As a videophile used to high definition and retina displays, iPad Mini wasn't a pleasant surprise.

If you'd never seen a retina maybe you'd swear the Mini's screen was the finest ever. Can I tell the difference? Yes. The same rez as iPad 2 squeezed into the smaller size makes little difference. Unless your obsessive about it you should soon forget and just enjoy.

I have played with the iPad mini this morning, and honestly after seeing that, I don't think Apple will change the display in the 2nd generation.

The screen itself looks retina when look down on the display table.

The screen looks sharp under normal reading.

The screen's pixels are visible when you want to look hard and close to see the pixels, even then it's so small and doesn't bother me. (almost smaller than the size of the needle tip).

It feels better than the iPad 3/iPad 4 and screen looks good enough under normal viewing distance. I picked one up.

Agreed, the screen is better than I expected after reading all the posts from those who haven't had one ;)

It's clear and sharp, will be an excellent ereader and browser. My PDF magazines display perfectly clearly as well.

Just had mine delivered and it's a fail I'm afraid. Apart from debris under the glass the display is a killer for me. Just simply not anywhere near as good as my Nexus 7.

Pity.

If you have already Nexus 7, why would you order iPad mini?

Don't let people on here get you down on your purchase. Spend some time enjoying the device. I have an iPad 2 and love it. Actually spent 5 hours last night reading a book on it that I couldn't put down. If the Mini's display is as good (apparently it's slightly better) I will be more than satisfied.

Now that I played with it some more, I'm so happy with the smaller size. I'm typing this easily with two hands whereas on my iPad 3 it was really weird doing so.

No issues with the Retina... I don't have a retina iPad but do have a Retina iPhone. I am just fine with the mini's screen. To much ado about nothing from some of the bashers. This is an excellent entry level iPad... .remember that.. .entry level. The form factor is perfect. Weight has never been to big an issue for me but this thing is so light and typing on this thing is much easier.

Happy with my purchase so far.

So interesting that a 23% increase in PPI from the iPad 2 to the iPad Mini....and "now" everyone says it looks great.

Mind you, this is all your opinion. I feel like we're playing tag in different threads (or, rather, I'm playing tag by myself on your threads...lol). I had the opposite reaction as you. The screen does indeed look better than my iPad 2's screen, but it certainly looks much more pixelated than my iPad 3's. I could obviously do just fine if I had to use this device as my daily driver. But I don't, so I'll pass until rev 2 next year.

I would guess rev 3 :) So wait for 2 more years.

The web can be tad bit crude with the tiny fonts, but otherwise it looks great.

This.

Got mine delivered this morning and I'd played with it for about an hour before I even thought about comparing the screen. Direct comparison to my iPad 3 shows up the difference and you can see the lack of res on web pages with small fonts but overall, I'm SO pleased I went with this.

Selling the iPad 3 this weekend. No regrets.

Minimum font size setting would go a long, long ways to making the screen more tolerable. Too bad the accessibility font settings don't apply across the board, including to web pages.

While I agree with the need for the mini to eventually have a retina display, I am not interested if the addition of retina increases the weight or height.

I dont see how it cannot. The panel will be heavier as will the battery needed to drive it.

In a year, there could be display improvements but with Apple leaving behind Samsung I would not count on a retina mini for at least a year.

Nevertheless, I am torn having used the mini today. If you've used retina you will see the difference.

Anyone decide not to get the mini after seeing the screen in person?

From everything I heard/read I expected to hate the screen but I think this is over-hyped. The screen is fine and I now own one.

I checked out both today- the mini and NookHd.

NookHD screen is much better.
As a simple reading device- which seems to be what most folks are considering the mini for- the NookHd is the clear winner.

Or kindle. Amazon book selection isn't bad.

Just seen it and I'm put off by the screen and it's wider than my Nexus 7. Feels like a downgrade if I switch. $200 for a Nexus 16gig is still the better deal. What good are iPad apps if the screen sucks and it's bigger? I would have swallowed the price if it had a better screen. Maybe next year but everybody else is not standing still. IPad 4 is better than the Nexus 7 but your now back at a heavier and more expensive device.

UPS delivered my mini at 11 this morning.

By 2 I was at the Apple store ready to replace it with a 4. I put them side by side and while I noticed a difference I wasn't blown away, yet.

I'm going to give it a few days and use it like I do my big one. I love the form factor and the weight is hard to pass up.

I'm torn as I like the small size but the screen size is tough.
