Has there been a more recent study around this? I would say the fact that Apple themselves uses OLED in their highend says a lot.

I literally have no idea, and that's why I asked. I'm not even saying OLED isn't better, I'm just asking about whether or not LCD can be perfectly alright.

With the whole industry basically moving to OLED and Apple putting a low resolution LCD in the XR, I don't have great confidence in it. They aware clearly looking to cut costs. The least they could have done is put in a 1080P LCD display in there instead of 828P.

I'm sure it's just as good, if not better, than the screen in the iPhone 8. Don't hear any complaints about that one at all, so, I think it's foolhardy to worry about it being "inferior".

And as such the resolution is higher. It's the same 326ppi. Or are you saying you plan on holding the XR closer to your face?

I don’t know. I’m s tech enthusiast so the idea of a sub 1080p on a 6.1 inch display sounds awful to me. However for most it will probably be just fine.

Oh, I agree that it sounds bad. Then again, I have my Note 9 on FHD+ mode so maybe my PPI is lower than it should be as well.

Anytime I have a Samsung phone I always set it to the maximum resolution. I’m a bit of a screen snob though.
How is your note 9?
Currently deciding between this and the max and I’ve given myself until Wednesday to decide.

I like it. Everything is pretty snappy, though I've done my normal thing of shutting off all animations. And I like the pen. The only problem i have is a worry about updates, but that goes without saying.

Why would you do this to yourself? I always go WQHD+ from Day 1. Or are you not able to see the difference?

Some folks don't see the difference, and I don't really see it either unless I go pixel peeping. I have mine set to WQHD+ however, only because the battery gains on FHD+ are minimal.

I am one of the ones who do see it, especially in text heavy apps like WhatsApp, certain letters like 'e' and 's' can look a bit off in FHD+, they tend to look a bit thicker and pixelated, it's weird but I cannot help but notice it when I look at somes phone set at FHD+ or less.

I do see the difference with text, it looks ... bigger? But if I'm watching videos, there's no benefit.

I'm torn with the XR. I love the design of it, but really don't know whether the screen and camera will be an issue for me.
I know the camera will likely be improved, but how much by is the big question. It's annoying that I have an option to go and get an XS right now but with the Pixel 3 round the corner and the XR coming soon, I don't want to make the wrong decision.
I think the biggest thing for me is the size of the XR looks spot on. It's just between the XS Max and the XS which is perfect. I don't think the LCD display will bother me in any scenario other than video content, which I'll be honest I don't do loads of on my phone. If I do it's YouTube for a video about a videogame trophy I'm hunting or to watch a phone review in bed haha.
I just love the colours but could achieve a similar result by getting a black XS and a handful of coloured cases! Also, I remember the screen on my X last year just being incredible. My favourite smartphone screen yet, so know it'll be more of the same on the XS.

My Note 9 is set to FHD+. A friend of mine always sets his on WQHD, and he also claims he can tell the difference. One night we were drunk, and I set his S9+ to FHD+. He used it like that for almost a week until I told him I've changed it.
He's still pissed at that, but hey, at least he can tell the difference 😀
P.S.
Not claiming you can't, nor trying to argue. Maybe you really can. It really doesn't matter. I have 20/20 eye sight, and I really can't see any difference. Even why I really try hard.
If you’re always sending messages and reading on your phone, text is more crispy on Wqhd. Other than that it’s pretty hard to differentiate.

New articles text messages are simply more comfortable and easier to read the higher the resolution. I notice a difference but other's won't.
You can't miss what you have never had.
If your main device has been an iPhone 6/7 the past few years then you won't miss not having a high rez display on the XR.

for normal usage, you are not going to see significant difference. dont forget that your cable and netflix is 1080p on like 40". oled looks much better because of their superior color vibrancy and contrast ratio.
oled isnt that much more efficient in displaying white, the greatest efficiency is black. and you can guess for the colors in between.
