I just updated the current PB of High Sierra (17A352a) on a late 2015 5k iMac with 3TB Fusion Drive. I didn't get (or at least I didn't notice) an option to format to APFS.

But has it formatted to APFS? I did both my MBP and iMac and on both I didn't get an option. The MBP shows APFS, but the iMac (1TB Fusion Drive) doesn't?

Be interested to know why my iMac would not convert. The option was not there in the latest beta. Assume that there was a reason. Still on hfs+.

I didn’t get the option either. You still can try to convert yor file system to apfs by booting into recovery mode and using the convert option. BUT i wouldn’t recommend it at the current state of the beta

that's what I'm thinking, there must be a reason for it, so better not force it either. I can wait.

It didn’t convert to APFS.

Thanks for the updates everyone, I think it's safe to say we'll have to wait and see what happens with APFS on Fusion Drives.

My late 2013 iMac with a 1TB fusion drive has APFS installed. Booted into recovery, unmounted disk then converted using the Disk utility options.

Experiencing fast and stable performance on Day Three after installing PB 6 (17A352a) on my Late 2014 5K Retina with a fusion drive after converting to APFS. No more waking my iMac from sleep every morning and finding a folder and question mark staring at me. Finger's crossed it stays this way through future PBs and the GM.

Apple has now stated that Fusion Drives and standard hard disk systems will not be converted to APFS by High Sierra. Presumably Apple has found some bugs that aren't yet fixed and won't be by the time 10.13 ships.

When you upgrade to macOS High Sierra, systems with all flash storage configurations are converted automatically. Systems with hard disk drives (HDD) and Fusion drives won't be converted to APFS. You can't opt-out of the transition to APFS.

I can live with it. Already all encrypted hard drives and no noticeable time difference. Not had any issues so far.

Yeah, I'm thinking it's one of two things.
  1. They just aren't converting fusion drives and HDDs automatically like they are with Macs that have only SSDs, and the option may be present post-install or during the process as an option depending on your Mac.
  2. Or they just flat-out won't be supported at launch.
What's interesting to me is that they've confirmed the switch will be automatic, even calling out the fact people can't opt-out on it. I'm surprised people aren't making that as big of a deal as is it. If you have a pure flash storage machine, you either get 10.13 with APFS or get nothing at all. They've also sent emails out to customers running some of their software like Logic Pro, saying that it might not be compatible upon launch pending on how updated it is. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207888

Release notes suggest Fusion drives will be supported since they acknowledge issues with 3TB models. Implicitly, these issues should be fixed by release.

If that were the case, then Apple wouldn't have released the technical document stating that Fusion Drives and HDDs won't be converted when High Sierra is installed.

I suppose Apple means that Fusion drives won't be converted automatically, not that the user won't be able to convert these disks.

Wish there was a note saying what was what. Working fine on beta 8. I can unmount my externals and covert but they took an age to encrypt (three 4tb).

So what I want to know, what will I gain? I do not do any video editing as such, bit of browsing, words processing and photo editing. Might just forget it and stick with what works.

I am also using a DIY fusion drive.. after converting into APFS, seems like it is now behaving like JBOD (Just a bunch of Disks) than FD.

As there are a lot of reading / writing to the HDD:(

When it was a HFS+ FD, most read/write happens in the SSD.
Did you check to see if TRIM became disabled on your SSD after the upgrade?

Macmini 2012 with FileVault turned on and fusion drive 1tb Apple HD + Samsung 256GB SSD on beta 8-

Installed 10.13b8 and was not given the option to upgrade to APFS on install.

System worked fine under HFS after install.

Booted into recovery console and convert to APFS was greyed out. Made sure drive was unmounted still grey.

Mounted drive and ran first aid through recovery console. No errors were found but it did adjust the logical volume size at the end.

Checked again, NOW Convert to APFS was selectable.

If fusion drives are not compatible then why the blue blazers do Apple sell the 2017 iMac if it don’t work get a grip.
The Apple document refers to earlier was aimed at system administrators not end users their update requirements are different in the way updates are rolled out.

Yes have have tried os 10.13 b8 and it failed in the same way flashing cursor in the hibernation stage of sleep ,but this time it corrupted the fusion drive big time no kicking it using terminal to get it sorted did the trick and yes I did try form the recovery command r but to no avail but it’s sorted now I will wait for the release and a .1 update

Can't see I am ever going to get an external SSD at the costs they are now and any future mac internals for me will be fusion considering what I can get on a new iMac. Add £90 for a 3tb fusion or £1260 for 2tb ssd. I expect there will be a fix. I can live with the old file format while it works.

How about fusion drive from 2 ssd's? Anyone tryet?

That would just a RAID, not a fusion drive. In order to be a fusion drive, it needs to be a traditional drive and a spinning hard disk. I believe setting up a fusion drive with two SSD or two traditional drives, would defeat the purpose of the Fusion drive.

The price and technology of SSD drives today, make it a moot point anyway.
