Not sure what you mean on losing "ease of use with a Mac". What do you mean?

I was gonna go for the Duet this summer when I get my MBP but now I'm even more excited.
The Duet 2 is very stylish. Very Apple-like actually. The only thing that worries me is the USB 2.0 but I guess we have to trust that the Apogee guys know what they're doing.
This is my concern, although it isn't a huge concern:
"Architecture - FireWire vs. USB 2.0
FireWire, built from the ground up for speed, uses a "Peer-to-Peer" architecture in which the peripherals are intelligent and can negotiate bus conflicts to determine which device can best control a data transfer
USB 2.0 uses a "Master-Slave" architecture in which the computer handles all arbitration functions and dictates data flow to, from and between the attached peripherals (adding additional system overhead and resulting in slower, less-efficient data flow control)"
Yes, USB isn't as good as Firewire, but Apple has pretty much killed firewire on their portable machines - so we're all going to have to get over it.
I absolutely wouldn't buy a firewire portable interface right now, since I doubt I'll find a Firewire interface on my next Mac laptop.
Realise that an audio interface doesn't really tax USB that much. 4 channels of 192/24 is 2MB of data a second. That's 1/10th the bandwidth that a cheap USB hard-drive easily manages.
Yes, USB uses the CPU. But we've all got at least 2 CPUs these days (I'm typing this on a machine with 8 CPUs, 7 of which spend most of the day sitting doing nothing).
The biggest issue with USB has been latency. Because the CPU couldn't give the interface it's attention 100% of the time, you'd have to have a big buffer and poor latency to minimise the chance of a drop out (the CPU has waited too long to check up on the interface, and some audio has been lost). If Apogee say that the latest versions of OSX have rewritten drivers that fix this issue, then we're pretty much all set. Certainly, they're recommending USB buffer settings as low or lower than Firewire for the Duet 2, so it would appear that this problem has been solved.
Lets not forget that you can't daisy chain USB.
For example I just purchased a MOTU 8pre to add on to my MOTU Traveler and these both connect to one firewire port on my MBP.
This might not matter to many, but if you think you're likely to need to add more inputs to your existing interface without replacing it then it's perhaps something to consider.
There's no evidence Apple is phasing out FW at all other than that one edition of the MacBook that didn't have it....
What are you talking about? The current MacBook doesn't have it - and it was dropped from the MacBook line a couple of revisions back. The MacBook Air has never had it. The MBA is no longer a niche product, with 15% of laptop sales.

I just placed my order at sweetwater.com. Got a call from the rep and should ship late April or early May. Breakout box is not available for preorder at this time.
That's what Sweetwater told me as well. When I talked to Apogee though they said that they were shipping out to all retailers in mid May. Let's hope the reps at Sweetwater are right and the guy I talked to at Apogee was wrong. I put my old Duet up for sale 2 weeks ago and it sold same day. Then I pre-ordered through Sweetwater. So it looks like I wont be able to record anything for a while.
I talked to both Sweetwater and Apogee and their stories matched. Apogee said they planned to ship to dealers the third or fourth week in April. And Sweetwater said they could probably get them to customers end of April or beginning of May.
Awesome that's better than what I was told.
Unfortunately, I have an updated report. Just spoke with an Apogee rep about 20 minutes ago. They said Apogee planned to ship the Duet 2 to US dealers on the 3rd week of May. So it's definitely pushed back a month, and I think your rep was right too. I'm bummed. I'm really anxious to get rid of my M-Audio ProFire 610. It's gotten buggier and buggier the last month or so. Now I'm going to have to just bear the pain until the Duet 2 finally shows up at my door, probably in June.
i heard this too from the Gearslutz thread about the Apogee Duet 2. Did you make a similar post there, lol. Anyway thanks for the update...i hope it comes in earlier in may than june

You might want to pre-order from Musiciansfriend instead. They have a May 2nd shipping date, free financing, same price, free shipping, plus a free $72 Korg NanoKontroller. I just cancelled my Sweetwater order and ordered from MF.
