hey guys, I'm also trying to downgrade to Lion from Mountain Lion on macbook retina. But I have version 10. 7. 2 of Lion on a usb stick. From what Nathan said than.. is it still possible to install this version than on a macbook retina because it originally came with Mountain Lion.

If only version 10.7. 4 is compatible with macbook retina.. does that mean it won't install? I was hoping to upgrade to that version within 10. 7. 2 osx once it was installed

It will not boot, let alone install.

Have you tried internet recovery yet to be certain this is installing mountain lion not lion? it probably is downloading ML, but I've yet to see this verified anywhere and I'd like to know.

I don't mean the normal recovery partition, actual internet recovery where it downloads the boot files from internet, option-cmd-R

So if 10. 7. 2 wouldn't boot.. would 10. 7. 4 boot and install ? Because when Macbook retina's first shipped they came with that version

well my os x recovery partition says 10.8, I haven't tried internet recovery, I'm afraid it will take too long but I assume its also mountain lion .

tons of problems. Again.... battery life, audio stuttering (which I've read on apple forums is cured by downgrading back to Lion).. lag, etc.

Since your Rmbp came with ml, what is your point of reference to think your battery life is worse with ml than lion? Just thinking you might have unreasonable expectations of lion.

I don't have worse battery life since upgrading my Rmbp to ml fwiw.

well my os x recovery partition says 10.8, I checked the fresh install option and it says Mountain lion.

recovery partition is installed at the factory or by the current OS, this is why I said internet recovery, to know how apples servers deal with it.

also no, 10.7.4 wont run, it has to be the rMBP specific build, nothing else will boot on it.

hi Nathan, I just checked the list.. my macbook retina came with 10.8 , so if I have build 11E2617 of Lion, could I still install it ?

Unlike an iOS device, it doesn't matter what the computer originally came with, only what it can run. You can run any Mac OS X on that computer that is equal to or newer than the versions on that list.

I just purchased a June 2012 MBP FD102X/A from the refurbished store. I know that this is not a Retina version but the principle is the same. It came with ML installed but I need Lion (which is why I bought this one, the details indicated it came with Lion, and I had the option to upgrade). Apple have offered to refund it but the thing is we need the Laptop and we need Lion.

I am not a nanny, i dont believe rumours, I have other commercial software worth $2k that wont run on ML. Thanks for understanding :)

I have a Lion install image, both on CD and USB. but both result on the circle with slash through it suggested that its not compatible. This image would have been the first version that came out.

What are my options? Perhaps all i need is a later build of Lion and it will boot off that.

His only correct point is the battery drain. Even Apple knows about this issue existing. It's supposed to be addressed in the .1 update that was previewed a week ago.

That said, OP should consider doing a clean install of ML before assuming that Lion is better only because it's older. Also understand that Apple will gear future updates to ML and focus on rMBP improvements there as well. Just look at the graphics improvement in ML vs L on the rMBP.

Why don't u just install a lion vm?

I downloaded the latest build of Lion from the App Store using another Macbook and copied to flash drive, and was able to Install easily, by booting with Option key.

Fairly straightforward. So obviously even though the Macbook Pro came preinstalled with Mountain Lion, it will happily allow itself to be rolled back to the Lion version that it was originally released with. My original Lion installer was obviously a younger version.

However obviously you need to have previously bought Lion via the App Store and perhaps download with another computer.
