I've been with AT&T since 2007. I decided to give up talk and surf functionality and make the switch. So far, I'm pleased the coverage is better and I get LTE at my house in the middle of the country. LTE speeds vary, but I got as high as 30mb in Cleveland and 23mb in the north Columbus area. If I need to talk and surf I just used iPad as a hotspot.

How is the consistency of LTE in Columbus? I work in Grandview and would like to know that I'd have LTE before buying the iPhone 5.

Thanks!

Switched from ATT to Verizon here in nyc midtown, and im not happy, their LTE speeds are worst then att's 3g speeds and barely connects sometimes. Im considering switching back. :(

Made the switch from AT&T to VZN at the iP4 launch to preemptively get VZN's unlimited plan while they still made it available. This basically meant that I had to endure VZN's painfully slow 3G speeds until the iP5 came out, and finally, now, I am seeing the fruits of my "labor."

Ultimately, I am pleased with my choice. VZN gives me better and more consistent LTE coverage where I'm at, so I have no complaints anymore. But man, that year and a half under VZN's 3G was truly painful...

Like others have said its all about your area. Funny thing is I had AT&T and when preorders started I chose to port my number to Verizon, with a huge factor that Verizon had LTE here and ATT didnt.

Well between preorder date and release date AT&T added LTE here so I waited in line on release day to buy an AT&T iphone 5, then returned my Verizon without activating it.

Funny thing is, although Verizon shows LTE here, one of my coworkers who got an iphone 5 on verizon cannot get LTE in our office. We did a speed test at work and I got 40 down and 20 up, she got 0.81 down and 0.1 up. Lol my other coworker with a 4s lsughed as he got 7.5 down and 1 up on AT&T HSPA+

It was then I became very satisfied with my decision, especially since I kept my unlimited data and voice and data simultaneously.

I have had two iphones with AT&T since the 3g in a love hate relationship. Sometimes dropped calls would happen over and over on major interstates in populated areas which was at the very least annoying. Other times they would work great. I had come from Verizon to AT&T solely for the iPhone years ago and it had always been my intention to go back as soon as I could. The iphone 5 was the perfect opportunity since my contract was up with AT&T. So far very happy but I do miss the simultaneous data and voice some. I had unlimited data that I also gave up with AT&T but it doesnt bother me a lot because at some point the carriers are going to force everyone off of that plan IMO. LTE coverage is great with Verizon and the stability of service is as good as I remembered. No regrets

I actually carry two iPhones for work and business, plus my iPad

I am in NYC and i am a field technician, so I am traveling from customer to customer within manhattan

I started off with a Verizon iPad 3 because their LTE seemed very promising. Well, it wasn't. The opposite, in fact. I've never used such a horrible network before. I thought it was my device, so I put my sim in an android LTE phone, and was having the same issues. These issues also exist in my iPhone 5. My partner has the exact same issue, and he's on a completely different account than I am on.

I almost never get full service. Most of the time I only see 2-3 bars OUTDOORS. This means that indoor coverage is HORRIBLE in most places - and it is. When I am on the road, the network constantly cuts in and out, which makes tethering pretty useless at times. Even while walking, the LTE service consistently cuts in and out. One minute I have 4 bars of service and moments later I lose all LTE coverage for a few seconds. This gets annoying when I'm on the web.

I switched my iPad to AT&T and what a difference. Night and day. And this is extremely surprising, being that I normally stay away from AT&T due to congestion and dropped call issues.

AT&T 3G isn't the best here. It is congested. However, most places I go, I have 4-5 bars of LTE service, and speeds are very consistent. With iOS 6 and mobile share, I'm able to tether with the iPad, and it works flawlessly. I couldn't be any happier. Indoor coverage is also perfect. The network never cuts out in manhattan, although in Brooklyn it is definitely noticeable that the LTE cell sites are very spaced out, and I'm hoping coverage will be improved in the future.

In April I went to Miami with my Verizon iPad, and it was even worse than NYC!! Couldn't drive more than two blocks without getting knocked off LTE. Web browsing and tethering were completely useless unless I was in a fixed spot, and even then, it was sometimes problematic. I just came back from Miami last week with my AT&T iPad, and again, night and day difference

Overall, both in Miami and NYC, AT&T speed tests were 10 Mbps faster than Verizon's in the exact same location. AT&T also has less latency than Verizon, so web browsing is snappier. In many areas, Verizon's network gets much slower, which is normal due to congestion, but AT&T still shows to be faster in that same area

This is very very disappointing on Verizon's end. They are supposed to be the better network, and if they keep up with theyr crappy LTE network, I will not be looking forward to Voice Over LTE. They're so confident of their network that they said they will not be doing LTE to CDMA handoffs during calls in the event that LTE signal drops. Big mistake here. Calls will definitely be dropping eft and right especially indoors.

I am someone that uses 3000+ minutes per month and a total of 10 GB per month across my 3 devices. Therefore, consistency is very important to me

I know what you mean about that HSPA+ speed, but after getting 512kbps on average for the last year on Verizon's 3G network, 2-3mbps down sounds pretty awesome. :D

I get a average of 2mbps on verizon 3G, and 40 using the LTE, where do you live that you get such awful coverage?

Bloomington, IL

Just the opposite for me.

Had Verizon LTE Droid. I had no LTE at home and work only about 50% of the time, even though it says I am in a solid coverage area in both spots. The 3G on Verizon runs around 100 - 250 kbps here. Their LTE is spotty, due to how far they space their towers, and usually gets anywhere from 4 mbps all the way up to 20 mbps if it will hold the connection. I averaged around 2-3 bars of service on a 5 bar scale around town, and dropped roughly 1 to 2 calls a night in my living room.

I switched to AT&T in hopes they will get LTE here in the near future for the iPhone 5. Funny thing is I don't even care anymore. With their HSPA+ I am getting around 3-10 mbps, and am completely happy with that. I get 3-4 bars on average, with WAY better building penetration. My "4G" hasn't bounced to EDGE and back at all like my droid did from LTE to 3G, and no dropped calls for me. AT&T is definitely the most solid choice here. I listened to all the horror stories for years and kept putting up with bad Verizon service because I was just sure AT&T would be worse. It really does just boil down to where you live. I will say on the road I notice that there are a couple locations in the middle of nowhere that I used to have signal, where I get no service. I spend 90% of my time in Bloomington though so it isn't really that big of a deal.

My AT&T iPhone 5 on "4G" vs My mom's Verizon Galaxy S3 on LTE right now

ATT iPhone
Latency - 76 ms
Download - 4.6 mbps
Upload - 2.36 mbps

Galaxy S3
Latency - 49 ms
Download - 7.4 mbps
Upload 3.9 mbps

Not a huge difference, can't wait to see what AT&T LTE looks like when it's launched.

3G is ok if you're just browsing the web, the LTE speeds are just overkill. It takes no more than 6 seconds to load worldstarhiphop.com a site with a lot of videos. Most times it loads in 1-2. Comparing that to AT&T which had 3-4 bars in my area (verizon 3g is on 2 bars) only sometimes would the site load in a timely manner. And yes this is on 3G. AT&T's network isn't reliable, I've been using them since the iPhone 3G and when I travel it doesn't even get good coverage in the places I go like las vegas and inside casino's at atlantic city.

My situation.

Just jumped ship from ATT to Verizon. Fired up an Iphone5. I live and work in Manhattan. Live in E. Village. Work all over the city. Now granted I've only been on network for about 48 hours, but I have to say, I'm simply appalled at the signal strength of Verizon in the city.

Just to make sure phone was in correct operating shape. I reset the network settings. And reinstalled the factory software on the iphone to make sure I had a clean slate to work with.

My issues.

1) Very limited LTE coverage. spotty at best. Weak and slow in quite a few areas. Midtown is awful.

2) Building penetration is terrible - I drop to EVDO signal "o" indoors consistently Awful.

3) In 3G areas phone will not automatically re-lock back on to LTE signals. Have to reset signal into airplane mode. And then back. Unacceptable.

The question to Verizon is...I feel like I'm back to the bad old days of the iphone1 rollout on ATT. This is terrible. While Verizon my have a nice looking map of broad LTE coverage across the USA, the depth of coverage is shallow?

Checking on other forums and postings - Verizon LTE coverage in Manhattan appears to be universally awful in relation to how it interacts with the iphone5 - And the 3G speed next to useless.

Is it time to jump back to ATT? Sadly, this may be the case.

Honestly this kind of question all comes down to the area you live in.

I live in a part of California where

No LTE yet, Verizon is coming in the next couple months.
ATT has HSPA + and from speed tests get anywhere from 7-14 mpbs .

2 years ago if I drive through parts of Los Angeles or Orange County I would get drop calls. This last year has not been the case on my 4s or when it happens it is more rare.

People on the iPhone 4s on Sprint/Verizon network will get terrible data speeds, if you are in an area with LTE and it is stable, you will be rocking. Only thing is how data do you use.

Giving up unlimited data plan is hard, I am happy that the throttle limit was increased for the iPhone 5 but it is pointless because I probably wont have LTE here for at least a year.

I rarely stream video on my iPhone, my heavy data usage is email, files through dropbox, and pandora. I use the TomTom app for a gps and all the maps are downloaded so the data impact is minimal. If ATT 3g was as bad as Verizon or Sprint I would more likely consider the switch, but it is not.

The best solution for anybody in this situation is figure out your needs and then choose from there.

I have experienced the exact opposite to what you have. LTE has been very fast and consistent in NYC and Miami/Ft.Lauderdale areas. They most likely wont be doing LTE to CDMA handoffs for multiple reasons which allow them to get people off CDMA as quickly as possible and thus allow frequency use towards LTE.

No rush for VO anything though in my book until someone looks at current laws. Apparently feds don't need a warrant to monitor anything that doesn't go through a switch.

What area in NYC are you using your phone? I'm mostly in Midtown- 5th to 8th ave between 20th and 42nd streets. And I live in Brooklyn near Bensonhurst.

Miami - I haven't been there since April. When I go in February ill have the chance to test the service once again

My NYC statement stands strong though. Very unreliable service while indoors. Half the time I look at my phone and it's on 3G and even that is sometimes unreliable.

If they don't add cell sites, VoLTE is going to be disastrous. I know you stated no rush for it, but last I checked we are right around the corner from it being released.

Jade,

I hear ya about midtown. Walking around today, I noticed that From Union Square to down to about Houston the VZ 4GLTE speeds were outstanding.

Now uptown around Times Square to 10Ave and 43rd entirely another story. Terrible. A 3G signal that wouldn't even work. I tried speedtest several times and forget it. It just chugged away endlessly looking for an available server. Super disappointing.

I hope VZ is on top of their game and up the signal strength in Manhattan. Or.... it's the iphone5, and some systemic problem with the antenna. Seeing more and more threads out there with people getting horrid coverage on their iphone5. Something's amok.

I switched from ATT to Verizon for iPhone 5 simply because Verizon had LTE in my area and ATT didn't. Although, 1 week after the launch LTE for ATT went live. Either way I can't say I'm disappointed I've never dropped a call and my LTE speeds are 50Mbps+ in most areas whereas some of my friends are getting 10Mbps on ATT.

I switched from AT&T to Verizon this year in September when the iphone 5 came out. Best move I have made in 4 years. When I first got to the area I live in 4 years ago we didn't even have 3G. EDGE was useless. Apps would often time out because the signal and speeds were so slow. All EDGE was good for was email when I was away from home.

We got 3G about 2 years ago with AT&T which helped but it wasn't great. Signal at my house was practically nonexistant so I would drop calls all the time.

With AT&T we had 2 iphone 4 phones on a shared 1400/month plan with unlimited text and 2GB data plan and an unlimited data plan. My wife used about 3 GB/month and I used about 1.5 GB/month. All together it was about $170/month. I also had my AT&T ipad 3 and that was another $30/month so all together I paid AT&T $200/month for service.

I switched to Verizon and have two iPhone 5 phones, unlimited minutes/text and a 6 GB plan for the two phones and hotspot included for the ipad to use either through BT or wifi. I now pay about $170 for everything. So far we use about less than 2 GB/month of data. I asked my wife if she changed her browsing habits or stopped streaming pandora radio all day at work like she used to. She says she still does.

So this raises the question.....where does all that extra data usage come from with AT&T when we haven't changed any of our data usage habits with our phones? Why such a big difference between 4.5 GB and less than 2 GB? I have 10 days left of this billing cycle and so far have only used 1.16 GB in 20 days. Is data somehow compressed when using LTE so that it is transmitted in smaller amounts (kind of like zipping some files together and compressing them to email them)?

Anyway, the speed of 3G and LTE in my area with Verizon is perfect. I have no problem with either of their speeds. AT&T was still kind of slow on 3G and I would frequently get no service when traveling around. So far haven't experienced that with my verizon model phone. Anyway, this is just my opinion.

Wow wow wow
I'm so happy I found someone that has the same issues as me!!!! I had an android LTE at one point and experienced the exact same issues so I know it's not specific to an iOS device.

Glad to know I'm not crazy

And oddly, AT&T LTE works fantastic in these areas plus outstanding indoor coverage as well. Never had one issue so far and using them since September.

As another poster said the theoretical download will almost never be the same as what you get. On at&t iPhone 4 it took longer for me to load worldstarhiphop.com than it did for a verizon iPhone, and this was on 3G.

On Verizon, I rarely get LTE. It's mostly 3G which is slow and hangs a lot. Don't have that issue with AT&T 3G, and even so, AT&T has complete LTE service here.

I was using it in the village other day 1st to 7th ave between 10th and 22nd as well as FDR North and Southbound towards battery park and i've had no problems with it with either voice or LTE data speeds. I was able to stream music with no hiccups and even in times when I dropped to 2-3 bars LTE remained very fast. My experience with indoors isn't as good as outside but I imagine they are working are sites in more appropriate locations as in the city it's not just the matter of plopping in more sites, its a real pain dealing with RF and minimizing interference and choosing strategic location. Storm probably didn't help any of the major carriers either.

I don't have as much experience with center miami area as I do with Fort Lauderdale but by the airport I have not had any slow downs and had great service and speed.

I think VOLTE is a longer way off than people think. They will start testing markets very slowly but by no means do I think it will be the matter of "flipping a switch" like LTE was. This is the first time in a long time the voice side of things is getting shaken up this dramatically and the first time voice is going over internet for cell phones. They will be testing backhaul and QoS software like crazy for a little bit before it's as reliable as to what we have today.

After almost 15-years with AT&T, and owning every single iPhone from the original one on...they successfully pissed me off with their horrible data network coverage where I live, which is only a mile outside of the city. Sooooo...I jumped to VZW and the iPhone 5.

After three weeks with a Verizon, I am less than impressed overall. Yes, the data coverage is marginally better than it was with AT&T where I live, but the voice service isn't even close as far as sound quality on both incoming and outgoing calls...plus the dial tone for Verizon sounds really weird compared to the one I had with AT&T. :(

I've considered jumping back to AT&T...but I would rather sit it out for a while than pay the $200+ fee to cancel my VZW account.

I was told I had ONE MONTH because it was an iphone. I switched back. I had ATT for years. I tried the Verizon iphone but like you wasn't impressed with call quality and the lack of simultaneous voice/data made me nuts. I called AT&T and told them my situation and they told me my account was considered "suspended" for 59 days. They let me go back and put everything back as it was....

fwiw, Verizon STILL charged me an ETF, but when I called them and reminded them of their policy they reversed it. Call and verify!

The problem with Verizon is that even their 3G service isn't the best indoors. The only thing they are great at is voice and nothing more. It's unfortunate that we pay so much to them and only half the service works

Spreading out their towers, thus taking advantage of their 800 MHz spectrum was a fantastic idea at one point. But this idea can only last as long as the technology is being used, and voice minutes are declining rapidly year by year. The next big thing out there is data and they really need to get their act together and invest some more money on adding cell sites.

I understand that indoor coverage is not guaranteed, but when we are teased by tmobile customers that they have full service and amazing speeds, there is no excuse for a company that charges us triple to not have the same indoor coverage as the cheaper carriers.

Verizon is new to gsm and its almost as if they're treating their gsm network like CDMA. They think they can spread the towers all over, reduce the output power by 50% and have awesome service. Doesn't work that way with GSM.

Many places that I see a cell site with Verizon and AT&T transmitters on them, I pay attention to my signal strength in dbm. AT&T keeps kicking Verizon's ass with their LTE network, especially indoors. It's an embarrassment.
