Do you honestly see yourself using your iPhone as a USB drive? Even if it had that functionality (it doesn't), how would you plug it in? You would have to bring the cable with you, which is far less convenient than a USB thumb drive.

How different is bringing a coiled up small cable along than a thumb drive?

Bringing a cable along with you actually makes more sense because you can use it to charge your phone with any computer on the go as well as use the phone like a USB drive.

I have been trying to avoid jailbreaking by finding every way possible to do the things I want without needing jb'd apps.

That being said I downloaded a free app called iPen Drive and it seems to be doing the job. ALTHOUGH it only works with a computer that has itunes and through itunes does the job. Not as good as an actual thumb drive but it's the best I can do. I'll post some pics of how it works.

If you're not jailbroken, I would suggest you look into Air Sharing and / or File Sharing apps in iTunes app store. I use air sharing all the time and its very nice indeed.

Also, to those saying that Dropbox is insecure because its in the cloud and a 3rd party may/may not have access to it, then I say one thing TrueCrypt. Its free and, really, quite awesome. Create a small encrypted file, put in in Dropbox, win.
Free!

Doesn't seem to be available from the US App store at least...

You can use Quickoffice Connect app, even the free trial works.

You can do file transfers over wifi, using nothing but an internet browser on the pc. I keep my resume on the phone so I always have it on hand.

That said you should jailbreak, makes the phone 100x better.

How do you connect to the PC via WiFi then please? using Internet Explorer? I may have access to a laptop with WiFi at work and can then transport the files?

I've looked at Air Sharing too, looks good.

I dont really want to JB my phone, what extra does it give you? The apps I buy are cheap or free, so not bothered for that reason.

Let me clarify- Air Sharing IS available. I was referring to TrueCrypt which I do not now see available at the App store. Sorry for the confusion.

I use usb disk from the app store. It was free, and I can carry all my files with me

Oh right. TrueCrypt is not an iPhone application. Its a standard program for your computer. But still the same rule applies. Instead of using your iphone to carry your files around, merely encrypt the file on your desktop then copy it up to Dropbox in the cloud.
This supposed 3rd party could get to the file, but they can't do much with it. The you could use the drop box app, or dropbox on your other system to retrieve it.

Hope that clarified what I was trying to say.

USB keys are dirt cheap

just get one for like 5-10 bucks and call it a day

if you are not allowed to have usb keys at work THEN CLEARLY you aren't allowed to do the same thing with your phone

sounds like you are trying to do something sketchy btw
