I have three iPhones, the 2G and the 3G S are on 3.0. The 3G phone was on 3.0 as well but I was having trouble running one app so I downgraded to 2.2.1.

I used pwnage 2.5 to downgrade 3G phone. It was easy, it simply created the custom firmware and I restored the phone using that firmware.

I have a 2G and everything runs fine on 3.0

The only issue i have is i cant backup my phone now with iTunes but i have read that Apple knows there is an issue with that and it will be fixed with 3.1. I hope so but other than that, i have no problems at all with what you discribed.

This bugs me still: 3G-vs-3GS.gif

Also, I hate launching third party apps because the animation doesn't look right. Instead of the home screen icons flying away (like normal) they completely disappear (or you only see a glimpse of them at the edge of the screen). It doesn't look the same as launching a built in Apple app. I've noticed that MOST third party apps do this. (Things.app seems a little better for some reason).

Also, opening the keyboard in Message.app is stuttery (not the case in 2.2.1).

On 2.2.1, everything is smooth as silk.

Odd. Mine backups up as normal. It takes maybe 3-5 seconds to start off when it used to be almost instantaneous, but backup time is the same as before even so.

My wife has a 3G and with 3.0 it works great. There's absolutely no reason for her to be tempted to downgrade. I'm not sure why the OP is stating how great 2.2.1 is over 3.0 but for me (actually my wife) 3.0 on the 3G works flawlessly.

Yeah but you are also very picky and possibly the pickiest one in here. I did check out what you mean and really that is just very OCD picky. And the Reg Apple icons dont all scatter for me either but again, that is really picky and i didnt even notice til you mentioned it. As long as the app loads, i couldnt care less.

Maybe you should get a different phone since you seem to coddle the iPhone like some sort of sacred item. It is a phone that does many things. Enjoy it instead of worrying so much about it being perfect in every way.

I see what you mean. I shouldn't care if it's slower, choppier and has beta-level graphics. I should just get over it.

The only reason I care is because 2.2.1 runs beautifuly on my iPhone 3G and I'm not sure if I wanna give up that user experience for some extra functions. It's the same reason I didn't jailbreak... because it slowed down the phone.

I'm telling you... after using 3.0 for a month and going back to 2.2.1... it's like having an iPhone 3GS.

Oh yeah... and GPS works in 2.2.1.

I thought you recently got a replacement? It's already "poor old" ?

Last count i saw was SIX replacements and he now has a "perfect iPhone"

To answer spaz' question.....No i havent went back to 2.2.1 because my phone i think is actually a bit faster with 3.0 and again, i only have the backup in iTunes issue which i hope gets fixed with 3.1

No, you should care if it runs worse on 3.0 which you fixed. Good for you and im glad. Use what works best for you, i agree with that. For some reason not all these phones respond the same to changes for which i dont see why.
Why can one person with a 2G backup his on iTunes while i cant yet my MMS works on mine but theirs wont?

Im talking about everything else you are talking about like scattering icons instead of them just disappearing when the object of them IS to go away when you launch another App. And past gripes like Buttons that arent flush enough for your liking, or not being able to touch your phone after you eat and have to scrub your hands before doing so, ...etc, etc

Those things are very picky to me.

Seriously if that 1 pixel difference bothers you that much you have issues. I'm very ocd with crap like that but even that took me a few seconds to see what the difference was. And after I saw it, my life didn't shut down. Move on.

First off: I got my "perfect" iPhone 3G in October 2008... it's FAR from new. It's used... I've put scratches in it since then. Since the scratches were my fault, they don't bother me... I accept them.

Second: I'm very used to having good experiences with Apple products. Yes, those little details that I care about actually make Apple better than the other companies with the "If it works, who cares what it looks like" attitude. Yes, I know the icons are meant to disappear anyway, but the visual effect is lacking and that's now how it *should* be.

I'm the same person that won't stretch a 4:3 picture across a wide screen TV. I also hate interlace lines. I can also tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps. There are people who would never notice those things or even care about them. If those people ran those companies... we wouldn't have the advanced technology we have today. Do you see where I'm coming from? Yeah, the average people don't notice the little details, but they still appreciate them without even knowing it. There used to be a time when Apple was all about high quality design and well built products... that seems to be lacking on the iPhone.

It's frustrating to submit all of these bugs and see nothing being done about them.

I don't have issues... I'm on 2.2.1 now. All better see? I choose form over function any day... it's just the way I am.

Go back to 1.0 and watch it fly!

Yup, considering that the iPhone was actually designed with 1.0 in mind ...

Next post: How does one downgrade to OS 1.0.

Followed by dozens of 'OMG!! 1.0 is SO fast and non-beta animations!' posts. ;)

Even though I don't think anyone here particularly needs to know what firmware TheSpaz is using this week, and even though it's annoying to see someone using the forums as a personal blog, I do agree that 2.2.1 was much faster on the older hardware. If you want decent 3.0 performance, you'll need to upgrade to the 3GS, IMO. We just don't need to hear about it. ;)

I wanted to send out a great big sarcastic thanks because now I notice the lag.

Downgrade to 2.2.1! I'm so glad I did. My iPhone feels like an iPhone 3GS now... obviously not as fast but the graphics are pretty darn smooth.
