App Library: I hate it

That’s a weird analogy. Having a knife in your body might be life-threatening, whereas this new feature - even though I don’t see any use for it so far - can simply be ignored.

Personally, I would hate that. I used to hate it on Android (and was happy when they finally replaced it with a swipe up). Having a mandatory icon on the home screen would be much worse than having a screen that's invisible as long as I do not swipe to it.

Unfortunately Apple has already become very “swipe happy”. Not even sure where you would put a new swipe.
I like the icon better than the current design.

I posted earlier in this thread that I didn't see the utility of the App Library as I have all my apps organised into folders. However, since I posted that, I decided to give the App Library another chance and I'm actually really liking it: I've hidden all my home pages except one and have only 4 app shortcuts on that page (along with a 4x2 Siri App suggestions widget and 3 2x2 widget stacks containing multiple widgets).

I've found that the Siri app suggestions is doing a good job of surfacing apps I want to use at any particular time, and beyond that everything is close at hand in the app library or via a quick search (which is how I accessed app a lot of the time even when I had them super organised)

The main benefit is I have more information at a glance on my home screen and I'm not simply looking at pages of folders all day

As a previous doubter of app library, I'm pretty much a convert now 🙂

Love it or loathe it, it should be a choice.

Going by how something similar like Today View has been in existence for years, seems like that's not the approach that Apple has taken with these type of OS features.

That reply must have been stated 50 times on this thread already. An option to turn it off would be better then everybody is happy.

Ultimately that is up to Apple (essentially no matter what anyone here might think one way or another). Until something like that happens (if it ever does) the way to deal with it for those who don't care for it seems to come down to just not using it, again, similar to how it has applied to various other features of that nature (like the Today View) for some time now.

The Widget page is always there on the left and no one makes a peep about that.

Given how much effort Apple put into this (even if it’s still a “work in progress”) people need to get that the chances of Apple giving you an option to disable it is about the same as Apple giving users the ability to run multiple app stores...

Thinking about this, I think the reason could be what would happen to apps you remove from your home screen if you've hidden the app library?
I guess Apple could remove the option to remove apps from your home screen if the App Library is disabled, but then that introduces two distinct ways of managing apps (app library enabled: you can delete apps or remove from home screen; app library disabled: You can only delete apps), not to mention what happens to apps that aren't on your home screen if you disable app library (do they just dump them all onto your home screen?)

Of course, all of this would be possible, but it is a bit more complex than simply hiding the page and Apple are always keen to keep things simple...

Just noticed if you pull down on the home page to generate a search box then enter say “T”. It will alphabetically list all your apps beginning with T.

Makes the swipe to the App Library and then pulling down to reveal the alphabetical list even more irrelevant.

Thank you for this suggestion. It's making picking apps a lot easier, even though I have two siri suggestion widgets on the home screen. IOS 14 really does feel simpler to use than the predacessor, even though I'm sure those siri suggestions and search were always there and I just didn't take advantage of it.

Arguing against; I have a bunch of Apple apps I don't use and have dumped into a folder. The App Library if I used it day to day would force them back into my workspace and I would be back to looking for a way to "hide" them.

This would be a good point for making the App Library into an icon (option in Settings) circa older Android Apps or just as @Baldilocks recommended, turning it off (not displaying it).

It certainly looks like some points related to that are continuously being overlooked. It seems that App Library is likely treated differently than just a setting of some sort given that similar features/screens like Today View that have been around for quite a while and don't have the ability to be removed. That aside, no one here, whether they agree or disagree, can do much about it one way or another.

I get the point. But stomping your little feet and saying "make it go away" is (1) not something we can control or (2) something Apple is likely to do. You need to be having this conversation with Apple because IF ANYONE can appease you with the App Library, it its them. No matter how many times you say it or how loudly you shout it, or how dramatically you do it, the App Library, as it exists today, is here to stay until Apple changes it... and complaining to us is just spitting into the wind.

i don't think it's unreasonable to have an option to hide it (i want that for the today page too). but expecting apple to accomodate 22 whining ppl on a mac forum is probably expecting too much.

if you want to abandon the entire platform because you can't turn the app library off... you should make that move, and torture a new group of people on an android forum (which has it's own issues).

The only time I even remember the App Library is there is when I read threads like this full of complaints about it. I don't swipe past my last page of apps, so I never see it. Out of sight, out of mind...

First of all, my size 13 feet aren’t little.

Couldn’t care less is Apple is listening or not. That’s not the point of this forum. The point of this forum is for me to agree with the OP and his/her hate of the App Library.

I’ve used an iPhone since the original and Android since the original Galaxy S. They can’t take me back if I never left.

You can choose to skip over my posts if that will make you happy though.

Not sure if someone agreement or disagreement actually changes anything for the OP in terms of their ability to avoid using the App Library.

And if simply sharing opinions (even without them actually addressing something that was brought up) is the point, then all kinds of different opinions would then be part of it all as options are subjective and would differ among different people.
