i'm sure it would be the exact same application as the AIM mobil which does allow you to chat with a cell number, you can also email with a cell number.. I like having all of the options because all my friends have different preferences.

that seems redundant to me. Something you can do ONLINE just, not through a browser.. its like the ebay app.. seems redundant to me.

Well in some cases, certain sites don't have a mobile edition (or the mobile edition sucks), so having a native app to use is more convenient. Plus the native apps are generally quicker than using the web site, since they have less content to load from the internet.

i guess thats just one that i dont see a use for in my every day life, although i KNOW my little sister is a facebook addict and would probably want something like that.. i check my myspace profile about once a month now.. i had to detox from it a while back..

At WWDC, while Scott Forstall was explaining the Push Notification Service, there was an app on the screen entitled "IM", does anyone know if that was the AIM IM app, or if that was an Apple-official IM app?

Probably just a mock up so people would get the point that it would work with an IM app.

The sounds they used were AIM sounds though so could have been.

AOL showed off AIM on March 6, they were only working on it for 2 weeks. From then until now they should have a full featured client ready by the App Store release. If they do not, I would be heavily disappointed.

They might release at launch but unless Apple makes an exception for them running a background process it will be useless until the new notification servers are up in September.

That's also disappointing, no notification servers until september. 3G, GPS, background running apps and iChat should have been top priority for Apple. Atleast they got 3G and GPS so far.

How will chatting through the AIM app on the iphone save you money on SMS costs? ATT counts aim messages as text messages.

AT&T charges AIM messages as texts when you are on AIM through texting. If you are talking to people on AIM via text messages then you are charged for texts. I highly doubt that when AOL releases AIM that when you send messages THROUGH AIM you will NOT be charged for texts. Because, it isn't texting, it's AIM.

Oh, I see. If you're on the AIM app though, will you be able to receive other peoples messages (if they're sending them through their texts, and not AIM)

When I'm on AIM I receive messages from people's texting, whether I'm on the computer or my sidekick.

you should read the rest of this post about the push and background apps.

You should read the date on the quote you're citing (hint: this is quote from the SDK event, we already knew AIM was working on an IM app, the functionality of it will be limited prior to the launch of the notification servers this September).

Oh, and the reason why AIM counts as text messages on your plan of your other phones is that it isn't AIM, rather it is AIM via SMS. They're effectively routing IM through the SMS system. With a real IM app they won't charge you.

call me neive, but what kind of APP would you need for myspace? I can get on myspace.com easily from my iphone and bop around on there.. Would it just be a mobil myspace where you can add pictures to?

Presumably you'd be able to upload photos from your phone using it, which is a significant boost.

I imagine Facebook will do something that achieves much the same. If Flickr do as well that might even placate my displeasure that it's not in Safari for all sites.

it doesnt matter WHEN the qote was from, there was still some question as to whether or not it was definite because it was not mentioned again in the most current keynote.. so why not calm some confusion and post a little quote that is FACT.

On the other hand, when someone asks a question about a topic that was discussed 3 posts head, THAT is just lazy
