I have an iPhone 5C 32GB that was in a LifeProof case and still got water damaged! I am going to make an appointment with Apple this week to see if they will replace it. I have Assurion insurance and its $169 for another phone from them. I figure I will give Apple a try and see what I get.

How much is it monthly for Assurion insurance? You have to pay $169 for a replacement plus a monthly cost and you still have to WAIT for them to send you a replacement? That's exactly why I just keep $300 in the bank for a rainy day... If I ever need to replace my phone I just go to the Apple store and if they don't offer me a free replacement I buy an out of warranty replacement. That monthly charge for Assurion is out of control. And if I don't need to use it during that time I will use that money to buy my new phone and save $40 a month until I have $300 again. I'd rather pay myself than to keep paying Assurion.

Asurion also covers loss/theft though. Some people are prone to losing or having their phones stolen, so they keep themselves covered. I agree however that Applecare+ or no insurance is the better/cheaper way to go.

So the replacement cost at Apple is $269 for an iPhone 5C just as it is for a 5S, doesnt seem like a fair price given the two phones have different retail prices. I ended up using Assurion which charged me a $169 deductible. I agree with other posters about the deductible coupled with the monthly fee of $10. For me it comes down to loss/stolen. If I lose my phone, I would have to purchase the phone at full retail if not eligible for an upgrade. So for now I will continue with Assurion and their high cost of service.

**Update** I received a new iPhone 5c 32gb today via Assurion. It was sealed in original box with all the included accessories!! I needed a new pair of earbuds! I guess maybe with that phone they only had new products because of the 32gb variation. So I guess its all about what they have at that specific time.

I've always loved this policy. Seems like a reasonable cost if I screw up.

However, what keeps someone from stealing/find an iPhone. Putting the phone underwater then trying to turn it on several times to insure it toast. Then taking it into an Apple store and saying it was theres and it fell in a toilet or something and getting a new iPhone? Then that person just logging into their Apple ID?

I think they use the IMEI to determine ownership of the phone, its printed on the back of phone.
