Anyone who has 5 upgrading to 5s after just 1 year?

I'll be buying on day one for sure. I bought my 5 sim free last year since my upgrade wasn't due, and sold my then quite new HTC One S for £300. When I did upgrade a few months back though I had a free Galaxy S4 that I sold for near full retail price, so my 5S is practically paid for.

I figure I'll grab this years model and pass my 5 to my girlfriend, and likely stick with the 5S for 2 years. It seems like a future-proof enough device to last me until 2015.

I'm upgrading solely because I have a 16GB and want a 32 instead. I would buy a 32 GB if the option was still available but since it's not I'm getting the 32GB 5S. Not super excited about it either. More excited about iOS7 then the device itself.

I have had every iPhone on launch, and I still have them all. This year will be no different, although the past 2 years, I decided to buy unlocked, and take a 1 month rolling contract at £15/month. So now, no need to worry about contracts, and I get Unlimited Data inc. tethering.

Not true. If you have an AT&T (or other) account you can do a device only upgrade to get an unlocked phone at Apple or at the AT&T store. No problem. Did it last year.

Also the early upgrade adds $250 to the cost each year if you keep renewing your contract. It's cheaper to pay full price every other year (adds $450). Also you are not constantly locked into a 2 year contract. It's easier to get out.

So this doesn't extend your contract? Also can you do this on release day?

Bought the 5 last year as an early upgrade and renewed my contract for another 2 years until 10/2014. It was not my smartest decision. This year I will sell my 5 on eBay, buy the 5s unlocked and then possibly cancel ATT and just pay the ETF. ETF will be $205 but since I only paid $450 for it last year, it is almost the same thing as if I had not extended my contract and bought at full retail last year.

Now I need to decide which plan to get on T-Mobile. My 5 is unlocked so I have been testing T-Mo for the past few months for a few days at a time and their LTE coverage and data speeds are excellent in the Boston area. I could do the $30/Mo plan with 100 voice minutes and 5GB of LTE data or just get Unlimited w/ no throttling for $70. Decisions, decisions! I am leaning towards the $30 plan since it will save me about $50 a month and I never use my phone minutes. I have never used more than 60 min per month, haha. and only once have I used over 5GB of data.

No idea of upgrade prices here in Ireland yet, in fact they usually dont release pricing till launch day. Doesnt matter, I've had them all and the gold one looks gorgeous. Ive three daughters all grown up, so theres always someone waiting for my leftovers. Thats the eldest this year, she'll get my 5 and pass her 4 on to the youngest one so all happy

I have a dummy line I pay $10 a month for. I use my upgrade one year then use that dummy lines upgrade and do a swap the next year. Saves you tons of cash. Att next is a joke and a waste of money.

I'm upgrading either with an early upgrade or at full retail.

I've noticed the date I am eligible for an early upgrade is different depending on where I check. If I check with the Apple Store app, i'm eligible on September 15th which would be great since the 5S becomes available the 20th. But if I check on Apple.com, I'm eligible on October 15th. Checking with AT&T doesn't even say anything about an early upgrade, just that I am available for a full upgrade on 9/15/2014.

Anyone else getting the same results?

I posted on another thread about this, but I think what I'll be doing is canceling with Verizon and switching to AT&T. I bought my 5 with Verizon last year and after only one year on my contract I am only able to get the 5S by paying the full price for the phone. So if I go 16GB that will be $649. However, my ETF is currently at $240. So if I pay that and switch to AT&T and pay $200 for the phone I'm saving $209. Kind of a pain, but if the service in my area is the same and I get my company's discount on my service it's well worth it to save that $209.

Used my wife's upgrade to get the 5, using my upgrade to get the 5S. She gets my 5 and I sell her 4S on eBay. :D

I'm in the exact same situation. It's nice having a wife who's happy with getting my old phone every year.

I'll be calling AT&T on the 20th and getting a subsidized upgrade for myself and my dad, as we've done for the past 2 years. Takes some doing and quite a bit of effort but it's worth it.

I have a 32 GB white AT&T iPhone 5 and I plan on getting a silver iPhone 5S 32 GB. To do so, I will be buying the 5S at full price ($749) so I don't extend my contract and I get it unlocked.

As far as my iPhone 5 goes, I am shopping around trade in sites as well as considering selling my iPhone 5 privately. The least I would want is $340-350 for the phone, but I'm preferably asking $400 (The phone is in good shape, slight scratches from wear and tear on aluminum but glass is pristine). Doing this will give me an unlocked 5S around the price of an early upgrade.

I'd like to upgrade but im not quite sure how I would. I have Verizon and my upgrade isn't until next year so idk what I would do. Could I try and sell the phone on eBay or Craigslist or something and make money for it and buy a full retail Verizon iPhone 5S if they even do that? I don't know.

You will have to buy the phone at full retail price. It's $649, $749, and $849 for 16GB, 32GB and 64GB respectively.

Then they swap the SIM card into the 5S, and then you can sell your iPhone 5 wherever.

I get the same exact results. I am not sure what to think. I would like to go to the Apple Store on September 20, but I'm not sure I want to pay full price.

I'm thinking about doing the same. I was going to trade my iPhone with Apple's exchange program and pay the rest to get the 5s.

I'm just curious what the price of the 5s will be for partial upgrades. I know you mentioned $450 but I've read conflicting things.

Here is a screenshot from the Apple Store app, checking my availability: (Early upgrade is priced as it was with the 5)

This is definitely considerable product for upgrading with some features, such as finger print, slow mo and some camera improvement. However, it does not offer any camera upgrade so far, except slow mo feature. Also it still has same size with iPhone 5, which I have. Also I expected them to announce 32 gb iPhone as minimum storage. I'll definitely wait for 6.

I am, but in a different way. My wife and I are staggered one year, so each year one of us is upgrade eligible. I'll get the 5s, she will get my 5, and we will sell the 4s. It doesn't really matter if the changes are huge or upgrade worthy, as we have always sold the lower phone for more than the contract price (and since I pay the same to at&t under contract or not, why not?) of the new phone. It works great for us and I think skipping an upgrade would cost us. This year technically she gets the upgrade, but we will just swap sim cards and I'll get the new one as always (not a sexist thing, if she were a gadget or tech nerd I'm sure we would alternate, but shes okay with letting me always take the new one).

Wow, you guys must either be serious Apple fanboys or serious smartphone fanboys. I could never handle the same phone over and over.

My smartphone history has been:

iPhone 3g
iPhone 4
Samsung Droid Charge (Yeah big mistake lol)
iPhone 4s
Samsung Galaxy S3
Htc One (Current)

The only difference with the iphone4 and the 4s was a faster processor and a robot that you said stupid stuff to for a while. Amusing for a few days and then you forget siri (Although I must say, the two iphones walk into a bar joke was hilarious).

The S3 and the HTC One are both refreshing changes, esp given the fact that they add their own modifications to android. You people must all wear the same clothes and drive the same cars

Yeah, I will. I think the sensor is reason enough...at least for convenience.

But, I am also looking forward to next Nexus installment, which is probably just weeks away.

I will be upgrading - have an upgrade every year might as well get the newest and make money on the old one.
