I'm not asking for peoples opinions or what they think about the next gen phone, I am asking for anyone pursuing this route now or soon. I've never gone this path before but I recall in years past how phone values drop a lot when the new one is announced and want to try a new plan this yr to avoid signing a new contract all the time (however I am on a fam plan and we all rotate upgrades but I dont' see a need to if I can upgrade my phone by selling and buying outright for the same price as upgrading).

The latest rumor puts the iP5 release around September I believe. You seem to only be focusing on the resale value of your iPhone 5, and not the resale value of the phone you'd be using in between -- such as the HTC One you mentioned. The resale value on that phone will be lower as well since they are readily available and by then there will other more advanced Android handsets. Hype is already building for the rumored Motorola X that is apparently going to be high end, available on every carrier and run pure Android.

I think it would be a lot less trouble and probably no more expensive to simply wait for the iP5 and sell your current iPhone then--even at the discount.

I doubt we'll see the iPhone 5S announced at WWDC, or anytime in June for that matter. August or September seems like a safe bet to me. With that being said, I am planning on selling my iPhone 5 before or after the 5S is released. It just depends on if I can find another phone to use.

I think it is a stupid idea personally. You are selling an iPhone to get an extra 70 or 100 dollars, but then you are paying monthly cell phone charges without a phone for several months that will likely be more than your increased amount of selling now.

Sell the iPhone and jump ship to the HTC one, iPhone cannot hold a candle to this beast. The 5s or 6 or 6s is going to be way behind this monster.

I am seeing that the new iPhone is rumored to be announced around June 20th and was wondering if any members have already sold or getting ready to sell their iPhone 5 to get maximum value before the next gen iPhone is announced.

This year, instead of signing a new 2 yr contract, I am planning on selling my iPhone 5 and planning on buying the next gen iPhone outright at launch hoping to get a delta $ of ~$200-$300 similar to what i'd pay to upgrade a line anyway. Any other users do this?

What are you guys using once you sell your iPhone? Galaxy S3? HTC phones? Trying to figure out which phone I can get that is still an awesome phone and can get all of my money back when I sell or damn close - i've been looking at the HTC One; I am cool with paying the high price that they're going for as long as I can get most or all of my money back in 2 months when I get the next iPhone.

Thoughts anyone? :apple:

Sorry but I think this is incredibly greedy. If your going to sell your iphone, you do not need to spend $600 - $700 on a brand new phone just to sell it in two months. Just fork out 20-30 bucks and grab a prepaid phone for two months. You'll lose money on it, nothing holds it's resale value like an iphone once it's been opened, pristine condition or not, and in two months the htc one will experience a bit of a price drop.

Plus you'll use a htc one and never want to go back to iPhone!!

What is it with iphone owners not even having their phone for a year before selling, like come on the phone isn't even ten months old yet. It's still an excellent piece of software and technology. There's no real need to upgrade every year and it doesn't make sense, your going to lose alot of money over time just to show off to your friends that you have the latest iphone.e

It's catch 22 whether you sell before or after the new model's release. There is a loss involved in either case.

As others have mentioned, selling early will net you a few more bucks at the expense of not having a phone to use while still paying for service. Of course selling later will lower the resale value of your phone although, from past experience, not by much.

Selling later is my preferred choice. It gives me the option to sit back and really evaluate whether the new model is worth getting.

I already have a buyer lined up for my iP5, it's my sister in law. She's using an old BB and wants to get an iPhone so she's gonna wait for me to upgrade and buy mine. I'm not on contract as I bought my iPhone directly from Apple, unlocked with AppleCare+, and will be doing the same when buying the new one.

there will be no iphone in WWDC, only iOS. and that will be in beta, and need developers to test it.

so the next iphone could be in around october (worst scenario), so think about that if you're going to go without an iphone.

Every year I sell my existing phone for the new one. But every year I wait until the new ones announced, and I see what I'm getting. And also when it goes on sale. Selling now isn't going to get u that much more $ then if u wait until the new one is announced. And even if they announce it at WWDC, it most likely won't go on sale until the fall sometime. I think it would be stupid to buy a new HTC or galaxy to use as an in between phone. If anything, use a 3GS or 4 until then. But if I were u, I'd wait and see whats coming. If the the 5s doesn't have something great, I may just stick with my 5 and ios7.

If anyone is selling a 5 (ATT) let me know, i'm interested. I'm working on a project at work and it would be a bit easier on the iPhone (and unfortunately, work won't pay for it)

I switched from the 4S to the GS3. I love the screen but miss iMessage and find my iphone. Also struggle with 'stability' at times. But I also have an iPad for some of these things.

Honestly, i'd like to have both phones (5 and GS3) Not sure there is an easy way to switch back and forth though.

No matter what Apple does with the 5S, it will dissapoint a lot of people. That's the way it works when you don't take a shotgun approach to production and instead focus on a product that satisfies the MOST number of people.

It's an absolute testament to how awesome the iPhone is that so many people "compromise" and still use an iPhone even though it's not what the "want" (either in regards to screen size, customization, storage, etc.).

I'll be buying one, and I'll be waiting until AFTER launch to sell my 5. If it costs me $50 like it did with the 4S, so be it. For $50 I got to never be without the top of the line iPhone and never had to make any compromises with an old phone.

Then again, I don't stress out over losing $50 when it comes to making myself happy. I'm sure some people would eat for a month on that... although if that is your situation, I would say ditch the iPhone and acquire more food instead :p

I've owned iOS devices since 2008. I've always skipped a generation, and its always worked out great that way.

Upgrading to every new model is for the die hard apple fans or people who don't have to worry about money.

I did this last year. Last August(ish) I traded my 4S for a Galaxy S3. Not having an iPhone for those few weeks was so incredibly frustrating that I'd never do it again- even if it was an extra hundred bucks for selling earlier.
