Huuuuge advantage. Especially here in San Francisco. They're very common and practically every gay dude in SF owns an iphone.

People see my N1 and go what kind of phone is that?
LOL

I was in SF for Fourth of July, and that is so true. iPhones everywhere. I saw plenty of iPhone 4's just by the bumper. The only time I ever saw a Nexus One in person was at the SF airport when I was heading back to LA. Hey, that could have been you!

If I had a second phone, I really would like it to be more obscure. I don't always want a phone everyone has. Nexus One has that underground following appeal.

In my honest opinion I prefer a blackberry for work. My iPhone 4 is for play.

I have played with some blackberries but I honestly have yet to find one I like. the good news is I can swap phones through Wirefly with no restocking fee so if I don't like the Driod X I can try others. What Blackberry do you use?

I use the blackberry tour. I find it easier to bang out emails on a blackberry. I think that's why I prefer it.

My girlfriend (or whatever she is) has a droid X. I can't see myself using it for work. The blackberry is simple and to the point. Perfect for work tasks IMO.

You *told* your wife she was gettin an android? I'd have snapped at you too lol

To be honest, she lost her iPhone. She didn't want to pay up for a new one, so I got this one for 149.00 with a new contract, plus I get $100 off from my Dreyer's discount. I wanted to see if the grass is greener on the other side. It's a chance for me to test drive the Andy

Setup my Droid X, running 2.1 update 1, this evening. I like it. It is a nice phone. I like the big screen and features. It is not as polished as my iPhone 4 but it is on Verizon and this is the key factor.

I honestly think that anyone claiming this phone and OS suck are totally deluded. It does not suck in the least but it is not quite as polished as iOS.

What I have noticed, not that there aren't plenty of reviews out there.
  • Screen is big on the X which is a plus.
  • Like the customization on the X.
  • Scrolling is a little choppy but not lagging, just not as smooth as the 4.
  • Camera and Video are about on par.
  • Notifications are a whole lot better on the X.
  • Weird getting used to buttons again.
  • Call quality is better, speaker phone is louder, and earpiece sounds richer on the X.
  • Droid is more difficult to sync but not terrible.
  • Led is supper bright on the X.
  • Droid X is noticeably lighter.
  • Browser speed is within milliseconds of each other on my wifi test.
  • iPhone 4's screen is nicer, not by a lot but it is slightly noticeable
  • Don't like that you have to put the Droid in different USB modes.

That's it for now. I'll be happy to answer any questions if anyone has any. I wonder how the iPhone 4 feels about taking pics of the Droid... lol

Cool. Can you take pictures with them next to each other with both having lockscreens shown or something to see the displays and size?

Sorry my friend, I don't have a 3rd camera as I am out of town. Just Droid and 4 so that won't work. I ripped these off the net and it is pretty accurate. I would say it is more noticeable in person.

Tell you one thing. By using the same speed test app between the Droid and the iPhone 4 Verizon is getting its ass kicked in regards to data speed. Go AT&T!

Yeah I notice that too. But you'll see that AT&T speeds spike while verizon is consistent.

Rumor has it that the Droid will recieve a firmware update (froyo 2.2) as soon as next week to even better your experience. flash support, faster web pages....

Verizon splits data and voice on their system. They restrict data to a certain volume throttling down individuals as data demands increase. They do not let data bump voice like AT&T. That is one reason they have fewer dropped calls (not the only one). On AT&T you get faster speeds, but if enough people are using data it will cause calls to drop.

In our office we have run multiple speed tests between AT&T and Verizon. With the exception of the cap that the ip4 was encountering, AT&T was signficantly faster. That said, AT&T also had far more dropped calls and call fails.

Thanks for sharing, I am already seeing this. Arrived in Atlanta last night and setup/ played with the phone. Did some speed test and AT&T was twice as fast over 3G. Arrived in Sacramento, CA this morning and experienced the same data speed difference but dropped 4 calls this afternoon and could not get a connection back to my wife in PR for 6 attempts. Imagine having the data of AT&T but the call quality of Verizon...

Even with the Droid X running 2.1 webpage rendering is not slow on Verizon's speed. Still getting used to the phone. Droid is the best besides iOS but they have a some polishing to do. We'll see how Froyo helps out.

Froyo made a big difference on my Nexus One, programs loaded faster, keyboard response time was much improved. Didn't see much difference on loading web pages though. I had done speedtests before and after Froyo was loaded, and didn't see much difference in speeds.

From what has been reported the Droid X is being used more to access the internet than the iphone. If this is true and the trend continues, it will be interesting to see how Verizon's network holds up to the load. Til now they haven't been tested.

I also have an iPhone 4 and a Motorol Droid (running a 3 week old build of Froyo 2.2).

The main plus the Droid has is Verizon. Voice service is way more reliable. I prefer the iPhone - much more smooth, reliable (OS wise) and has better mainstream app support.

I compare the differences like pitting OS X against Linux. Linux has some advantages, but spit and polish usually isn't one of them.

If the iPhone isn't an option, Android is the next best option.

Returned the Droid

So just an update to the saga...

I decided to return the Droid X to Verizon and cancel out of the service for now. Main reason is that Verizon's data network is lagging behind AT&T's by as much as 500%.

I used the phone in Atlanta, GA and Sacramento, CA over the course of a week business trip. The overall data connection was stable but slow, much slower then my iPhone 4 using the same app to test data speeds.

Wifi was also significantly slower in my own personal test. Same router, same speed test app.

The call quality is nice on Verizon, you can tell the difference but until they roll out their LTE networks I think I am going to just stick with one phone.

As far as the Droid X goes, it is a nice phone but not nice enough. The whole 'experience' of Droid is choppy compared to iOS and frustrating at times. The back button is annoying as I found myself always looking to the top left corner to accomplish this rather then a physical button. GPS took much longer to lock on, apps are hit or miss and unpolished as well as the whole operating system.

I see a lot of potential and the hardware is there they just need to spend time making the whole feel of the Droid OS more enjoyable. Well, at least this is my opinion.
