Seriously, am I the only one here who still uses AIM and have an AOL mail account?

Glad that AOL's finally given attention to Mac users... looking forward to downloading this newer version with iSight compatibility and getting rid of iChat!
I use AIM and I am learning ichat. AIM isn't bad

Lol but no video/audio support?

So what would be the point? Why would I use the new AIM when iChat looks, feels, and is so much better

Seriously, am I the only one here who still uses AIM and have an AOL mail account?

yes. the last time i used AOL was with a modem back in 1996

-----------

i'm glad aim is coming out with something. i actually used the 2004 aim for mac before ichat, i liked it a lot better too

I dont understand what you're looking for? all my conversations are tabbed in one window when using ichat. just like when i was using back in my PC days.

It amazes me, the amount of people that say "iChat has tabbed browsing, what are you talking about?"... It's only in Leopard, people. :) I have Tiger and the lack of tabbed browsing is truly annoying - it may be the only feature I don't like in the entire operating system. It's certainly the only one that I know I want. I, for one, like that AIM is back to Mac, even if this beta is lacking.

One of my 3 email accounts is still AOL Mail. I signed up with iTunes under that account, and find I'm the only person I know that uses an AOL name on iTunes.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20)

Are people hating on the AIM service, client, or both?

Ah, Should've specified. In that case, download Chax an iChat add-on that offers more or less the same things as iChat for Leopard.

and I can't remember the rest, it's been a while since I've used Tiger. :(

Since you mentioned it, is GoogleTalk popular in US? I've never seen it mentioned along other IMs on this forum... odd.

Yes, all my friends are obsessed with gChat (although I've never really gotten into it) - primarily because you can a) use it at work (it's not blocked like AIM and other outdated programs), b) see and talk to other people that you've emailed but not added to your buddy list, and c) actually access your AIM buddy list through it and appear online to people who still log on using iChat, adium, etc. AIM screen names are still huge in the US, even though there are clearly better alternatives out there, it's just simpler for most people to use the same sn they've been using for probably nearly a decade now.

I use AOL mail, but I use it with Mail.app so I don't have to visit the AOL site. Even then, I mostly use it for sites that I don't really want them to know my real e-mail address.

And I use AIM but with iChat, because iChat supports video and secondly, I'm already using AOL's IM service, I don't want to use their application on top of that. That's just too much AOL. I'm just using them for their services.

I am still learning ichat, so how do you change screen names?

Open iChat. Click 'iChat' on the top bar and choose 'Preferences'. Choose the 'Accounts' tab and then hit the '+' button on the bottom left of that and add another account.

Worth a shot....oh wait, forgot everyone is on MSN :( Nice to see company renewing mac interest though

Everyone is on MSN? Really? I guess I never noticed since no one I know uses MSN and I'd NEVER use anything Microsoft unless I had to since I hate Microsoft in general (not that I like Apple as a company much better as of late).

I am always surprised at how people vote negative on someone adding better support for the Mac with logic like 'too little too late' and what not. If Mac users are going to be snobs and take that attitude with everything, they'll never get software from anyone but Apple since Mac support has always been lousy compared to the PC. I think it has something to do with less than 10% market share. Increasing support should be a positive sign, but vote negative anyway. That'll show 'em or something....like they care.

Personally, I use Yahoo Messenger because it has video and call support and I actually know people that use it unlike iChat which I know no one that uses it because it's only for Macs and everyone I know uses Windows still. Actaully, I've seen people I know on iChat, but they're actually using AIM so they can't see any video feeds.

AOL? Hah! Don't make me laugh; I've lost interest in AOL the moment I used it years ago.

dude i totally agree. last time i used it was in freshmen or sophomore year in high school. lol

I'm confused by this. I just assumed AOL stopped doing anything with AIM because of iChat (which can communicate with AIM users). Why would a Mac user NOT use iChat now, and use this AIM For Mac Beta instead? So they can have wallpapers and different sounds? Do they really think this will drive more interest in their dead e-mail service? Seems like a waste of resources here...

Yeah this was what i was thinking. That aim would not make in the world of ichat users. first can aim cannot do the sweet sh*t ichat can do. Like instant file sharing and desktop control, and iphoto sharing.

AIM did a good job on this Beta. It takes advantage of previous keychain information (Adium ;)) and some nice Quartz effects for contact info that doesn't get annoying.

It needs a little clean up in the preferences but it's a good start.

Wow. I really had thought AOL died years ago along with my 56K modem and Performa 6360...

I use iChat mainly, but when I'm not using my MBP or am using my MBP on Windows, I use the chat feature built in to Gmail.

I personally never used it, but one of my friends who is a certified apple technician still uses it for mail as well, but more for things like craigslist etc, .mac for normal/personal things ...

ahhhh the good old days of 56k. I forgot about that and when i had it. Remember you had to actually log in to use the internet, and the computer would make noises. does aol still provide internet?

So - within the evening I download the all new AIM, I find it obsolete just as fast now that I downloaded Chax. Yet another one of those tricks I just found out about. It really is great! A few minor issues here and there but this is perfect! I get to keep on using iChat and don't have a waffle grid of conversations cluttering my screen. :D Hallelujah to technology.

For every feature I like in Leopard, there's a way to replicate it in Tiger. Developers and Programmers never cease to amaze me. Needless to say if they update the Mini in a couple weeks I'm going to be comparing a lot. :p
