It won't affect my buying decision however I'll be mildly disappointed.

App reloads caused by a lack of RAM is what annoys me. With an iPhone 5 it isn't too bad, but with my 4S its getting nearly insufferable. Leaving tapatalk to reference something in Safari nearly always means tapatalk will refresh leaving me to navigate back to where I left off.

Point being 512 mb is obviously not enough, 1 gb is already pushing it on iOS 7 and the memory usage limits set by Apple for developers. Using 1 gb again for a new iPhone seems to be very short sighted for future proofing an iPhone and placing a future handicap on devs who will have to wait another year for all devices to be more then 1 gb (iOS 12 assuming 4 year life cycle lol).

Although we obviously won't see it in iOS 8 it would be nice to see some sort of memory compression like in OSX in iOS. To me that seems like the best place to use it as most OSX boxes RAM can be upgraded, and if not they can at least be purchased with more RAM. Meanwhile iOS devices are stuck with what they are given.

I'm not happy about 1gb RAM but it's not enough to make me leave the iPhone. (Not YET at least.)

I'm taking a wait and see approach.

I think the wait and see approach makes sense, given the extra broad range of rumours. Even after the event at the tomb they're building, only once it's in the hands the public will we know the truth.

Quality of assembly concerns me since after waiting years suddenly they're rushing it out before the Android makers get more of a head start. Also their may be a difference between the two different factories that Apple has contracted with. One has experience, one doesn't.

One things for sure, waiting gives us the enjoyment of sitting back watching as others act as beta testers.

It wasn't that long ago that my desktop computer had 256MB of RAM and I was entirely excited about it.

1GB is fine.

Define "wasn't that long ago"....lol

I have a Dell Dimension 8100 purchased from Dell in Sept, 1999 with 1 gb RAM. At the time that was a lot of RAM but thats 4x what you are talking about from 15 years ago...lol.

I agree.

As much as I want and need a new iPhone I'm actually looking forward to seeing it in use and how people on this forum respond.

I got burned on the iPad 3 and then the iPad Air (mostly iOS 7.0 issues there) so I'm in no rush to be first in line to ever buy another Apple product.

Your honesty and wisdom is refreshing.

If more people took this approach, Apple would have to get serious and produce the true high quality, properly functioning products like they're capable of doing.

Sadly they've learned what they can get away with as quality declines, and now they build to that standard. I've been an Apple customer for too long to not know the difference.

Omg people get over the ram issue. Comparing ram on an iPhone to ram on a laptop or pc is stupid. You have much more complex applications on the laptop then the phone thus not needing as much ram.

I'd like it to have 2GB, but I know it'll run fine with 1GB. RAM won't affect if I buy one.

What's wrong with your iPad Air? Mine's been nothing but a champ.

I don't care if it stays with 1GB of RAM. 1GB has been serving me perfectly fine so far. Would 2GB be nicer? I suppose, but it's not something I stress over.

Obviously it would be better if it had more memory. Maybe they re worked something in iOS so that my tabs never lose data and or reload. As with all new products I'll wait and see what the people say for the first few weeks before buying.

When it was first released iOS 7.0 was very unstable especially on 64 bit devices. Safari and springboard crashing was quite common. Apple took longer then I cared to wait for iOS 7.1 which they addressed many of those issues. I returned it before that release.

However even now Safari would refresh tabs more often then I liked, too often for me to use it at work as a tool. Honestly I don't know if that is a RAM issue or not, and frankly I don't really care...its an issue that effects me and the way I use an iPad enough to warrant not buying one until its addressed.

And btw before anyone says anything I know of the work arounds for the issue and none of them work for me. I'll just use a tablet that works like I want it out of the box.

That wasn't my experience. I don't know that I've had safari crash on my more than handful of times since I got my iPad Air, and I got it the day they came out.

I'm not even sure what you're doing to get springboard to crash. :)

Tab refreshing doesn't mean it's not working out of the box. It just means you're using more RAM than the device has, so it's necessarily swapped some of that out of residence. That's pretty standard behavior.

I can see that tab refresh might annoy some people since if a tab refreshes (due to it having been swapped out of RAM), there'll be a slight pause as the page comes back to life. In my usage case, I take advantage of that 'auto-refresh'. Many of the tabs I have open are things like MacRumors. When I go back to that tab, I don't need to hit the refresh button to see if anything new has come up or if I have any quote notifications, etc (which is why I'm going there in the first place), the fact that it refreshes instantly tells me this.

I'm not even going to try to suggest that it doesn't impact your work flow. You've clearly stated that it does. But tab-refresh is not symptomatic of a bug.

What do you mean? You mean you question why the actual hardware or lack there of (tiny battery, tiny screen, small amount of RAM, no barometer, no NFC, no IR blaster, no expandable memory slot, no stereo speakers, etc etc) carries the same or HIGHER price tag as the competition? hehe

Maybe its the software? With all the features iOS is adopting that competition has been using for years. With iOS 7 it was kind of comical to see things like control center and the updated multitasking switcher witch were blatant copies (if you will). With iOS 8 now its not even funny its just leaves me shaking my head. Although I do enjoy the additional functionality and some nice priority features like hand off, continuity, sms, and phone calls on OSX and wifi iPad are slick too but obviously require more Apple products other then an iPhone to be useful.

Keep in mind Apples focus in 7.1 were to fix those above mentioned issues. A multi billion dollar company such as Apple didn't go out of there way to fix the problems 'cynics' was having with his iPad Air.

As far as tab refreshing goes the last straw for me was I was filling out a information on a work web page. People started talking about lunch so I switched tabs to order from a pizzeria for everyone at the office. Half way through the order it dawned on me I might lose everything I was typing in my other tab. I switched to it, and it refreshed, lost everything. Switched back to my lunch order, it refreshed, lost everything. Under SLIGHTLY different circumstances I would have smashed the iPad. Regardless thank god no other browser comes with the craptastic tab auto refresh "feature".

The solutions in the iPad section are to copy everything you type to clipboard constantly as a fail safe. Or use a different browser like Atomic. Since Safari is the default browser and syncs across my cloud to my iPhone and Mac neither of those are acceptable options for me. There are pages upon pages and threads upon threads of this in the iPad section not like I'm the only person to have this issue.

I skipping because I don't want a big screen. I'll stick with the 5S as long as I can and hope Apple comes to its' senses.

I think it's great that they are building larger phones for people who want them but there a still a lot of people that don't want them.

What do you mean "its senses"?

You obviously haven't used Safari on an iPad Air with iOS 7. Try to compose a long MacRumors post, switch tabs and then come back and see if your post is still there. 1GB RAM isn't enough for all use cases.

OP, you do realize that you're asking Apple fans right?

Apple fans are referred to as "sheep" for a reason.

They'd buy iPhone 6, even if it had 128MB of RAM and would justify it somehow.

Oh please. Skipping a phone that hasn't been released because of some spec that hasn't been announced based on a rumour when you probably won't ever notice the difference between 1 and 2GB.

I lol'd.

Not because of ram.

I may pass on it because the 5.5" is too big or expensive, or I'm afraid its too thin and may not be as strong as I want it. Additionally I may pass on it if I don't think there's enough changes built into it to justify unloading my iPhone 5c

hey all. first time poster, long time lurker. excuse my lack of shift key and apostrophes... and spelling. please let me know if talking about jailbreaking is against "things not to do" #8.

i really want the phone, but after dealing with a jailbroken iphone4 since release, i cant just blindly get this phone if it only has 1 gig of ram. Im honestly not a fanboy one way or the other. I dont mind learning new devices/operating environments. unless apple lets me change my default app for maps, and edit my own gestures, i am going to jailbreak, and if i jailbreak, 1 gig of ram is not enough. that is how i sum up my position.

i know that apple opened up their system a bit more for ios8 app devs, so i am hoping that optimization can be retained by devs doing with signed apps what i have been doing with a jailbroken phone. but if they did not open up the system enough, then i will most likely get an m8, g3, x+1, s5 or z3 (all of which have 2+ gig and the ability to change the default map app).

many of the tweaks i have installed are for seemless operability, which apple somewhat address with in app sms and email. but now that most of cydia gives me the small screen bug now, i am stuck with a phone i dont want to upgrade due to its lack of hardware, and no longer able to get to work the way i want due to lack of support for the device by devs.

the purpose of this post was none other than to state my position. I was hoping that i would just be able to get the iphone6 with 2 gigs and jailbreak it, but now i have to think about which device i want to get. I dont think that was apple's intent. If they are able to give me google maps as default, with the functionality of lockscreen+bitesms and activator, i would be happy... but i doubt that will happen at launch... and my iphone4 is saying i cant wait.
