i just wish apple would incorporate the multiple chats into one window, as AIM does, with tabs for different conversations. it is just cumbersome and annoying when talking with multiple people and having to use exposé to find the chat.

But they did.

I dont understand what you're looking for? all my conversations are tabbed in one window when using ichat. just like when i was using back in my PC days.

I'm confused by this. I just assumed AOL stopped doing anything with AIM because of iChat (which can communicate with AIM users). Why would a Mac user NOT use iChat now, and use this AIM For Mac Beta instead? So they can have wallpapers and different sounds? Do they really think this will drive more interest in their dead e-mail service? Seems like a waste of resources here...

Here's why this is good...

I cannot sign into my AOL screen name via iChat or the old AIM (don't know why, says i'm blocked or suspended, no way to complain to Apple or AOL to fix it)

But I can sign on to my AOL screen name on the new AOL Desktop Beta and this new AIM Mac Beta!

YAY! :)

iChat would be much better if it were open to more messenger services (Yahoo and MSN). I say the more competition, the better.

dude, AIM ignored Macs for YEARS... plus, AIM is complete crap anyway. I never used it on my PC when I had one (I always used something like Trillian). I don't even use iChat... Adium all the way.
AIM can go screw itself... :)

Aohell?

I stopped using AOL what feels like decades ago, and I don't miss it. I stopped using AIM after it became complete adware. In fact, the only person I still know using AOL despite repeated attempts to force her to switch is ....

my mom.

I just switched back to adium. Once again, file transfers STINK. I don't know what's wrong, but it just can't connect .

But here's my take on AIM. In America (at least new england) AOL IM, is probably the widest used protocol.

Pros:

-Eye candy: The UI on Windows machines allows for emotions to act nifty things out.

- Probably no issue with file transfers

Cons:

-Ad supported
-At startup: Opens all kinds of windows
-You need to de-select all kinds of bloatware
-Feels very "heavy"
-Downloading it makes you feel dirty (as if your computer is loaded with a whoooole bunch of crap... something iChat and Adium do without).

Who came up with that wall paper thing?! This is just U-G-L-Y...
And.. the blue and red chat log makes me feel like we're going back to the good old days of ICQ...

Worst Mac Software UI Award -- We have a clear winner.

Not on my HD...

I would never allow an AOL-made program admin permissions, so I didn't even install it.

Sigh... no msn on iChat, yet...

Adium is cool, but I love the interface on iChat. I only wish it would do MSN Messenger. I live in Canada and absolutely everyone uses MSN. We even have to use it all day at work. I work in a 100 person office and it's how we collaborate and transfer a LOT of our files. If Adium had video chat, then that would be Ok... iChat with Messenger (and video) would be ridiculously awesome. I don't get it... If Adium can do MSN, then why can't Apple?

Now why would Apple ever want to support a Microsoft service???? :p

give me MSN (not cause i want it, but because EVERYONE uses it) and add integrated video support, and I will be happy

If i had my way, id still be on ICQ, but id be talking to myself.

Whoah, what's with all this hate, and let's focus on AIM, not the company itself or the browser. Me and my friends all use AIM. And I just entered college and all the people I've met uses AIM. Doesn't AIM still have the largest market share, at least in the US? Im so glad AOL is still focusing on AIM for Mac because there's features missing in iChat that I miss. Hope AOL will continue supporting this program for Mac.

Nah, iChat stays

You know, it's that app that comes with your computer that you immediately delete and put Adium in its place.

Sorry, but Adium just annoys me to no end. I send JPGs, PSDs, PDFs, etc and everytime I deal with someone on Adium they have to switch to iChat to get anything (perhaps it's a firewall thing, not sure, don't care, just know iChat always works). Plus the share desktop (many of the people I work with are remote) is solid as well as video chat.

I will say many people dig their expressions in AIM, and I'd say that would be a big selling point on switchers. Not something I care about so much however.

Wow, that took too long. I'm very happy with ichat. I did try out a few times, but didn't like the fact it lacked video conferencing. adium

Seriously, am I the only one here who still uses AIM and have an AOL mail account?

Glad that AOL's finally given attention to Mac users... looking forward to downloading this newer version with iSight compatibility and getting rid of iChat!
