In Europe, if you pay full price for the iPhone your monthly bill will be greatly reduced because you can chose an un-subsidised SIM only contract (starting from around £10/$16 per month). Taking out finance with a low interest rate to pay off your handset could actually work out cheaper than signing up to a subsidised contract.

That would be nice to see here in the US. But with the way it works here buying outright is simply overpaying by $450. There is zero difference in rate plans based on how you choose to pay for your phone. I'd love to have the option of paying full price up front for a reduced monthly bill like you have in Europe.

So sad to see people borrow money for a phone.

Sad.

By the way, good luck with your processing.

so sad to see people be so judgmental

It is indeed, wow.

either of you do not know the situation?

for all you know he has the cash and want to just build his credit.

Hmm. I'm curious, how much does the OP spend on basic necessities per month? I'm not asking him, I'm asking you, because you must have all of his paychecks and bills in front of you to be making a judgment like that.

Don't get me wrong, financing an expensive device when you don't have the money for more important things is indeed irresponsible. But we don't know the OP's situation! What if he is financially sound but prefers to spread out his larger purchases over a period of several months? There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. In any case, we don't know, and don't need to know.

It would be different if he made a remark like, "I'm not eating this month but it will so be worth it!" You know, stuff like that. But he didn't, so you might as well drop it.

Like high school?

You are forgetting the average age of these forum members. People who are talking about camping out in front of the store must not have jobs and be supporting a family, but it is sad as some do! I remember being more intense about such things but responsibility ruined it!

How on earth does lining up on launch day automatically cause someone to fall behind on their family or responsibilities? I mean, unless I missed the memo and the definition of a "responsible" person is one that works on Friday mornings. I suppose nobody goes into work later, right? I suppose nobody is self employed and makes their own hours? I suppose college students all have class at the same time on Friday mornings?

I could go on and on, but I don't need to. Look, I know there will be plenty of people skipping work and school to camp out. I agree with you, that is irresponsible to some degree. But not everybody is camping out at the expense of themselves or their loved ones! I'm not going to be doing it, but I can certainly respect those that do.

I use my Amex for everything I buy, builds my credit, gives me rewards. I pay it up as soon as my bill comes and don't pay any interest. I am the credit cards companies worst customer because I do not pay them interest and I reap all the card rewards.

That just makes you a smart buyer :)

Agreed.

Camping out anywhere sounds nice, especially with two small kids at home. Responsibility sucks sometimes..LOL!

why would you say that? if that guy doesn't have any credit, using barclay credit card with no interest in the first 6 months is a good way to build credit. you don't know that guys situation to judge him.

So sad to see people take the smallest of opportunities to judge people.

Really... What a jerk. LOL. I've used apple to finance a macbook pro before and it was a great choice 0% interest for 12 months rather spend their money all at once than mine :]

I think everyone is entitled to make an irresponsible financial decision every once in a while, we all do it, well a good majority anyway. We could have benefited from saving the money that I spent on my iPhone 5, but I bought it anyway. Sure it didn't break the bank or HURT us financially, but the money in savings would've been nice.

I'll never understand why people are so judgmental. Not just here, I see it on forums everywhere. If someone wants to go hungry for a month so they can buy a new phone, be my guest, it's really not my business anyway.

I finance almost all my apple purchases. Almost as in iPhone and Macs. Why? Because its a great way to build credit since no interest builds up for 6-12 months. As a result of this, I spread the payments out and pay it in full before interest builds up.

I'm single, have no family, and will camp out Friday. Yay.

Thanks for your responses (the positive ones anyways) everyone! I was getting pretty paranoid at the thought of receiving the iphone in like mid-October, but I'm glad to know financing shouldn't bump me to that extent. As for the reason behind using financing...

Pretty much this :) Had I known that people who use their credit card get faster order status updates then I probably would have gone that route.
