I'm sorry you had a bad experience when you visited there stores.

I worked there for 6 years and loved every minute! We had great staff and we all were well paid. Pioneer, Sony XBR, etc... All top end models at our location.

Circuit City got bad only towards the last 2 years of it's life. They let go everyone making over $19/hour, so all the knowledgable sales staff was gone. They started hiring 16-18 year olds to sell $10-20k worth of products... Bad mistake.

I'll admit to agreeing with this. Back in the early to mid-90s, Circuit City here in Louisville was a major player, with a surprisingly high percentage of knowledgeable staff. CompUSA, by contrast, only had a few sensible employees, and they worked either in the repair section or in the Apple/Mac section.

The last major purchase I made at CC was in late 2003, for a Toshiba laptop. I noticed at that point that I knew as much or more about my purchase than the sales staff, but attributed it to "new guy" syndrome. I didn't realize at the time how right my observation would soon become.

CompUSA did have a nicer going-out-of-business sale, though; I got AppleCare for 50% off and a dock for my 2nd-gen nano for a buck. The CC closing sales sucked, quite frankly.

I think circuit city's biggest problem was their limited selection of merchandise I had only visited the store twice and I was not impressed by the lack of variety in their inventory, I browsed for about 20 minutes both times and walked out. The store was laid out kind of like a showroom for ritzy European sports cars rather than a place designed for the average electronics consumer looking for variety in brands and better deals. I can see how they managed to go out of business--I cannot see how they managed to stay in business as long as they did though.
