If you don't want to extend your contract for 2 new years then just buy it full price from what you get from your iPhone 5 sale and add around $100-300 depending on what you have and get and then you can upgrade next year to a new shell (6)

I would resell your 5 and buy the 5s at full retail. That way, your contract doesn't start over and then next year you can get the 6 at the fully subsidized price. This strategy seems to work out to be the cheapest if you want to upgrade every year.

Also, I may be mistaken, but I thought if you take an early upgrade with AT&T you can't do it again for at least another 18 months or maybe the full 2 years even, but I don't remember for sure.

So he pays for a subsidized rate for all that time w/o using the subsidy? The math doesn't work out in his favor.

Wow, you guys must either be serious Apple fanboys or serious smartphone fanboys. I could never handle the same phone over and over.

My smartphone history has been:

iPhone 3g
iPhone 4
Samsung Droid Charge (Yeah big mistake lol)
iPhone 4s
Samsung Galaxy S3
Htc One (Current)

The only difference with the iphone4 and the 4s was a faster processor and a robot that you said stupid stuff to for a while. Amusing for a few days and then you forget siri (Although I must say, the two iphones walk into a bar joke was hilarious).

The S3 and the HTC One are both refreshing changes, esp given the fact that they add their own modifications to android. You people must all wear the same clothes and drive the same cars

I couldn't stand switching platforms. That would annoy the crap outta me, esp now that I have Apple TV.

I will be doing this. Fortunately, there is always someone eligible to upgrade on our family plan. This year, my mom will let me take her upgrade and she is fine with taking a wiped/pristine 5.

Then, by the time the 6 is rolling out, I will be able to use my upgrade and hopefully so on and so forth. The only hassle is upgrading for someone else, but an Apple representative told me so long as I have her 2 forms of ID and my number is the main that I can upgrade for her. I'll be sure to take a screenshot of that conversation with me!

I am.

I thought I wouldn't, but I take a lot of photos of my young kids and they can't stand still for photos. If I take just one more memorable shot that will delight not only my life, but theirs and their kids some day, it's already worth it.

Also the touch ID seems alright, I haven't used a password until now because I find it cumbersome, so it would be a security upgrade for me.

If I do manage to get $450 for it on eBay (since its still pretty good condition), that will be enough to cover the cost. Only downside is, my contract would be renewed to a new 2-year only after 1 year.

The 2-year contract equals higher monthly costs. Possibly much higher than if you are off-contract. So I don't think it is accurate to say the "cost" is "covered," because you are paying for it via the higher monthly two-year service contract.

Personally, I buy only no-contract phones. Save a lot of money via lower monthly costs, plus freedom, when you don't lock in and pay very high subsidized rates for your phone.

So by adding another line would get someone the 5s for an additional $10 per month ( on top of regular monthly charges)?. I thought one had to purchase a data plan when buying an IPHONE ?. If what you're saying is true, I will be doing this for the 6 next fall... Can someone please chime in and explain this a bit further.
Thanks

You add a new line to purchase the iPhone. Then activate an old dumbphone on the new line removing the need for a data plan.

Anyone know if we're going to be able to do cross upgrades again? I'm on my family's AT&T plan and my number isn't eligible but my mom's is. Last time I tried to do this they totally screwed me over and ended up deactivating the sim on the number I ordered it under which just so happened to be my dad's work phone (an on-call phone that is never supposed to be off). Anyway, I know that after this happened to me and many others they figured out that when they were telling us to go through the activation on the screen, they should have switched over the sim and IMEI numbers in their system first. Anyone know if this is going to be the case again? My parents don't mind be using the upgrade but if I get another phone shut off it is not going to be good.

I sell my iPhone on CL every year and get the new one for the same price or less, so I actually make $$$ out of the whole process :D

I did this last year. You purchase the iPhone, subsidized, on the new line, but you activate it on your existing line. You need to have another phone to use on the new line. I didn't have an old phone to use, so I bought a cheap prepaid phone and used that. The rep at the AT&T store did it all for me on release day...it was painless and gives me an available subsidized upgrade each year. It's worth $10/month to me because I like to have the latest version of the iPhone. The AT&T rep told me that they do this "upgrade swap" all the time...

Thanks for the info on this. So do you just turn the ringer off on the prepaid phone and store it in the drawer? LOL

I've always had the latest iphone from the 3G, 3GS, 4, 4s and the 5. I sold my iphone 5 last week and had every intention on upgrading to the 5s. Just left the AT&T store with a brand new iphone 5 and saved $100 over the 5s. This is the first time I've ever skipped an iphone but to be honest with you I'm not impressed with the fingerprint scanner as i have never even used a lock code!. The processor upgrade is nice but the iphone 5 is blazing fast and is a beast. Will definitely get the 6 though!.

Yes I will be upgrading....but not to a iphone 5S. At least not for me. I think I will upgrade my wife's line from her 4S to the 5S, but I am making a switch this go around for the first time in years. Plan to sell my iphone 5 and go Android. Probably will be back in another year for the iphone 6 though if they change the design up enough and add some more useful features that are missing big time right now for me and what I want. I will just buy the phone that I choose at full retail so as to not re-up my contract for another 2 years. Best thing to do anyways as I hate being on contract with cell providers.

Still on the fence. The mrs. and I each have an iPhone (4S for her, 5 for me) and we both want to upgrade. Cost to upgrade both is quite high though so unless I can get enough back from selling both the 4S and 5 then I won't be upgrading.

Money permitting, I'll upgrade my black iPhone 5 to a grey iPhone 5S. Truth be told, what I really want is the 5C but with the 5S features.

I got the 5 and my upgrade isn't till September 2014, but I'm using my father's upgrade (he doesn't care about his phone.) I've heard people say they set up a "dummy line" with a dumb phone so they may get lots of upgrades

Why didn't you keep the 5 and have an available upgrade for the 6?

I cross upgraded to get my 5. It's a very smooth process but there was an AT&T rep there to help on launch day.

I have 5 lines so I always have a line that's gets the full subsidized price every year.

Good idea. My plan has 5 lines, and there's always an available upgrade on one of the lines. However, I likely skip this upgrade, unless that new processor is BLISTERINGLY fast. Wouldn't mind a space gray iPhone either.

Me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sold my 5 two weeks ago for 600.00$$$$$
called at&t and spoke to retention and they are letting me upgrade just like i do every year since first iphone....

I'm upgrading. Due to quirk from when I left my prior job, my 5 is unlocked and off contract. So I can get upgrade price on the 5S and then sell the 5 for a nice chunk of change.

I feel you man. It's just the iPhone 5 is so freaking fast. I really have no complaints about it. This is the first time ever since the 3G I haven't upgraded early but there's always the iPhone 6 :).

Used my wife's upgrade to get the 5, using my upgrade to get the 5S. She gets my 5 and I sell her 4S on eBay. :D

My yearly model exactly.

Yearly staggered upgrades and selling on eBay basically mean that you can get the new phone every single year for little-to-nothing out of pocket.

That's kind of true. But it depends on what you mean by "little-to-nothing out of pocket" costs. I have a iphone 5 32gb and most are going for $400-430 range on ebay. After fees the net take is well under $400 and non-contract 32gb 5(s) is $749.
