I would resell your 5 and buy the 5s at full retail. That way, your contract doesn't start over and then next year you can get the 6 at the fully subsidized price. This strategy seems to work out to be the cheapest if you want to upgrade every year.
Also, I may be mistaken, but I thought if you take an early upgrade with AT&T you can't do it again for at least another 18 months or maybe the full 2 years even, but I don't remember for sure.
Wow, you guys must either be serious Apple fanboys or serious smartphone fanboys. I could never handle the same phone over and over.
My smartphone history has been:
iPhone 3g
iPhone 4
Samsung Droid Charge (Yeah big mistake lol)
iPhone 4s
Samsung Galaxy S3
Htc One (Current)
The only difference with the iphone4 and the 4s was a faster processor and a robot that you said stupid stuff to for a while. Amusing for a few days and then you forget siri (Although I must say, the two iphones walk into a bar joke was hilarious).
The S3 and the HTC One are both refreshing changes, esp given the fact that they add their own modifications to android. You people must all wear the same clothes and drive the same cars![]()
Put your mom on your family plan, that's how I do it. They never want the newest phone.![]()
If I do manage to get $450 for it on eBay (since its still pretty good condition), that will be enough to cover the cost. Only downside is, my contract would be renewed to a new 2-year only after 1 year.
So by adding another line would get someone the 5s for an additional $10 per month ( on top of regular monthly charges)?. I thought one had to purchase a data plan when buying an IPHONE ?. If what you're saying is true, I will be doing this for the 6 next fall... Can someone please chime in and explain this a bit further.
Thanks
You add a new line to purchase the iPhone. Then activate an old dumbphone on the new line removing the need for a data plan.
I did this last year. You purchase the iPhone, subsidized, on the new line, but you activate it on your existing line. You need to have another phone to use on the new line. I didn't have an old phone to use, so I bought a cheap prepaid phone and used that. The rep at the AT&T store did it all for me on release day...it was painless and gives me an available subsidized upgrade each year. It's worth $10/month to me because I like to have the latest version of the iPhone. The AT&T rep told me that they do this "upgrade swap" all the time...
I've always had the latest iphone from the 3G, 3GS, 4, 4s and the 5. I sold my iphone 5 last week and had every intention on upgrading to the 5s. Just left the AT&T store with a brand new iphone 5 and saved $100 over the 5s. This is the first time I've ever skipped an iphone but to be honest with you I'm not impressed with the fingerprint scanner as i have never even used a lock code!. The processor upgrade is nice but the iphone 5 is blazing fast and is a beast. Will definitely get the 6 though!.
Anyone know if we're going to be able to do cross upgrades again? I'm on my family's AT&T plan and my number isn't eligible but my mom's is. Last time I tried to do this they totally screwed me over and ended up deactivating the sim on the number I ordered it under which just so happened to be my dad's work phone (an on-call phone that is never supposed to be off). Anyway, I know that after this happened to me and many others they figured out that when they were telling us to go through the activation on the screen, they should have switched over the sim and IMEI numbers in their system first. Anyone know if this is going to be the case again? My parents don't mind be using the upgrade but if I get another phone shut off it is not going to be good.
Why didn't you keep the 5 and have an available upgrade for the 6?
I have 5 lines so I always have a line that's gets the full subsidized price every year.
Good idea. My plan has 5 lines, and there's always an available upgrade on one of the lines. However, I likely skip this upgrade, unless that new processor is BLISTERINGLY fast. Wouldn't mind a space gray iPhone either.
Used my wife's upgrade to get the 5, using my upgrade to get the 5S. She gets my 5 and I sell her 4S on eBay.![]()
My yearly model exactly.
Yearly staggered upgrades and selling on eBay basically mean that you can get the new phone every single year for little-to-nothing out of pocket.
