The whole idea is that you HAVEN'T been charged yet. If you're using debit, a HOLD will be put on your card. Depending on which bank you go through, they will actually drop that hold after X amount of days if the transaction doesn't go through. Today happened to be the day that my bank dropped the hold (ordered the phone on the 10th), but you better believe that on Monday AT&T will have it right back up there. I use Bank of America, so online this will be a "pending" transaction while it is waiting to be shipped; once it is shipped it will be changed to "cleared." Back to the point, technically AT&T doesn't have your money, therefore you haven't really been charged. As someone has mentioned, they want to make sure that you have the money so that when they do charge it, they will be able to take it out of your account.

If you read my post I said nothing about it making or breaking my bank account, but the majority of people who follow their accounts would notice 300 dollars just missing from their available account. I guess life up on the high horse affords you the ability to not have to monitor your finances.... hooray for you

I said comments within threads like this. I didn't refer to your post specifically. Read much?

Hey Moneybags if you don't watch your cheeze there will always be a rat to take it away.

I keep an extra account that only has the amount of money I need for whatever in it (debit), so if ATT tells me its going to cost 3xx and I put 400 dollars into that account for that transaction an extra auth on top of that would put me over the edge. Its great that OP (as well as others on other boards) mentioned this to anyone who might use a debit card for this type of transaction. Knowledge is power :D

Read the first sentence of my second paragraph. Looks like you read about as well as the OP.

Anytime you purchase something with a debit card, expect the price to be "preauthorized" and then expect the price to be charged. Hence doubling the price required. They will then evetually credit your card......the "to be questioned" places will hold onto your double money as long as they can. Why not? there is interest to be made.

Get a credit card that you can pay in full every month. When BS like this happens, you know what your final bill is and the ins and outs are worked out correctly.

I'm using B of A too and ordered on the 9th but still haven't had the transaction drop or anything unless they did so on Friday and made a new request.

Apparently Knowledge is only power for those who live paycheck to paycheck. Moneybags doesn't worry about that though. They say it won't be charged until it ships, so anyone expecting to walk up and pay that morning on a pre-order is mistaken as the $ will be gone before the 19th.

You missed his point or part of it.
What I took from it was whether now or then it has to come out and if you're so strapped that you cannot pay today then why order today?
My theory is this, buy what you want and expect the money to be gone that day. If you cannot afford it now don't use the preorder method as your personal lay away.

Now I get that it was anticipated that if you preorder it ships and charges around the same day and since it did not you were surprised. I would be too but in the end I'd just say that it was bound to come out sooner or later. That doesn't make me rich or careless with my account, it just means I was able to pay the second I clicked "buy".

I see your point but I can see his too because I'm not looking it on the defense like it sounds like you may be.

If I can't afford to buy something then I don't. I was bugged that I had 2 authorizations on my card at once. Sorry this bugged me, it doesn't have to bug you. AT&T said they would charge your account when the phone shipped which is why i'm ASSuming they will be Monday or Tuesday since my card has 2 charges to it 1 on the 9th and the other on the 12th.

I'll leave the rest to the financial advisors in the room to get all hot and bothered over.

"Your credit card will not be charged until the order is shipped."

That quote is straight form the AT&T email so those who believe they are paying on Friday are misinformed.

That could be the case. I can't remember how many days it is exactly... I guess 2 or 3 lol. But I just remember this exactly same scenario happening last year when I had ordered from AT&T on launch day and had to wait a couple weeks.

I ordered mine from a local AT&T store also and I was charged instantly. I paid by debit though.
I just attempted to pay for my iPhone 3GS upgrade and was refused because I wanted to pay with a Visa Debit Card............................

Anyone else have this problem at an AT&Fail store?

I know moneybags you just made it sound like People who bought iPhones and stretch themselves out a lil' are the cause of the economic crisis. ATT won't give you a phone without a deposit if you don't have sufficient credit, and if you have sufficient credit that means someone trusted you enough to lend you some cash, so it's all good.

I just don't think the quality of the post changes depending on whether or not the op is living paycheck to paycheck or is the biggest penny pincher ever with massive assets and swiss bank accounts.

I think he was trying to say if you you have to take a glance or two at your online account after making a $200 or $300 purchase there's a good chance many should not be make that purchase unless it is absolutely necessary and I agree. He made it plan in his first post he was not pointing at anyone here.

Good brief. lighten up.

Well, the hold on my account has now been dropped. When should I be looking for it to charge again? I just don't want my bank to stop the hold, and make me not eligible for my iPhone on Friday.
