1. Most cases do not protect against scratches and breakage.
2. Most cases are ugly and carry bacteria.
3. Modern phones made out of glass front and back are just stupid.
4. This is a religious question.

1/2 of you will not leave the store without case and protectors

The other 1/2 of us keep it in the same empty pocket, suffer occasional hiccups, but like the beauty of a $800 consumable device over a $40 eye sore.

Yes I’m biased. I don’t use one.

Don’t use plastic covers on my sofa either. Which is more fragile and expensive.

I compromise. When the phone is in my pocket it is in a slip case. I’ve only ever dropped my iPhone putting it in or taking it out of my pocket. The slip case also protects it from damage from my pocket or contents. When I’m at a desk or home, the iPhone is caseless.

I think Apple is creating a “pouch” this year so I might look into that. Right now I’m using my iPhone 11 Pro slip case with my new iPhone 12 Pro. It is slightly too small but it should be good enough for the time being.

Juts put a protector on my 12 and it’s really discreet - practically can’t tell it’s there. I’m waiting on a rear protector and that combo might be my alternative to a case. Even clear cases are quite bulky so not ideal.

but I’m wfh at the moment so I might change my mind when I’m back in the office, and use a case when out and about just in case

my next question is gambling with no AppleCare or not?

What rear protector are you going to use?

No offense but I find that hard to believe. Everyone eventually drops their phone and probably more than once.

I theorize that people that use cases drop their phones more frequently because they have cases. As if there's some subconscious part of their brain that knows their phone is a little more protected and therefore they're not as careful with it. I don't let go of my phone unintentionally, no. There's some part of my brain that's always aware when I'm putting out, when I'm putting it back. I never let it sit unattended, I never set it on something where it could potentially slip, or be knocked, and fall. If I'm around other people, and especially if it's a crowded situation (remember those?) I consciously apply a more firm and stable grip on the phone so that when I get bumped or jostled, the phone doesn't leave my hand. I also don't bring it out in extremely risky situations (mosh pits, etc). I don't drink, so I'm never using my phone while in a compromised state.

I also never drop a sandwich I'm eating, and I've eaten thousands of sandwiches in my time. Likewise, no, I've not dropped my phone though, as I mentioned above, I did let one go into the laundry by violating my own rules. A case wouldn't have made a difference there.

ps. Yes, I'm aware that the day may come that I drop my phone. And that drop very well might cause damage. But, I always have AppleCare+, so it won't be catastrophic if that happens. And if I drop and damage one phone every 10 or so years, I'm good with that. In the mean time I'm holding and seeing my phone instead of a $30 piece of plastic every hour of every day of every year. Yes, there are compromises/cautions I have to take that many people don't care to, and that's totally legitimate (we all deal with our stuff the way that makes us the happiest) but those of us that really want to go case-less and really want our phones in pristine condition are able to do that. :)

I’ll try it with the 12 Pro Max. But I also just ordered a Pitaka Air case. It’s 10 grams and adds grip. Most likely will just use that.

What rear protector are you going to use?

bought the first one I could find on amazon - Gamee or something. Its on now. Its glass and a little slippery so I’ll keep any eye out for a film one which should provide more grip. and its only part coverage which isn’t ideal but its on the back so I can live with it for a while. Rear gets a lot less attention than front so I’m not realistically expecting any big makers to support but I hold out hope for decent full coverage to be neater - but this is ok for now.

I've never used a screen protector or case for any iPhone, and I've owned every single iPhone except one (8 maybe, I can't remember). It boggles the mind why anyone cares about the design of the iPhone if you're going to slap some ugly piece of plastic around the phone that's going to add to it's thickness and hide the beauty of the design.

Putting a case on a phone is the modern day equivilant of keeping plastic on your sofa. Would you go buy a beautiful new Porsche and then place bumper foam all around it also? I don't want to live like that.

Edit: If you're so insistent on a case, why not just demand that Apple stop using metal and glass and instead build the phone out of plastic or rubber? Why not just get an ugly thick iPhone to start with that's built to withstand whatever you're all doing with your phones anyway so out of the box it's the way you want it and you don't have to buy additional covers for it?

I been carrying all mt phones case free for sometime now. I put temper glass protectors on both sides and call it a day! I keep it separate in my front pocket of my jeans or in the inside pocket of my jacket. With a case, it much more bulky and harder to take out of the pocket for me. Plus, I like the look of the iPhone bare!

I have never had luck finding a good back glass protector. What brand do you typically use?

Xreme Skins makes a rear and side film for the iPhone 12. They have an option of choosing a different finish on the rear and sides. So you can choose clear glossy for the back and matte clear for the sides to match the look of the naked iPhone 12. I think I am going to try them for my iPhone 12 Pro Max and order clear matte back and clear glossy sides. They are located in the UK. The film is reasonably price and their shipping charges seem reasonable to the US.
