My Apple ID was stolen and money taken out from it by some loser in China. Better not have been this dude!

Yup, I'd rather pay no taxes in that notorious tax haven that is the UK. No taxes at all there.

Funny that.

Seems it would be a pretty nice marketing move to push sales in a massive country.

I'm sure it's just a coincidence though

Was thinking much the same thing. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they just handpicked a winner from China as good marketing. I doubt they even know who made the 25 billionth download.

It's probably some guy who hired 1,000 laborers at 10¢ per hour to download apps all day long for a few days. I'm only half joking, it would not really be shocking.

$10,000 iTunes gift card!!!

What a rip off...who in their right mind would want to spend 10k in the iTunes store.

Just write them a cheque and be done with it...tight arses!

That's basically free apps, music, and books for life, what's wrong with that? Granted, it costs Apple a lot less that $10,000 in cash, but hey, it's free, they didn't need to give away anything at all.

Great Timing...

1. A Disney app? - nice tip of the hat to Steve
2. China - iPad? Who owns the name?
3. 2 Days before Mar 7? - what timing to release the name of the winner
4. Mar 7? - just enough time to have the winner fly to the event for the big reveal or at least set up the video feed ("just one more thing").

Just sayin' - and I'm still going to be getting an iPad 3 if they've doubled the resolution and still have a 64Gb model at same price. :)

Can you really plan this kind of PR job, or did the stars suddenly align. Wow.

or maybe Ms/Mrs/Miss Fu?

Chinese family names (last name) are placed first, before the given name.

I guess it depends on whether or not Apple swapped the places of his name to match the Western way (first/last) or kept it in the Chinese way (last/first).

It does look like the winner is a woman- I was reading off several websites and they all stated 'he'. You know what they say about assuming

A lot of apps...

Just two cents to add from China...

First cent. On the tax issue. Offshore remitted income or winnings are in principle not taxed for residents in China. It isn't in the large majority of countries. The US is an anomaly in taxing its citizens on worldwide income. So if a Chinese national resident in China wins a US-issued prize, he/she pays no tax . If a US national resident in China wins a US-issued prize, he/she pays US tax. If a Chinese national resident in the US wins a US-issued prize, he/she pays US tax. The overall theme is that is nice to be the US taxman.

Second cent. USD 10k is a lot of apps to purchase. There is no other paid media content available for purchase in the China iTunes store. It I were Ms Fu, I would hope that Apple will allow her to spend the gift card in the US iTunes store. Big maybe. Doubt it, since it would constitute a violation of the very copyright/licensing/distribution agreements that prevent content from being available in the Chinese store in the first place.

Third cent (encore). USD 10k is roughly CNY 63k. That is pretty much the average income per capita in Ms Fu's province of Qingdao. So while I wouldn't go as far that USD 10k = USD 100k in China... yes, it is a big win. I suppose that this will strengthen Ms Fu in the Chinese belief that water brings prosperity...

there's no sales tax/gift tax in china. so even if the chinese mainstream media picks this news up, it's highly unlikely that the person in question would need to pay the associated tax.

far as i know, there isn't a time of the year where everyone in china turns their tax in. grats to the guy who won! hopefully it generates more PR for apple and more purchases.. which in turn.. make apple more money so they can crank out better products for us in the future! :)
