A couple of points:

Competition winnings aren't classed as income in the UK so there would be no tax on this - even people who win millions on the lottery in the UK don't pay any tax on their winnings.

The billionth download can't have happened a few days ago - as soon as Apple became aware that the target was reached the competition would have to be stopped otherwise Apple would have been guilty of using an incentive to encourage people to download apps when the incentive was no longer really there.

My own disappointment was short-lived, as on the very next web site I visited a big, flashing pop-up window appeared to tell me I was their 10,000th visitor and had won an iPad. Yeah!

;)

That's exactly the point of these contests. They don't really care who wins the contest, they just want us all to spend, spend, spend. Ask anybody working in marketing and advertising.

The point I'm trying to make is you're not allowed to carry on with a competition once you've got a winner.

Does anyone remember that Steve's vision of the Iphone and ipod touch as far as apps was concerned was "web only widgets?" As much as apple hates the jailbreak community, they owe the whole app store concept to it, since they were the ones who first made 3rd party native apps for IOS. Took apple 1 year to realize their mistake, but at least they realized it and we are all better for it.

Really, $10k to spend on iTunes? Jeez, there was a time when the prizes were actually something useful, like hardware. Who could spend $10k there?

Now she can purchase the whole Movie/Music collections on iTUNES..
And there's a whole lot of apps she can purchase on Mac Appstore.. *sniff* so lucky :(
