Why isn't there an app on the iPad for creating (physical) photo books?

It would use the photo library, which has low res versions of your photos. Do you really want a photo book using those optimized images?

Apple only charges 30% on in-app downloads, not purchases of physical merchandise. See also: Amazon Mobile app, from which you can buy anything physical sold on amazon, despite the fact that you can no longer download books on the kindle app.

Not a valid excuse.

And the resolution is enough for 4x6 prints. You wouldn't want to blow them up to a full page, but they'd work for most layouts.
