Come on, they're not that old... :p

:D Yeah, they're not that old, but I live in a very small town. I'm one of the few Mac users around here and I can remember when the iPod first came out for Mac. (I was still on a PC, though) I thought it was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen, but I never did get to see one in person.

What can I say, you and me are just trendsetters. :D ;)

Me too!

When I got my iPod I was the only one at school with one.

The next year 2 more people got one (my then GF and another friend)

I graduated that year.

By now I'm sure like 25% of the kids have some sort of iPod.

My first ipod was a 10GB 2nd Gen, and that thing was great until the day the battery went kaput. I replaced it with a 15GB 3rd gen which i still thing is the best ipod to date ( not to mention how much more of a zen-like experience it was to open the box, plus you got EVERYTHING in the box ) Once i clearly ran out of room on my 15Gb i decided to sell my beloved gem and buy a 4th gen 40GB clickwheel. I used that ipod dutifully every single day, and i still have it and use it regularly, it has never once caused a problem, and i love it. but. alas. i too ran out of room on the 40GB. something i never thought would happen.

so i felt justified in hunting down a used 5th gen 60GB video. I would have gotten a 60Gb photo, but that thing was so humongous i just didnt even want to try to find one. and i figured for the money it would cost me to do some upgrades to my 4th gen, i could just buy a 5th gen.

So i happened to find one here on these forums, and i really do like everything about this 5th gen, i like how slim it is, i like the big screen, i am currently having a battery issue that i am trying to sort out, but aside from that i really like it a lot. i like the fact that it plays videos, not entirely necessary in my book, but being able to watch video podcasts is kinda fun :).

I also have a Nano, which i love dearly, it was one of the very first ones sold over here, and despite how easily it got scratched, i never had a faulty screen problem or anything like that. I love the nano for how lightweight and small it is. so many times i just want to take SOME music with me, and i dont want to / cant carry a full sized ipod with me, i think it was a worthwhile purchase :)

I'm really surprised how many people prefer the older, bigger, b/w screen iPods to the newer 5G iPod's. That's interesting. I've only owned the 5G video, but looking at the previous generations, other then for the nostalgic factor of owning one of the originals, the newer iPods just seem so much nicer to me in most ways. Maybe it's just what you got used to first?

I had a 3rd gen and a mini... I would take a 5th gen over both. The 5th gen fits my hand perfectly... maybe my hand are just big? I don't think they are.

As for the xtra features... it doesn't hurt to have them? I got a car with a GPS but I don't need it... but if I get lost it's nice to have. Right? maybe not? :)

I still think the 1st gen had the best asthetics.

The scroll wheel with the buttons positioned around it made it look like a white speaker.
I wish they'd kept that design element, added the click wheel concept and colour screen.

From a tech repair standpoint i prefer the 3-4 G ipods because you can use Firewire.
Putting a Bootable version of OS X on an ipod with all the diagnostic software is perfect cause i dont have to carry around all the CD/DVDs.
Any time there is a problem with someones computer you just boot from the ipod and fix the problem!

Nope. Although I would like a brand new, in the box 1G iPod :D

I've often thought the same thing - are older iPods eventually going to become colector's items?

Completely agree, this is one of the things I love about my 3G as well. Although I don't need to use it from a repair standpoint myself, having that ability and flexibility that FireWire gives you is deifnitely an added bonus.

I actually like my old green 2G iPod mini. It fit in my hand a lot better than the 5G and it was much faster. On the mini, when I went to play a playlist, the first song would show up the second I hit play, but I have to wait a few seconds on my 5G. The 5G has its advantages too, like bigger screen, color, photo, and video, but I miss my mini for its feel and responsiveness. :(

3g

the 3g ipod is where it's at, I must concur. I own the 3g 40gig model.

the four buttons with backlit feature looks so nice. love the nav. But one of the best reasons to love this generation of the ipod is......

silent podding!

no clicking, it's all touch. you can pod it up with zero noize, zero clicks. I love that.

what I want to do is get an 80gig hard drive into my 3g.

I upgraded my battery about a year ago, and I highly suggest it. the original battery lasted 4-5 hours. my new one lasts 14hours(!)

now if I could just get an 80gig harddrive in my 3g.......

How I wish the 5g ipods came with all the goodies the 1,2,3 and 4G iPod did. FireWire. the wall plug charger.:(

At least you can buy a wall charger for the 5G if you want. But nothing you can do about the Firewire.

My sister has a black 30GB 5G iPod, but I still prefer my 4G 20GB Color screen iPod. The clickwheel is nicer, the contrast is better, the plastic is less scratch prone, the battery life is longer (I get ~16/17 hours), plus it just feels better in my hand. If I were to ever get a 5G it'd be the 60GB model, just because the last 2 differences are corrected in the 60GB model (nice thickness and better battery life).
