Just thought I'd post back and say I FREAKIN LOVE THIS THING.

Tried it with Final Cut Pro and it's a dream.

a) No lag at all in FCP. Tried a Wacom bamboo touch in the past and it choked in FCP.

b) Scrolling FCP timeline is fast and intuitive. Two fingers to scroll back and forth, pinch to zoom in/out.

c) The trackpad allows me to scrub video in the Canvas. This feels so much more natural than JKL (though I'm not knocking JKL, it's brilliant, but different)

d) I can also scrub in QuickTime Player (I'm using the old Pro player in SL).

I love that it's so small, too. Doesn't steal much desk real-estate. Yet to try it on the left side of my keyboard, so I can keep my pen or mouse in the right.

Hope that helps anyone who works with FCP. I'm impressed. Can't wait to try it in PhotoShop. :)

If you haven't tried it yet, load up BetterTouchTool (I think that's the name of it) and add more gestures to your MTP for even more control!

That's a great idea. The possibilities look endless with that installed. Does it allow you to do application-specific commands or just global?

Expert Trackball & Magic Trackpad

Well, I just received my Magic Trackpad to add to my Expert trackball. Initially the MT was jerking all over the screen. Read a fix on MacFixIt. I had to delete USB Overdrive, which now limits the use of that device, and reset the PRAM. Once I did that, the trackpad worked as designed. Now how can I get back my full function of my 64 bit trackball?

For those of you experiencing track pad, mouse lag;
Change the Wifi channel on your airport.

Ta da!

I'm guessing the trackball doesn't have its own driver, or the stock driver isn't very good?

Problems with 2006 Mac Pro 1,1

Ever since I did the system update for the Magic Trackpad and started using one, I have had problems with maintaining bluetooth connections with other devices. I am running 10.6.4 and using a Zoom Bluetooth USB Model 4322 bluetooth connector - which worked flawlessly before. Every reboot, I loose my Logitech Dinovo Edge bluetooth keyboard and usually also the Magic Trackpad, forcing me to re-install each device. Simply reconnecting does not work.

When I am using the Trackpad, it works OK, with the occasional lag when I start to move the cursor.

Works wonderfully with the Early 2008 Mac Pro.
p.s. finally, bluetooth has some use for me ... ;)

Issues

Now my Magic Trackpad is skipping all over the screen on my Mac Pro... Why? I have to continue using my Kensington Expert Mouse... Would be nice if it just worked. My WiFi is on N speeds, so would that really interfere?

I bought one yesterday... it works great on my 2009 Quad, combined with a 2007 wireless keyboard and a Mighty Mouse. No lags what so ever.... and I've barely touched the mouse since.

As for how the device works with the apps in general... wonderful. Inertial scrolling in OS X is IMO a bit choppy, and gestures are bit limited - specially given the size of the trackpad.... soooo...

  • Smart Scroll is a great app for controlling the scrolling inertia and other extra functions for $19... totally worth it.
  • BetterTouchTool helps enhance the trackpad with almost unlimited custom gestures and a lot of other features... BTT is free, and really great.

With these two extra apps, the trackpad is just amazing.

Hope this is helpful,

cheers!

I love it; let me use my left hand for mousing duties (normally not possible with a mouse) while my right hand is busy.

It has replaced the trackball I used to use.

... the trackpad is just amazing.

EDIT:

Not too happy about it.... Since I got it I noticed it wobbles (not all 4 sides sit evenly on the table, so one of the bottom sides wobbles when using it). I was hoping that a couple of day's use would "settle" or balance it, but no. The distance that one of the rubber feet rises from the desk is about half a millimeter, but it makes it really annoying when using it - every time I tap on it, it makes a clacking sound. To minimize this I've stacked 4 small pieces of paper and place them under the wobbling side, but this makes clicking difficult...

Anyone else has this problem?

On top of this, the authorized reseller I bought if from says this is just an aesthetic defect, not covered under warranty... but if I insisted, it'll take between 2-3 weeks to deal with it: diagnose it, ask for apple's opinion, get the spare parts and repair it...

In the past I've had good experience with AppleCare, but this is ridiculous...

I was skeptical and actually laughed at the idea over a mouse. After having it for a week I love it. No wobbling and I have an antique Indonesian desk with an uneven top, no problems...

...and what third party did you buy it from? Why not directly from Apple? They have great customer service. I've been with Apple for over a decade, they even replaced a part that was out of AppleCare for free, three YEARS after AppleCare...

There are no Apple Stores here... buying it from the Apple Online Store took about 2 weeks for delivery... the official reseller had only one in stock, so I got it from them.

AppleCare rep said each reseller is entitled to their own "replace or repair criteria", and there's nothing they can do about it: if the reseller decides to repair it instead of replacing it, and it takes that long, I have to take it, or find another authorized service provider

Somehow I've got the feeling the reseller is trying to discourage any actions to avoid replacing it, or force the repair process to collect money from Apple for doing so... IMO attempting to repair this thing for such physical defect is crazy, not to mention their expectation of me waiting 3 weeks for it.

Anyway...

I replied to your double-post here:

Just wondering if it suffers the same lag problems many people are reporting with the Magic Mouse (when used with a MP).

I think this would be amazing to use with Final Cut Pro, but not if there's a lag.
Why would it be amazing to use the trackpad with FC Pro? I don't get it

Well, my Trackpad still does NOT work with Mac Pro the way it was designed... Still jerks all over the screen...

I spent some time on the phone with Apple support... They sent me an application that gathers data off my Mac... I then sent them that info... After reviewing the data, they said to just wait for a future software update... Should be coming out soon is all they would say...
