So, I bought the first iPhone on day 1 - $599. Last year I bought the 3G at $299 (16GB white). I am ineligible for upgrade prices until December, but the thought of not having the latest and greatest iPhone is killing me. So I am thinking about paying the $399 for the new 3GS tomorrow (and then hopefully selling my 3G for like $250 or $300). Is anyone else paying the extra amount or does this seem ridiculous - I mean waiting til December seems like the rationale thing, right?

I paid the $499, then AT&T announced their new policy so in the end I will be paying $299. The point though is that I was willing to, and did, pay premium for it. I'm the same way, have to have the latest and greatest.

I bought the original iPhone on its release day AND the 3G iPhone last year on release day

I am taking this one out and just not upgrading. Not worth, imo.

My bill is about $80 monthly so I just can't justify $599 for a phone at the moment

How much are a video camera and a compass worth to you right now? If you're making you're own version of Man vs. Wild, upgrade now. If not, you can probably make it til Dec.

I'm selling my 16GB 3G for $400 tomorrow (assuming the unlock is released--the guy wants to use it on T-Mobile), and buying either the 16 or 32 GB 3G S this weekend. I'll be paying either $399 or $499, depending on whether my head or my heart prevails. :p

I didn't buy the 2G, but I bought the 3G a week after launch.

nope paying about $60 for it, had I not sold my iPhone 3G... then maybe maybe not, I wouldn't be looking to get it at launch that's for sure

It's not just about the video and compass. I am out of space on my 16GB and will gladly pay full price for the new phone for the extra storage.

I have to pay CHF 1200 initially because Swisscom won't subsidize it on our corporate plan in the store and I have to wait for a cheque. But the subsidy is CHF 1000, so the total net cost in a few weeks will only be 200.

Yes, waiting until December is the rational thing.

Better yet, wait until next year.

Your 2yr contract will be up.
AT&T exclusivity will have run out.
An even better iPhone will be out with more significant improvements

Most logical choice. But my irrational side say Buy Buy Buy! :p

I almost bit the bullet and paid $499 for the 32GB 3G S, but I was somehow able to overcome my unrelenting temptation and will wait until August 3rd when I'm eligible for the $299 price.

I bought the original iPhone at $300, then the 3G a year later at $300 as well, and now the 3GS for $500.

As good as that sounds, AT&T has the best service around here, so I'm stuck with them anyway, unless Alltel got one, and even then AT&T still has the better service

paid $599 for iphone

sold iphone for $200

bought iphone 3G for $200

sold iphone 3G for $450

buying iphone 3G S for $400

I completely agree actually. I'm out of room on my 16GB as well but he stated he was thinking about the $399 3G S so he must not be worried about extra space.

Err.. I think you're eligible now since AT&T made the adjustments to the dates.

As for my iPhone purchase.. I'm buying at $499, but plan on selling my current.

Previously Bought a refurb iPhone 2G 16GB for $319 after a coupon. Sold it for $330. Bought the 16GB 3G at $299. So I get to play for a year until the next one doing the Buy/Sell cycle. Hoping the unlock tomorrow bumps the value of the 3G a bit. I'm just not sure why people have such a problem with the buying/selling logic.. ;) I use that logic with my computer upgrades too :D

Sorry... forgot to clarify that I'll be using the upgrade eligibility of another line on my family plan. My iPhone line is not eligible until March 2010, but another line will be eligible on August 3rd. :)
