asia this past summer, but I've always missed the button layout on my 3G. It just seemed... nicer. But everyone was so excited about 4th gen and then video. I always thought the 4G wheel looked crappy compared to my 3G and that the 5G looked, and felt even worse... but I assumed I was the only one.
Everyone called the 3G the 'black sheep' but I guess I'm not the only one who liked it.

I have a 5 GB 1G, a 40 GB 3G and a 60 GB 5G. I love the tactile feel of the moving wheel on the 5G and wish that they would bring that back. The buttons on the top of the 3G I was never a huge fan of other than the lighting up factor. The buttons were are too sensitive and not intuitive when the iPod is in a coat pocket. I do miss the center placement of the headphone jack on all models prior to the 5G. As far as the 5G goes I have no complaints - I love this iteration of the iPod. Best one yet IMHO.

Nope, not at all - as I said above, I'll be holding onto my 3G for some time yet. I will pick up a video iPod one of these days, but I don't know if that will be a day in 2006 or perhaps even just 2007, at the same time I buy my next Mac. ;)

The only part I prefer is the clickwheel. The 4G clickwheel is definitely better than the 5G.

Otherwise, its no contest. The 5G is just so damn sleek and pretty. As for the 2G, look at this, lol:

The interface and the screen of the 5G is just too awesome to prefer the older generations, even with their remote connector. I find it much easier to read (especially in the car). Sure you need the backlight on all the time, but even with the backlight the battery life kills my 3G's.

The ability to play videos is pretty nice, too.

The way I see it, the 3G is the "Think different" iPod.

It came out just before the iPod craze and was still built to full Apple standards (well, except maybe the crappy battery...).

Yeah, that's what I like about mine as well - I had an iPod before they were so popular and before the masses started buying them. That is a "think different" thing, most definitely.

I like the way the 4G feels in my hand as opposed to the 5G, but i wouldn't mind getting a 5G either. My next ipod I guess will be the 6G

It's a tough call.
I loved my 2G 20Gb b/c I was able to beat the hell out of it and it still worked great.
I loved the 40GB iPod Photo b/c I was able to find an easy stick on case and carry it around with no case without ever scratching it (powerdesignusa.com - no longer in business).
I love my 60GB iPod video because it looks great and does a lot more. I love watching music videos on it (probably got around 150 on there now). But I am more cautious with it d/t the screen being more important now....and it does have a slower response than the others...and I hate transferring over USB 2.0 (50+ GB's is extremely slow compared to firewire).

All in all I've had and liked each version of the iPod with the exception of the 3G....hated it....I was happy the day they released the 4G's so I could get rid of the 3G and update.

WOW!

I never realized the 2nd Gen. was so huge compared to the 5th Gen. I don't believe I've ever seen a 1st-3rd Gen. in person, though.

I like my iPod photo better than the current 5G ... feels better in my hand, still has great battery life (~14-16 hours), and has Firewire. My laptop has USB 1.1, and when I was transferring photos from the computer to my memory card, it was too slow, I can't imagine syncing using it. Plus accessories like the iTalk were immensely handy, and makes sense being on top of the iPod. It's a shame they removed the remote controller =/

When I get a new MacBook Pro to replace my baby, I'll probably get a 5/6G iPod then. Hopefully with 100 GB of storage. =)

I was wondering this the other day. I got a 3G iPod just on the cusp of its popularity and wondered if I was just being very self-absorbed thinking "I'm sure this became über popular after I got mine". :D

Come on, they're not that old... :p

Hmm, if this is going to be the case though, then even when I replace my 3G I won't get rid of it, and just hold onto it - maybe it'll be worth something as a "pre-iPod craze" collector's item in the future, before everyone had one. ;)

I ordered a new 60GB iPod (black!) and I'm hanging on to my old baby!

I can still remember how excited I was when I first got it.

The all white of the 3G is just so sleek. That's why I got the black. Not a fan of the grey click wheel.

What can I say, you and me are just trendsetters. :D ;)
