I won't be upgrading because I think the cost of these phones is too expensive and shouldn't be treated as a disposable device. I believe people should be keeping them for a minimum of 4 years.

I had a XS Max 256gb which was costing me £88 a month with 30 gigs of data. This broke 2 months ago and it was cheaper to buy a 256GB SE2 than fix the XS Max. I've since moved my phone contract to sim only where I now pay £20 a month for 100 gigs of data and unlimited minutes.

I've also not noticed that I can't really tell a difference between the XS Max and SE2 models. Yes the screen quality is better but its not standard def to HD difference.
a small quibble. the Phone will Not be disposed of unless it’s damaged beyond repair. it‘ll be refurbished and resold or whoever you sell it to will use it

I am on IUP and will upgrade. Makes sense to me given I always want the latest. There is a case to be made to wait until 2021 for the smaller or no notch phone.

I wont be. I tend to go over 2 years unless there's something huge. My devices are working great, no need for something else.

Yes but my point is its quite wasteful from a cash point of view to be blowing over a grand on a new phone every couple years for what are fairly minor changes. I've been doing this and im just trying to be more sensible now.. ha hopefully I'll follow my own advice

Apple is going to have to bring something REALLY special for me to upgrade from an XS Max.

I have upgraded every year since the 4. The last time I skipped an upgrade was the 3G to 3GS. Otherwise I have been a consistent purchaser of new devices. Until last year.

A case redesign and slightly larger screen are cool and all but unless the 12 Pro Max does something that causes a paradigm shift in my usage that justified $1300 I’m sitting out again.

I’m more likely to try something new on the Android side like a Galaxy Z Fold 2 or sidegrade to a iPhone SE Plus (2020) if it exists. $500 would be worth it to get a standard aspect ratio device with Touch ID.

This year has been tricky. I already sold my 11 and currently using my SE1. I can always go back and buy an 11 or move forward to 12 but so far everything leaked was disappointing.

This was absolutely going to be an upgrade year for me. I’m on an XR with 89% battery. Camera is getting long in the tooth. Also feeling like 6.1 is too small for me and I wanted to jump into the max line.

Then we started hearing about this 120hz nonsense. For Apple not to include pro motion on at least their top max phone is completely unacceptable in 2020. Don’t tell me the majority of people wouldn’t tell the difference or care..guess what? I CARE! I don’t think I can justify that kind of coin on a 60hz screen when that’s industry standard even on mid-tier androids.

If tomorrow is a joke like I think it’s going to be, I might have to consider switching gears on either a N20U or fold 2 after 12 years of iPhones.

Scrolling through this thread made me believe that this year most people won't upgrade. But just now read this article from cnet and find out : " A "staggering" 53% of respondents plan to buy this year's iPhone, according to a survey by electronics reseller Decluttr." Cnet

For most people, new chassis style = new phone. Probably just a lot of folks with iPhone X or older upgrading. :p

What will you do with 100gb data on a SE though, it's too small for video streaming of any length?

I guess 120hz is the end all be all for some to upgrade. For me it’s in the category of “nice to have but not a dealbreaker“. Apple, at least this year, wasn’t going to sacrifice battery life for both 5G AND 120hz on board.

Then you went into justification of “coin” so the iPhone 12 pro max 128gb is 1099$(according to leaks) so you’ll justify spending a 1000$ more to get that 120hz holy grail? With a sketchy android OS? In your case though you haven’t experienced android. In my opinion you should dip your foot in the water with the Note 20 ultra. It has 120hz and a better camera system than the fold. The fold is still too fragile and a beta product in my estimation

I sold my X a little while ago anticipating that I would be buying a 12 mini. But the reported smaller battery combined with battery-hungry 5G is putting me off quite a bit. That, and the fact I'm now probably going to have to wait another month (after being without a smartphone for a month already) is pushing me towards going for either the 12 Pro or even buying an 11 Pro at a cheaper price.

I think battery should be at least better than X. X had not great battery life

I'm on the fence. I'm not sure if the changes are worth it.

I might get on the yearly Apple upgrade plan.

My wife and I kept our phones usually for 2 years. Last few generations we upgraded annually because the iUP plan makes it so easy to upgrade (few clicks in an email, done).

I'm really against the idea of upgrading this year. Yes, bigger camera sensor interests me ... but I want USB C. If I get a phone it will be the 12 Pro Max... and ... the iPhone 13 will be released 9 months after the 12 Pro Max is (maybe?). I'd rather just wait. I continue to be surprised by the quality of the 11 Pro Max photos, the speed of the device, and battery longevity (100%).

I have no excuse to upgrade and plan not to. I said the same thing with the Xs Max to the 11 Pro Max - but there was an extra camera... etc. I also went from a 512 Xs Max to a 256 11 Pro Max (lower monthly payments). lol.

My wife and I upgraded watches this year so... I highly doubt it.

I know a lot of people with older iPhones so I imagine Apple will rake it in as always.

I used to have to get the latest iPhone every year but it just doesn’t matter to me anymore. Maybe it is because I am getting nearer age 40. I got a discount on my iPhone 11 Pro Max in July and will be keeping it for the next two years. It does everything I need it to and nothing about the iPhone 12 Pro Max specs would make me want to instantly upgrade. I don’t care about camera specs or how much zoom it can do because any iPhone from the last few years has taken really good photos. I hope everyone who is upgrading this year enjoys their new iPhone though.

The only reason I got iPhone 11 Pro was dark mode. Unless Apple has a trick besides 5g (which is a joke still) I’ll probably pass. Besides I’ll probably want mini led iPad later.

I am exactly following your advice. I will update by 7 day one with 12 day one ;)

Generaly speaking, upgrading a flagship iPhone bought day one with less than 2 years is a just waste of money. Some people are just convinced by any marketing stuff even when a product is mature (very incremental yearly upgrades vs first iPhones yearly evolution). I feel like they buy more the joy of the unboxing of brand new device rather than truly exploit their new device.

I have an iPhone 11 Pro and if I upgrade this year I am just being an absolute mug. The design changes aren't exciting anymore like they used to be in the early days and 5G in the UK is pretty worthless right now, in fact its not great worldwide and is just not needed. The 4G speeds I get are more than fast enough, I navigate to a webpage, it loads instantly, what more do I need from such a small device?

If you believe the rumours Apple removed the charger and EarPods as 5G is more expensive, so you are losing things out of the box for something you don't need, and for many people will not even be used potentially until the iPhone 13 or beyond.

Nah its a hard pass from me, especially as I have just bought a Series 6 SS with SS link bracelet. I think I have spent enough :D
