Over time android will die out. Developers are starting to sour on android due to fragmentation and other reasons. Apple has a good amount of users already and as time goes by and more developers focus on iOS and other android alternatives, people will leave android for lack of good apps.

Apparently Flash was going to be a selling point for android over iOS but I've read that it is not great. Steve was right. And this so called honeycomb was suppose to be the latest and greatest but has been delayed.

And then there is this odd statistic that android is heavily favored by men over women. If the percentage of female android users stays below 30%, the men will leave. It is easier to interact with the ladies if they are on the same platform.

Oh and don't forget the viruses and malware that are already cropping up on the "open platform".

All my friends with blackberries were asking me to google stuff for them.:p Granted, I didn't get it at the time, because I thought blackberries could access the internet too. Then a friend explained that blackberries have (had?) crappy browsers.
Remember that the iPhone didn't support ANY apps until the iPhone 3G came out. What did THEY do?

60% growth vs. 300% growth, Apple better be worried about this. Sure, they are in the drivers seat now, but Android has the momentum of a bulldozer going 100 MPH, whereas the iOS app market has that of a 1986 Yugo going 30 MPH.

The analogy that you've given makes no sense. This discussion is about app stores and profitability. Apple is dominating this market because although there are more Android devices out there, there is a greater perception of value in the App store and a corresponding shelling out of cash toward Apple.

Apple has always been about producing and shipping quality products that are profitable as opposed to the licensing model of Android which is focused on shipping massive numbers of devices which will point users towards Google and their ad based revenue model.

Android device users don't spend much money on
1. Their device
2. Apps

hey man, let's protect those ladies from viruses!

Way to cherry pick a quote and totally take it out of context...

Did you even read the article?

If Apple has a 60% marketshare by 2014, as this group suggest, then I think it will take less than the 7 to 8 years you think it will

It is quite clear you didn't. Nothing in the Article suggests Apple will ever surrender the market share lead, and it is quite clear they will never give up the revenue lead...

Great news!! Too bad it's not 100%. I want Apple to control the world. That would be so good!!!!!!!!!!!!

Android owns the market, but their users don't buy apps.

I wonder what would happen if unlike Android which is an open OS, you were forced to buy your apps from a single source…Oh wait.

LOL!

Great news!! Too bad it's not 100%. I want Apple to control the world. That would be so good!!!!!!!!!!!!

Uh-boy.

Yet another reason why I hide the fact I own Apple products and try not to use them in public.

I spent more money on my android device then an iPhone cause. I do not like an iPhone plane and simple I don't hate it I just don't care for it. But stop saying that all android devices are cheaper. They are not their are a lot of android devices more expensive then the iPhone and people still chose to buy them. Even the thunderbolt which competes directly competes with the iPhone and cost 50 dollars more. Still a quarter million people chose to pay 50$ more to buy it.

I don't buy apps that I don't need. Plain and simple. I do not waste my money on things I don't need or will not use. I paid for one app that I use everyday. I don't need any other apps. I do enjoy how android has free versions of apps and if I don't like it I don't have to pay for it. With the availability of a option of a free app people of course will not buy the paid app. with also more competition with apps companies have to work harder to get peoples money then on the iPhone where there is less app competition.

LOL those categories fanboys make up - "iPhone to dominate US Physician SmartPhone Market", "75% percent of App Download Market" - whatever the hell makes those things relevant!

What tomorrow - iPhone to dominate Left handed iPhone users market? :D

Its pretty unhealthy to have your head that far up a companies a**. You do realize that your relationship with apple is one sided... right?

As a developer, this is another reason why I spend 100% of my time on iOS...Until Android shows me that I can make alot of money developing for their platform, I will continue to develop for iOS. So while Android may hold the numbers crown, as a developer, I look to the percentage of users spending money using apps...and that percentage is MUCH higher in the iOS ecosystem...

This is also reflected in the fact that major companies are spending the majority of their mobile budgets on iOS...just look at hiring boards and you will find better pay and more jobs for iOS developers than Android...despite the fact that Android is seemingly beating Apple up and down the numbers charts...

Now as an apple fanboy, this makes me happy because i know other developers will continue to put their best efforts towards iOS...coupled with what I believe to be a better device (my opinion of course) and ecosystem (also my opinion),...then I think things look great for Apple...just my two cents...

Android platform execution has been poor. It has been poor compared to Windows Mobile 6.0.

What I effectively wish apart from good iOS - developer - user relationship, is WP7 coming in and having a healthy competition.
After all, Microsoft and Apple seem to know alot about mobile software and software in general

Heh... Yugo!! :D

Research firm IHS iSuppli...
I want their jobs. Judging by the looks of that graph this was probably some VP's entire quarterly project, demanding thousands of man-hours and a seven figure salary. :p

ummmm...didn't Apple have 100% of the App Download Market in 2007-2010? :) Seriously.

So it's decreasing to 75%.

Inevitably Apple is not going to have much more than 50% as soon as Android has more time under its belt (iPhone's been out for ~4 years right?...Android has been out for 1 year).

I like my iPhone but it's silly to think that Apple will own 75%+ of "downloadable apps" after 2011. But let me guess...Apple will suddenly lump Mac OS app downloads into it's count.

Google Maps. And widgets. Lots of widgets. And, um....yeah, that's about it.

Well, I for one do things like: Stream my music from my Mac via Audiogalaxy, stream my movies and TV Series' to my devices via Plex. Chat on Facebook or Google Talk. Email, twitter (that whole social thing, you know?). I check out Amazon's extensive mp3 library and grab the odd song I like then I stream some music via Last.fm to discover new music I may like based on my tastes. Then I'm able to watch things on bbc iPlayer or on websites using Flash video.

I also play games like Dungeon Defenders, Samurai II Vengance, Zenonia, Geurilla Bob, Raging Thunder II, Reckless Racing, Need for Speed Shift, Worms, Let's Golf 2 and so on. I even play the odd Android exclusive game like the tactical RPG, Spectral Souls by Hyperdevbox. Then there are my emulators. Stuff like Marvin, letting me relive my days in the 80's, playing ZX Spectrum classics (all legal too, thanks to worldofspecrum.org integration) downloading roms directly to my handsets/tablet.

All the while gawping at live wallpapers and widgets. I hope that this activity lives up to your expectations of the platform.

Well, they just buy less but higher quality apps, not so much all the iFart apps all the Apple fanboys buy. :p

Tony
A few thoughts about apps in general.

I would venture a guess that a good portion are just that, fart and other apps that cater to the younger demographic.

Then if we look at one major difference between iOS and Android, that being the fact that Android is a real hand held computer with an accessible file system. Therefore more can be done without requiring an app.

Next we take into consideration its much larger display which makes it possible to view full, not mobile, web pages quite nicely. For some reason iphone owners don't see this advantage.

Finally, while Apple has used apps sales volume as some sort of value benchmark, it's not as much of a factor when choosing between the two platforms as they make it out to be.

If it was, I don't believe Androids handset sales would be as large as it is.

I see iOS along with Android as both offering great value in the marketplace. Choices and competition is always advantageous.

Based on my personal experience with several iPhones & Android phones, I find them great companions. I like them equally. Each has its place in my multiplatform tech environment.

If Apple has a 60% marketshare by 2014, as this group suggest, then I think it will take less than the 7 to 8 years you think it will

So, if Apple's marketshare drops to 60% by 2014, that means that 40% of the market will be split by Android, PlayBook, WebOS, plus any other small players. So, even if Android had fully half of the remaining marketshare, then it would only hold 20% vs. Apple's 60%. And that's three years from now. So, based on that, yes, it would take on the order of 7 to 8 years...

So, first off, check your history. The first Android phone came out almost three years ago, and apps could be developed in Android from day 1, whereas it wasn't until about a year after the original iPhone was released that apps could be developed for it. So, the iOS AppStore has really only been around for a few months longer than the Android Marketplace.

Second, it is important to note that this percentage is based on revenue, not number if apps downloaded. As such, the real story here is not how many apps are being downloaded on each platform, but rather where people are willing to spend their money. For that reason, as already noted by a developer who posted above, this kind of information is key to developers for them to decide where to invest their development dollars. So long as the picture remains like this, the iOS development community will see more and better apps developed for it than any of the other platforms...

Did you see this?

App Store is expected to take in 76 percent of revenue this year and retain 60 percent market share by 2014

This is the wrong direction. Based on multiple surveys and sales reports, the trend is clear, iOS is loosing market share, in particular in the handset market. Yes, they are raking the cash in hand over fist. Yes, App sales per iOS device are greater than per Android device. Yes, the App Store is less of a 'wild west' relative to Android appstores. However, the fact remains that they are dropping in the install base, and this will eventually (I think) cause them to lose the revenue lead to Google.

This is great news. And everyone still says it is a case of evil Apple vs developers. What about Android?
