Anyone switch from a 38mm to 42mm? Why?

I bought a 38 originally as soon as you could order (before being able to see it in the store) but after having it for a while and seeing friends' 42 I decided I wanted a 42. I'm glad I made the switch. The screen displays a bit more, is a little bit easier to enter the passcode and click on the options I want to click on (eg dismiss on a text), and there is a noticeable difference in battery life in my experience.

as a counter to not put off the OP; the screen displaying a little less in the 38mm OP wants to go to won't be much of an issue unless he constantly receives messages of an exact length that *just* doesn't fit on screen. Passcode entry is much easier since watch os 2 came out (and if OP has iphone 5S or above, there's no need to ever enter a passcode, it can be unlocked along with the phone) and watch os 2.0.1 has improved batter life on my 38mm far beyond whats necessary for most people for a full day. I wore the watch 15 hours yesterday, including a half hour workout, and put it on charge with 55% left.

I wanted the 38mm Hermès single tour for the same reason others have stated. A classic watch size. I don't like anything larger than 40mm round. My Pebble Steel is also 38mm top to bottom without the lugs.

I did my due diligence and discovered that the 38mm Hermès strap is sized smaller than most Apple straps, only fitting to 180mm. My wrist is 180 - 184mm depending on temperature and expansion. Trying one on was not an option...

I'll receive my 42mm ebay purchase next week. We'll see if the Hermès Espace face that I love is enough, or if I made the wrong decision. I just couldn't shell out the extra money for the Hermès edition with their great handmade and stitched strap and then have to buy another that fit.

I love holding down the "e" key on my keyboard all the time. That alone makes it all worth it. Makes me feel special.

could you not have bought one from apple to try, with the intention of returning it anyway?

Perfectly stated. Especially with the link bands. I usually wear the leather band and people only notice I have the AW if I am wearing the sport bands. I think it looks pretty damn good and not "techie" at all b.c of the size

Can you please tell me what band and size is your watch in the picture ?? Thanks !

Although I live in L.A., I'm on the road all the time. That's what I was alluding to when I stated, "Trying one on was not an option." The Hermès is not available for online purchase from Apple or Hermès, only from a few select stores. Not even Chicago or Dallas made the cut. And of course if I managed to get to a store, I could try it on first. Not to mention I read they are out of stock, sold out...

oops! forgot they weren't for sale online.

They are out of stock, but you can still try them on. That is, they have models on hand for try-ons that are not for sale.

There are so many amazing watch straps on the market that I'm not sure I'd pick the larger size, simply because of the Hermes strap. Get ahold of some separate lugs, and you could easily spend hundreds on a great leather strap from another maker for the 38mm watch. Plus, the strap will be 22mm, rather than the 24mm strap of the 42mm watch. 22mm is already on the big side, to me (Rolex leather usually starts at 20mm.)

We share the same views. My current 2 mechanicals and the quartz X-33 all have 20mm straps and that's the size I prefer (although it looks a little small on the 42mm X-33) The 24mm at the lug is something I thought about. I do want to try the Hermès strap though. Paying all the extra dough for a watch face seems a bit much, although yes I could sell the strap...

I just learned from iMore that some of the Apple faces on the Hermès watch have some Hermes red/orange complications as a bonus.

I can rationalize the 42mm when I think of my aging eyes, and reading text from it. I realize it's not really larger on the 42...

Damn thing is, maybe the 38mm strap DOES just fit, but I wasn't going to pay a premium ebay price and find out otherwise.

Although... I am loading in N.J. tonight, 20 miles from the 24 hr 5th Ave Apple Store, and I have till Monday to get a little past Chicago to deliver. I COULD grab an Uber... I've delivered to the city in the past (Brooklyn, Long Island) and was in Manhattan with a rig once. That was enough.

I just called and was told the 5th Ave store doesn't have any 38mm single tours, not even to try on... Probably best this way. :)

The 42mm should be in my hands by the end of the week. Since I got it for a rather good price, I don't think I'll have a problem selling it if it should come to that.

What a diversion from real life these things are...

It is extremely low and once they go for sale they're sold pretty quick.

if you find one, i'd say go for it. the main differences are visual - how it looks on the wrist. the other differences are much less important and most of them are arguably irrelevant to most (except the "mine's better than yours because it's 1% faster" crowd - i truly believe they don't affect the functionality of the watch in any discernible way!)

For me and I think for most g-shock users the size of the data displayed is extremely similar if not smaller on the 38mm or 42mm.

Based on what others have said battery life would probably be my only concern but either way id be charging it every night.

I usually end the day with around 40% left on the 38mm. I guess it sometimes is a little lower if I use the workout app when I cycle.
