I agree with what everyone else has been saying. I made the switch last week and am not looking back.

The speed is a tiny bit slower at times but voice quality and overall coverage has been great.

I'm giving it strong thought. On the 700 minute family plan, we would save about $10-15/month over our AT&T plan. We would lose the unlimited calling to any mobile number, and that would hurt, but a lot of our friends have Verizon, so it wouldn't be as painful as initially thought.

We were thinking we'd go the Palm Pixi route more than likely for a few months, though I may pony up the extra bucks and grab a used Thunderbolt just to see what all of the fuss is about.

AT&T coverage is ok in our area, but not great. Verizon on the other hand has outstanding coverage all around us, making it a big attraction.

I would certainly miss the simultaneous voice & data, personally. I use it quite frequently.

My co-worker got a droid charge 4G, and he said he is able to do voice & data simultaneously. I agree that Verizon has better data coverage. My Verizon data is faster than my AT&T data since I am usually connected to 4G LTE. I would stick with Verizon if weren't for the phone coverage at home. Sometimes I do want to use my smartphone as a phone.:p

Yeah, you can do voice/data simultaneously on LTE, but not on 3G, which is the coverage where I live. Still, could be worth it.

I'm currently on unlimited data with ATT and was going to make the switch once the new iphone comes out. But since unlimited data is going away soon i've decided to go ahead and switch now. I just purchased 2 palm pixi plus to use until the new iphones come out.

Did you buy the Palm Pixi Plus @ Best Buy? I tried looking at Verizon website; couldnt find it?

i bought them using my amazon prime. it's was a 3rd party seller but fullfilled by amazon meaning I could still use it with prime. i went ahead and paid for over night shipping so I could get them activated early next week. people have also been buying them from newegg. you should be able to buy it for $40-50.

^^Will there be a contract if you go this way^^ ?

There won't be, unless you decide you want one. You can just sign up for a plan with your own phone, and not sign a contract though.

The thunderbolt does support simultaneous voice and data use, whether in 3G or 4G LTE coverage areas.

I'm not completely dissatisfied with AT&T. However, I can get a better discount through Verizon with my company, so I'm seriously contemplating porting my number Verizon, and selling my AT&T iPhone to pay the ETF.

I recently switched from AT&T (7 years with them) to Verizon due to the amount of dropped calls my wife and I were having. Before our 3G coverage with AT&T was excellent and hardly had any issues. Over time we started having dropped calls and our bars went down. I went to the store and complained but didn't receive any good recommendations.

Finally the wife had it with the dropped calls and requested we switch to Verizon. Since then everything has been excellent. The calls are stable and very clear. As others have said, AT&T does have faster data speeds but they aren't consistent. Even standing in the same place and doing speed tests, watching a movie, or listening to music it changes. Verizon its always the same.

I don't think we'll ever go back to AT&T.

The HTC Thunderbolt can absolutely do simultaneous voice and data whilst on 3G. 100%, not wrong, not rumor. I do it all the time. It supports SVDO, which the Charge and Revolution do not.

im going to lock unlimited with a palm pixi and going to use it until sept :D

I didn't know exactly how to put this info into its most useful form within this thread given the disparity of replies, so I picked some relevant posts above to give my content proper context.

My goal:

I wanted to go Month to Month (via an older, cheap 3G smartphone) and lock in UL data until a new(er) iPhone arrives on the scene.

In short, I found out:

  • Anyone who is thinking of locking in the UL Data Plan through Verizon via a month-to-month plan (using, for example, a Palm Pixi) -- you will NOT have the option to be grandfathered in after 7-Jul-2011. Basically, it boils down to UL data plans will only be grandfathered from contracts, NOT from month-to-month plans.

Thus one needs to sign a contract before 7-Jul-2011. :(

  • As many already know (plus I wanted to confirm again), as of this evening's conversation when I spoke with a VZ corporate CSR on the phone, 3G UL data contracts before 7-Jul-2011 will be eligible to upgrade to 4G/LTE UL data after said cut off date. How far into the future this applies, I've no clue.

Sources of this info bring in a bit of disparity, too:

  • The above info comes directly from a VZW CSR (via their corporate support line.)

  • However, earlier this week, I inquired at a local VZW Store (not a mall Kiosk) if this month-to-month scenario would work in order to retain the UL data plan using the Palm Pixi (or any 3G device). She said it would. Go figure.

So to then clarify the difference of information I received, I asked the VZW Corporate CSR if folks in their stores are sometimes a bit behind with regards to the information they have on hand, and she confirmed this fact. What she knows about their retail outlets specifically, again: I've no clue.

Summary
:

I'd like to lock in month-to-month, but I'm getting communication that tells me this method won't work post 7-Jul-2011.

Up until tonight, I thought this to be possible. But I'm hearing different.

And for the record (e.g., the content of my posts in general) -- none of the information above is to be taken as gospel (duh); I don't post with this mindset.

I just simply knew there were some (at least) going this prepaid route to lock in UL data, so I suppose I'm throwing this FYI info out to those in this particular camp.

That must be what my mom was told yesterday, re the month to month thing.

My line is a contract from way back, prior to nov 08 so I actually don't have to have data on a smartphone (and don't right now on my treo). She was supposed to be finding out if i could lock it in by adding it to that phone, but what she told me didn't make sense. It does hearing the post above about it not applying to month to month.

I know I will hate myself come September, but I'm just going to upgrade now. My treo needs to be run over by a truck.

I think i would enjoy the pixi plus, and was tempted to cancel my case order and do that (and hey, handy shopper would still work!), but no, I'm just going to go for it.

Not saying that you're wrong or anything, but this directly contradicts the answer I received when I inquired about activating a Palm Pixi Plus without a contract. This is the exact answer I was given (I was told this via email too so I do have it in writing):

"I work as a Federal Account Executive under "name removed" and he gave me your information to help you out. Yes you can activate your existing Palm under an unlimited data plan without a contract then later upgrade to any 4G device and keep the unlimited data plan."

Go figure. I guess the only way we're going to know for sure is to try it out and see what happens. I'm willing to take the risk since the Pixi Plus is only costing me $50.

But that specifically says to a 4g plan, and the iP5 probably won't be...

I definitely was getting the info 3rd hand yesterday, and the only for sure she got was yes we'd keep it going to something else after we got the ip4, but adding it to my current phone wasn't a sure thing.

I thought about this more overnight, and I'm ok with going for it. I'm guessing the ip6 will be the 4g phone, so hopefully I can just talk myself into waiting for that.

My bigger problem.... Letting go of my grandfathered iPad unlimited. Talk about HARD. I need tethering, so I need to just cancel and add that to the phone. Right? Life will continue if i don't renew it today right?

Well, maybe not today.... I don't have my ip4 yet.... Yes, I'm just going to go for it. Cancel.

Since you're planning on staying with Verizon long term anyway, couldn't you just sign a contract now, while providing your own phone. Then once the next iPhone comes out, use your new customer/upgrade eligibility for a discounted phone (which you didn't use when you provided your own phone) toward the iPhone? Even if they make you re-sign the contract then in order to use it, it's only adding a few months, and you still have your data plan.

When I worked for Sprint, we were more than happy to allow people to sign a contract any time they wanted, even if they were bringing their own phones.

Isn't unlimited data still limited in a way? When AT&T had unlimited data I got my usage to 5GB one month and the 3G slowed down to an unusable speed. I then read that AT&T started doing this around the time I got my iPhone, and that Verizon has always done this with their 3G service. I don't know if that is true or not.

And it took listening to 12+ hours of internet radio streams a day and my typical monthly usage (<1GB) to get it that high. I was actually glad when AT&T changed their plans because it saved me $5/month.

I don't really know how someone could stand to stream enough video on an iPhone to actually need unlimited data. iPad maybe? I would consider myself a heavy smart phone user, and I can't use 2GB/month unless I really tried.

I usually use around 4-5GB/month, because at my work there isn't any WIFI, and I stream ESPN Radio or Pandora all day every day. Add to that, I'm a heavy surfer while I'm out and about, and at my home our WIFI is slower than the 3G in the area by far (sad as that is). I would find it very difficult to keep my usage below 2GB/month.

As much as I hate to see unlimited 4G data slip away, I'm already under contract for another year with AT&T--and I have 3G unlimited with them with a hefty 20% discount. It would be a pain and very expensive to switch even if I sold my iPhone. Although I think the Thunderbolt is awesome, it doesn't even have Gingerbread yet and I'm not impressed by the other 4G phones Verizon has.

All I can do is *hope* that AT&T grandfathers unlimited 3G users into 4G plans -- like some Edge iPhone users were able to migrate into unlimited 3G plans even after they were discontinued. I'm not holding my breath though, I fully expect to be told that my unlimited data plan is "incompatible" with a future LTE iPhone (whenever that comes). It would a nice way to reward loyal AT&T subscribers though.

I switched to Droid on VZW back in Dec 2009 after AT&T all but forced me off of their network in a motion that nearly resulted in a class action lawsuit against them; God I wish I would have pursued that.

Anyway, I haven't been disappointed. I'm back on iPhone now, but my service is still rock solid with Verizon. I will NEVER go back to AT&T, even if I lose my unlimited data.

god its not fair. My very first iPhone im getting on July 11 (thats my upgrade date) and since ive never had a smartphone, im gunna get stuck with the crap data plans. Are there any workarounds?

Try one of these:
1. Buy a palm pixi from newegg and activate it with data plan now
2. ask them to move your upgrade up by one week
3. pay full price and ask for a price adjustment later
