Three years ago I almost bought an M2 15" MacBook Air. I saw it in the Apple Store in midnight and loved how it looked. But, I decided to keep using my M1.

Now, however, I'm looking to upgrade to the M5.
My M1 is in gold and I'm tired of the color. Thinking about getting Midnight for the M5, but was wondering if that was a color that any of you have gotten tired of yet. Second best option is starlight, but I figured I'd go for a color completely not related to Gold.

My favourite MBA colour is Starlight. After years of silver, it's just that bit different and I think it looks 'warm' as opposed to the silver and blue.

I never touch my tech while touching food, and I wash my hands a lot, so I generally do not have a problem with oils. My keyboard has kept most of its matte finish, which I'm aware gets eaten away by oils. Have not had a dark laptop ever since my 2017 MBP, and thought that was a gorgeous computer, so I want something dark again.

My iPad Air is in almost the same shade of blue as a Sky Blue MBA, so don't think I'll opt for that.

I have a number of silver Apple products, including my Mac mini, Studio Display, and some old Macs and iPods I collect, so silver would not look as fresh to me.

I still like starlight, but like midnight more.

Still like my Midnight blue M3! I keep it in a hard shell case and use a removable keyboard cover when open, so it's still fairly pristine.

I have the 15" Midnight M5 and instantly placed a Midnight Clear ultra thin case with keyboard and screen protector on it.
No worries of finger prints and it protects the M5 great.

I’m tired of all the dark colors because I dislike the greasy look of oils and silver is the only way.
I have space black MacBook Pro (all my other MacBooks have been raw aluminium as Steve intended), and yes, whilst it is cool, and I really should clean it, there's a lot to be said for the elegance and forever fresh look of the traditional bare aluminium.

Can I ask you ... do you not find those tabs on the front edge of the case to be bothersome when using the trackpad?

I briefly had an M4 15" MBA in a Mosiso case like that and it really bothered me as how/where I rest my hands when using the trackpad hit right on the plastic tabs.

As soon as I used it for 2 minutes I knew it wouldn't work for me long term.

Not I. The tabs you mention have a very slight lip at the edges of each corner. My hands rest each side of the trackpad and no not make contact with the covers lips you mention.
when I run my fingers over these tabs they feel sculptured at each end; as such my hand glides over them.

I follow a simple procedure. I evaluate each year's colors when Apple first announces them. Then I check them again in YT and written reviews. Then I view them in person once they're in stock at my local Apple Store. I consider factors like how they'd match my preferred clothes; how they'll show fingerprints; how each color will fit in with whatever's considered fashionable in a couple of years.

Then I buy the damn silver model.

I've just gone back to midnight for the first time in a while for a new MacBook Air although I've put the dbrand 1984 retro skin on it.

I never considered Midnight but rather Space Grey. I initially bought Silver with my mid 2009 MBP and, seeing how there was hardly any wear, did get the 2023 M2 MBP as Silver again. Boring I know but things like resale and chipped paint was part of the decision as I keep my devices a very very long time.

Afterthought: Back when I bought the M2, I was also due to replacing the OG SE (Silver) iP. Went in to buy a 13 Mini that was only available as Midnight in the darker colour but hated it. I would have easily bought a conservative, traditional black but alas it wasn't an option. I did immediately fall in love with the distant and fresh Blue available at the time.

I loved space gray. I have a midnight MBA. It does show fingerprints. Drives me crazy. Easy to wipe off, but requires constant wiping. Wish I had gone with silver instead.

I had a midnight M2 for a while (original before they allegedly made it more fingerprint proof). Bad choice, it just doesn’t look as nice as any other color after even minor use. I would not recommend to anyone. Any colorway on any Mac laptop looks better to me. I am partial to both starlight and sky blue. Silver is also classic and excellent.

No. Fine with it. Silver is just so ordinary for me and the black still looks fine. Silver is definitely more practical as it does not show the marks but the machine is still marked and just because you cannot see the marks, does not mean they are not still there. I have a Burton Goods leather case on the machine and the black keyboard deck looks fine and I have little problem keeping it clean.

Go with what you like and live with what it takes to keep it that way.

I have an M2 Midnight 15" MBA which I bought 2.5 years ago and still think it's lovely. This thing is built like a tank and rumors that it is a fingerprint magnet are overstated.

The one thing I generally advise people on when it comes to MacBook Air and MacBook Pro color options: the paint is inevitably going to chip around the edges of whichever port you use for charging. It is inevitable. This ought to not be super drastic, but you will still eventually have it happen and it will become more noticeable as time goes on.

The color of the given MacBook underneath this paint is the silver color option. If you get the silver color, there will be nothing to notice.

That said, I'd imagine that this is significantly more prevalent/noticeable on the darker colors (Midnight, Space Gray, Space Black, etc.) than the lighter ones (Sky Blue, Starlight, etc.).

Personally, the silver color feels very...classic to me...dating all the way back to the first aluminum PowerBook G4s. But I do like this added benefit as well.
