Never did trust apple with my CC, now I know why.

Still grocery store giftcards for me.

Where do you get iPhone gift cards and how do you use them w/iTunes?

I buy iTunes gift cards at Costco. I think a pack of four $15 cards costs $55, or so.

I'm glad I saw this thread. I wasn't following any of the hacking reports, but I'm going unlink my CC from my iTunes account.

I do this as well. And sometimes they go on sale. I picked up two sets a few weeks back when they had a $9 instant rebate. $44 for $60 in gift cards is a great deal...

One recommendation I've seen in general is to have a low limit CC just for Internet based transactions. If something costs more than the limit on the CC allows, pay some and get a credit. This way, you have credit card protection against fraud, but if worse comes to worst, you only are stung for a couple hundred dollars or so.

Or just use AMEX. The few times I have had an issue, either fraudulent charges or needing to charge back something due to crappy vendors, they took care of it right away.

Even though I have my AMEX number in iTunes, I still do gift cards from BJs club as like Costco, they sell them less than face every day and do run coupons occaisionally.

l just removed my amex from itunes and created a virtual number with a low limit and expiration after a few months.

This is the way to do it, as I posted above. You limit the potential impact yet still have all the protections of using a credit card.

I'm not sure how much help you'd get if you had a $50 itunes card on your account and it got hacked.

FAIL. It's an isolated incident with logical explanations.

1. fell for phishing
2. had easy to guess password
3. used same password at other websites, and other website was compromised

thats why we keep hearing about this more and more?

I really wish that was the case here. :(

My password was over 8 characters long and contained special characters, numbers, etc. I also use a different password on all of the sites I access. I don't fall for phishing scams, especially as my fiancee and I both teach others on computer safety and safe browsing practices.

OP, any updates?

I've only heard back from Zynga customer support, who has escalated my case for review. No news from Apple or PayPal yet, but I'll be giving Apple a call later today again once I'm finished with work. I tried calling Apple last night as well but after being on hold for 60 minutes I had to hang up.

None of my other passwords have been compromised thus far (probably because I use a different password for each).

good luck with everything! keep us posted.

that's why i only use the prepaid itunes cards (get them at sam's or best buy)! i've never given my CC to itunes and never will! i don't even load all my cards at once... bought a 4 pack of $15 itunes cards and put them in one at a time as i need them!

scammers SUCK!

I dunno about the OP, but I think in my case it was probably related to the app store scams (which happened twice) as reported by engadget:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/06/apple-responds-on-itunes-fraud-vaguely-confirms-said-fraud/

http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/09/itunes-fraud-takes-trip-to-travel-section/

I didn't find out until a day or two after i read the first article, I was trying to get some gas and my card was denied. Then I got home and got a message from the fraud dept of my bank about some Apple MobileMe charge for a little over $1. Some of the comments I saw in the article were like "who cares it's only a buck," but trust me if my case is anything to go by, fraudsters are just checking to see if your account is valid and if it goes through, they'll start having a field day with it.

I would seriously urge everybody to check their statements to see if anything weird's goin on.

How do you do that?

Open iTunes. Click on "Store" "View my account", then sign in.

Click on "Payment Information" Then under Credit Card, select "None"

Done, no CC on file with iTunes anymore. I will just start purchasing iTunes GC from target or BB and redeem them in iTunes as needed.

You sir, are the fail, it seems more and more iTunes accounts are being hacked, not all with easy to guess passwords, same password/user-name elsewhere. Phishing, possible, either way, my $1.23 in my iTunes account limits my liability to that, and I wont sweat if i lose it. Yes, CC liability is zero, but still have to deal with it.

So why don't you crawl back to 1999 by hanging up your modem.

treat it like any other CC fraud, the first call you make is to your CC company, and tell them what happened, they'll investigate and the charges will be removed from your balance, it really isn't too difficult

Good luck, OP. I really hope you get your money back.

I'm not one to freak over things such as this, but I'm with many other users on this. I just removed my CC information, & am going to stick with iTunes gift cards from now on. It's not really convenient, but whatever. Better than having people steal my money for things such as silly chips on a silly game.

I have two $1 pending charges from iTunes on my banking account. In my iTunes account history, there are no recent purchases that cost anything. I did have my iTunes directly linked to my banking account. I will change that now.

Yesterday I exchanged my new 8GB 3GS at the AT&T store. After restoring my backup, I had logged into the iTunes store.

I got a popup that stated that I was accessing iTunes with a new device and to login to verify my identity.

It seems now that Apple has added this new thing to help stop fraud. Anytime you access using a new computer or iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch, it will ask you to verify who you are.
