My son will be 17 on the 24th and my daughter is 12. But both were once toddlers and I spent a lot of time redirecting them. My stuff is my stuff.

When my daughter was learning to walk and using the furniture to get around it was a bit easier. I could pick her up and haul her across the living room. I knew I had about 3-5 minutes or so before I had to pick her up again. She always made a beeline for my phone.

When my kids were around 5 and 10 (or so) they were given an iPhone 3GS to share between them so that helped a bit. Also, the crap tablet my dad had that my mom gave to me.

But toddler or no, it's my stuff and I want it left where I laid it down…so that's what happened. And eventually they both learned to respect other people's property. It's not theirs, they weren't allowed to walk off with it or put it in their mouth or anything else toddlers do. My wife, who is a private person was even more strict.

Oh yes, we set firm boundaries with our child as well. But the likelihood of accidents occurring so increase with a toddler. Depending on how the phone feels in my hand I might feel comfortable going caseless but getting AppleCare.

Case free is the only way to be! :)

Seriously, I've dropped phones before and think it's worth paying for AppleCare plus the small fee to get phones fixed and inconvenience of dealing with the process if the tradeoff is being able to look at the beautiful phone in all its glory.

Absolutely not. The dumbest thing you can do. I have a galaxy s7 in the drawer that is absolutely mint still because it was always in a full coverage otter box. The “fair” condition used phone category shouldn’t even exist. More people stop using cases more used phones I would never buy I guess.

I’ve never used a case on any of my phones and with the exception of my 3GS (which went through the laundry), my phones are always ‘like new’ when I trade them in the following year for the next phone. No scratches, no blemishes, nothing.

I follow a few simple rules and keep my phones pristine and don’t need to use a case which means I’m able to actually see and feel this precision piece of engineering every time I pick it up.

Not everyone is willing to make the compromises necessary to keep a phone in perfect shape without a case and that’s totally valid ... that’s why there’s cases. 😀 But it’s not appropriate to blanketly say not using a case is the dumbest thing people can do.

Correct. I have always been case-less with the exception of my XS, which I only got a case for because of travel and never took it off. I have enjoyed the additional freedom of being able to put it down a little more harshly but am looking forward to the feeling of the phone as it was intended to feel again.
It is a trade off both ways and I’d rather just be a bit more careful again and enjoy the phone as it is.

If you are a clumsy person by nature, maybe a different story.

Never used a case on any on my phones. Dropped them plenty of times never cracked a screen. My iPhone X has some minor scuffmars both on the sides and the screen, but whatever, its patina. I am 100 % willing to take a hit on the used market for not having to carry a more bulky phone, and to be able to actually see the design I've paid handsomely for.

Nope, not a chance. Could go 2 years without a significant drop or could slip out of my hands onto concrete after 2 days! Screen protector and slim, clear Spigen case - perfect combo for me.

No offense but I find that hard to believe. Everyone eventually drops their phone and probably more than once.

I personally have been case free for as long as I have owned a phone. Only reciently I put my 11pro in a case so I can put it on a mount on my motorcycle. But will my new 12pro I’m going back caseless. a case just make these phone bulky and hides the beauty. Never had issues with dropping so no reason to think it will start now.

I never used a case on iPhones (and I've had them all since the 3G) until I put one on my XS earlier last year as we were going travelling and I figured the extra protection would help in some places and situations (all the airports, in and out of bags, etc.). Since then, I've kept the case on but I'm tempted to rock my 12 Pro (out for delivery right now!) without a case again. The 229€ for AppleCare+ stings a bit but it might be the way to go for me this year. Hmm.

I could never switch to case-free, I’ve always been there. I haven’t had a case on any of the iPhones I owned. I shortly tried the free iPhone 4 bumpers, but that didn’t last long.

I’ve got AppleCare+, now conveniently by the month.

Last time I was caseless was probably the 5S and I dropped it onto concrete day 1... Didn’t break but there was a ding on the metal band.

I would love to use a full body impact clear film this time but have not found one yet that covers the front, back and sides. Might end up using a thin clear case with a tempered glass screen protector.

I ordered one for the 12 max from slickwraps but I don’t know when they are shipping. Don’t know the quality of them either first time ordering from them. ButI want to go the same route as you.

I wish I could but my screens always get all scratched to hell and I can be clumsy at times :( my kids have their own phones so they aren’t constantly on mine now. I use a tech21 case that has a slimmer profile than some others.

I haven't used a case since my iPhone 4. I have gotten scratches and minor marks from dropping my caseless iPhone 7 and 11 Pro, but fortunately never cracked the screen. One of my iPads on the other hand, did not survive a drop. It had an Apple cover, but those weren't designed to withstand a drop. Isn't the glass on the new one supposed to be even stronger?

No. No they dont!

Ive never dropped mine. Not ever. I dont see how its possible as an adult with average motor skills to have something gripped in your hand and then to suddenly release enough pressure to let it fall to the floor!

My phone lives in my pocket.. comes out for use, then goes straight back in the pocket - I wouldn't drop it whilst actively using it, and it wouldn't drop out of my pocket...

So Im the opposite of you.... I dont find it hard to believe that people drop them... they do that all the time... but I do wonder how this can happen and why people dont pay more attention to the £1000 piece of hardware they are handing and dont let go!

The woman I picked up my phones from this morning informed me that there are now two claims for physical damage per year instead of over the 24 month period, which makes the increase in cost a little more tolerable, I guess, but also makes me not feel quite as bad about going without a screen protector.

So if you’re going case-less I suppose you’d also have some additional peace of mind there.

Juts put a protector on my 12 and it’s really discreet - practically can’t tell it’s there. I’m waiting on a rear protector and that combo might be my alternative to a case. Even clear cases are quite bulky so not ideal.

but I’m wfh at the moment so I might change my mind when I’m back in the office, and use a case when out and about just in case

my next question is gambling with no AppleCare or not?

Case free on the 11 pro, not a single scratch in the back it looks brand new. screen is scratched but nothing deep, and the Bezel looks almost new. I have been super impressed how well it’s held up. I don’t baby it at all. With Apple care, I’m case free unless it’s too slippery to hold.
