Apple this week announced its App Store Best of 2020 winners, recognizing 15 apps released over the course of the year. For the first time, winners are now receiving a physical award, and some developers have begun sharing their respective awards over the past few days.

Fantastical developer Flexibits, Genshin Impact, and Share the Meal have all provided photos of their awards. Constructed from 100 percent recycled aluminum, the square-shaped award features a mirror-like App Store logo on the front with the name of the winner engraved on the back.

Alongside the award, Apple is providing winners with a congratulatory letter that's signed by Apple CEO Tim Cook.
Congratulations! Your app is one of the best of 2020. Every year, the App Store celebrates exceptional apps that improve people's lives. These apps showcase the highest levels of quality, innovation and impact, and Apple is proud to recognize your app this year. Thank you for making a dent in the universe in 2020.
Along with Fantastical, Genshin Impact, and ShareTheMeal, other App Store award winners this year included Wakeout!, Zoom, Disco Elysium, Disney+, Dandara Trials of Fear, Endel, and Sneaky Sasquatch. Apple also highlighted Everything Whiteboard, Caribu, Pokémon Go, and Shine.

Did that say “PHYSICAL?” GAH! Panic! Everything must be virtual only.

(But honestly, these awards look pretty shiny and cool.)

This is really cool and a great accomplishment. Much love to all the developers out there.

Fantastical was great before they decided to back-stab us (paying customers). I decided to use the iOS free version and a cracked version for macOS. And I sync everything thru calDAV since I don't want Apple having access.
You don’t want Apple to see your data but are happy to run it though software modified and distributed by a gang of criminals?

Is the award not tight to the user rating in any way? WakeOut is dipping around with a crappy 3 rating and was awarded the BEST app of the YEAR?!?

edit: ok apparently the rating is better on the App Store in the US. But still ... only a 4.4

Next-up, Hopefully, Apple's list of "UN-Discovered Gem Apps for 2020" !

One per category, & ONLY ONE announced per day !

I asked Tim a week OR so ago if Apple would consider it ... time will tell if they act on it.

It has the potential to Move the Needle much more so than apps many had already known about !

I wonder if they’re solid aluminum.

It’s a shame they don’t light up like the cubes they used to give out.

Agree with John Gruber’s take that it’s a little troubling that Apple awarded a game that’s such a cash extractor.

If they qualified for the award fair and square, what’s wrong?

Sounds like a case of sour grapes by John Gruber.

hehe play genshin impact in ipad mini 2019 .Nice
** some folks mah relate it as zelda clone/copycat

With a 3.2 star rating, it still gets an award? Apple sure lowering the bar. Many people going to run out to "attempt" to grab this app, until they see the ridiculous subscription fee.
Feel bad for the apps without subscriptions that got snubbed because of name recognition

Mega corp development for the win!

I’d like to see best apps from indie devs/studios as well.

Physical award without charger... you know... for the environment.

Even the most financially viable gacha games aren’t necessarily good or fun to play, this one is. As someone who hasn’t spent money on the game but do pay it regularly, I’m impressed with the quality and the variety of places you go and folks you talk to. I’ve enjoyed it and I’d say it deserves the award regardless of the type of game it is.

The physical version looks far better than that horrible "I just opened 3DS Max for the first time" render they used in the press material.
