Besides when flying, I started using ear plugs at home when my wife snored. She now wears a mask, but runs a fan on her nightstand, plus as a rule she goes to bed later than I do, so I still use ear plugs.

I became familiar with Laser Lite (Honeywell) at work, and still use them today. They are rated at a 33Db sound reduction and last a couple weeks before they become ineffective and are available for purchase at Amazon.

What kind do you use?

For the past six years I‘ve listened to YouTube documentaries using earbuds at night. It’s likely unhealthy, but that’s me.

I only use them when traveling, but the Mack's earplugs are fairly comfortable to sleep in. At home I sleep near a fan, and I have a Sound + Sleep machine that plays rain/cricket noises.

I just run a fan at night for the noise it makes. It helps cover up any apartment building noises, cats running around playing and whatnot.

I use them every night for years. I started using them for a noisy environment when sleeping but think I am now 'addicted' to them because I find it hard to fall asleep without them. I use 'Quiet Time' foam ear plugs from WalMart. They have a NRR rating of 33 decibels and they work the best out of any I've tried. They appear to have about the same size/shape as the OPs picture.

My building has a noisy fan/ventilation system which comes on at night and makes an annoying humming noise. It's not loud enough to wake me up if I'm already asleep, but if it comes on when I'm trying to get to sleep, or I wake up during the night, it's really irritating and I struggle to get to sleep.

I don't really like earplugs, or "plug-style" earphones, but my Sony noise-cancelling headphones are great for blocking out this noise and letting me get to sleep. Silence! The only problem is that I usually prefer to sleep on my side - uncomfortable and problematic when wearing bulky headphones!

The dream for me is to find either very flat headphones or AirPod-style earbuds that have noise cancellation and allow me to side-sleep.

I use the same ones as you, Huntn. They help when noises are distracting me from taking a nap or hitting the sack for the night when something is going on outside or in the main part of the house.

I use them while mowing the lawn too!

I need distraction noise, so we typically run the TV on a some kind of sound stream, like a 10 hour YT video of "Thunderstorm" :D

I have several Nature Company CDs that we (wife and I) used to listen to regularly (think 20 years ago) at bed time, Gentle Ocean, Distant Thunder, Tropical Jungle. I need to break those out. :) I also have nature sound apps on my iPad, but I’ve never used them. 🙃

My wife frequently goes to sleep with the TV on as background noise.

When traveling, staying in a hotel, the ac background noise was a must, but having an irregular ac was the worst! :)

It’s not that I am addicted, I’ve just noticed that without them, I am awakened easily.

I’ve never been a fan of the hard plastic Apple earbuds, as I find them to be uncomfortable. I much prefer the inexpensive ear buds made with soft plastic.

Thanks! For outside if needed, I have large earmuff style headpiece.

I also put on Netflix with a sleep timer when I go to bed, to aid in getting to sleep. 99% of the time, it's Star Trek TOS. Though, as you saw yesterday, it was a movie, Fight Club that I put on as I laid down.

Nope..... when I am ready to sleep, I sleep.... and have slept in some fairly noisy places.
This is one advantage I have over my wife, when I lay down to sleep, my mind disengages in moments/minutes and I start drifting. My wife on the other hand (61 years old) has problems calming her mind, she has a lot of things running through her brain and has trouble turning it off.

I spent years drifting off to STNG, two episodes every night, 10pm-12am. Sometimes I was aggravated if I did not make it to the end :D

I have the opposite experience with the Air Pods. I was skeptical about them at first, but I bought them anyway. I was pleasantly surprised that I found them to be comfortable to my ears. All the other earbuds from Apple I find very, very uncomfortable.

Though, I don't lay down or go to sleep with the Air Pods, or anything in my ears.

I’m actually the opposite I need noise to fall asleep. If it’s quiet I am unable to.

i have a fan that is set on medium. Ac on 65 running all night and a machine that sounds sort of like sitting In an airplane

works good

I use these exact ones every night. Recently bought a box of 200 pair from Amazon. They work very well and don’t leave my ears feeling sore after using them all night. That was my experience with a brand I tried from the local pharmacy, so I gave the Laser Lite a try and couldn’t be happier! I use one pair for about a couple weeks before swapping them out. I have found my go to earplugs.

I need to get white noise machines to cover up years of constant dog barking & whining. If it was an hour or so, no big deal, but it starts and stops at all hours, so no ear plugs or my fans seem to work.

The only thing that does work for a week or two is screaming at the neighbors that the constant dog noise is a violation of the town noise disturbance code. Needless to say, my patience with dogs is at an epic low.

So white noise machine it is...

To answer the question, I use Mack earplugs during the day to cut out the frigid air conditioning so my sinuses do not flare up.

I use earmuffs. For a few reasons.
  • I hate the idea of throwing out used plugs every day. Just seems wasteful. They probably take a long time to break down. I produce enough trash already. Which I'd love to reduce if practical.
  • Concerns about increased risk of ear infection using plugs.
  • Reusable plugs just seem gross.
  • Sometimes they hurt.
  • Either they fall out or I take them out when sleeping. Making putting them back in, in a dark room, a pain. If I wake up.

There are a few downsides.
  • They come off often when sleeping.
  • Ear sweat on a hot night.
  • Takes a while to get used to.
  • Side sleeping is impossible.

I don't need them as much as I used to. Usually I can sleep without them. I mostly just use them now if there is excessive noise or I wake up in the middle of the night.
